They've got Newcastle away on Wednesday, so we could be 6 ahead soon if things go our way. Then in a few weeks they've got Chelsea away and Arsenal home close together and then they come to Anfield soon after. Plus the goal difference is worth another point.

Tbh I think we're going to have to fuck up pretty royally not to CL from here.

It's not the time for these comments. Not yet lads. It looks that way, but anything could happen.

They have Chelsea (A), Arsenal (h), and us in March (A). We have United in March

they have Norwich, Cardiff, Newcastle in Feb.

We have Chelsea, City, Man U to come.. after March, they have a super easy (on paper) run in. If anything their run in is easier.

They also have Europa League games in March if they get past Dnipro this round. We have to make sure we pad our points in February and March, so that by the end of their washout in March, their spirits are so down even a sweet schedule doesn't mean much anymore.

Ah Jesus, stop counting those roosters.

Why? Given everything we've seen this season, we're easily in the top four teams. Spurs, Everton and United are no where near as good as consistent. It would take a total disaster for us to miss out. I think Arsenal are as likely to miss out on fourth, and that's pretty unlikely too.

We need about 68 to 72 points, so we're on course for that, fingers crossed. At this stage, on last season's ratings, we're healthy:

Yep. Don't get me wrong, I'll be much more relaxed once we put a bit more distance between us and Spurs (I think Utd are out of it now, and Everton pretty close to it) but any neutral observer would surely look at the way the two teams are playing and say we're massive favourites to finish above them now.

I think Newcastle might well beat them on Wednesday for a start.

In my opinion that really has to be the target, that qualifier will really fuck our pre-season up.

Ha, well first should really be our target. And I'd rather fourth than fifth, any place higher is obviously better, but I'd take fourth now.

One game at a time. let's get another round of games in then we'll see. If we beat Fulham and Spurs slip up at Newcastle then we'd be looking great.

That's it, whilst the gap is inexplicably still only three points, we have to be wary. If we can make the gap between us in fourth/third and fifth 6 points, then I'll be able to breathe a lot of a lot easier. That will effectively allow us a free pass in our two hardest remaining games, Chelsea and City, and still make the top four assuming we match the other games over there remaining games. Until then, it's only a bad result away from being tied again, which is painful to say considering how much better we've been so far this season compared to Spurs and Everton.

I can actually take Everton. Everton have played some pretty good football at times and gone to the likes of Old Trafford and the Emirates and taken the game to them. Spurs have generally limped along, playing shite (and in the beginning, benefitting from odd goal victories they scarcely deserved). What fucking team challenges for the Champs League in a very competitive season with a goal difference of zero with almost 2/3 of the season gone? How? What strange alchemy is this?

Yeh, those penalties at the beginning of the season were an absolute sucker, they deserved nothing from those games, but oh well. You're right about Everton, I was being harsh lumping them with Spurs, they've been good and 5 points feels about right, annoyingly Spurs have that winning habit, we need a big team to thrash them again soon.

What no love? Do people still think he's a chancer or a bit of a gob shite? He's picked off three of the best teams in the league this season and put 14 goals past them, while we looked brilliant at times against City too.

Kudos, he's been a revelation in many respects, give the turn around he's managed in 18 months. None of this five year plan bollocks, just terrific football and some brilliant buys (yes I know he's bought dross aswell).

You can't argue with his and our performance so far this season, in all truth squad wise you would say probably the 6th best team yet we've been really exceptional at times and genuinely exciting to watch.

IMO the best watch in the league.

Rodgers has monumentally fucked up a couple of times with how he's set them up this season but to his credit hasn't lost his bottle and will learn just like he has realised the unwritten rules of not talking up our chances and instead letting the footy do the talking.

Perversely what makes it even more odd is that IMO this seasons signings haven't added much at all, mignolet, cissokho, aspas, that Chelsea fella all haven't really strengthened us and with hindsight we should have spent it elsewhere... but some you win some you lose and so many of our targets have been snaffled by our opponents that its hard to say whether that's all Brendans fault anyway.

For the record I like Sakho and Toure and both are no doubt useful, the two young lads might well be good be we don't know yet. IMO we did fail in our stated aim of buying in a class fort teamer and yet it hasn't hurt us at all. Team dynamics are such an unknown to the outside viewer that despite what happens on the pitch who is to say that the players we don't really rate are not in fact contributing in terms of spirit etc... we certainly look together, look like a team and that's possibly the best thing about this season for me. They look like they believe and that they give a shit. For me the tension between Suarez and Sturridge epitomises how Rodgers has got the squad thinking, definite agro, even simple mardyness but the greed for goals and victory is plain to see and it's through the whole fucking team. Constructive collective desire and aggression has lead to us shitting goals... Henderson is twice the player I thought he would be, Coutinho is adding defensive discipline to his sublime passing... Talking about Coutinho, just imagine how good he will be if he can learn to add finishing to his game...

Genuinely exciting style, fearsome swagger excellent development of our younger players... Flanno, Sterling, Henderson, it has been great to watch. Questionable signings aside the positives massively outweigh the negatives...

It should also be mentioned that we certainly haven't been "lucky" injury wise...

I wasn't overly enamoured with the dulcet philosopher demeanour when he arrived but you can't help feeling that Rodgers is doing something very very right, even when we put in abject performances we don't let it fester instead we go out and dish out a beating.

I really hope we get into that top 4 at the end of the day because excitement wise we are second to none this season. I genuinely think we deserve it so far. Fair play to the manager and the players... I'm really really enjoying it... I think we all are...and that's what its about fundamentally, enjoying it.

We should have got 7 against Arsenal on Saturday... that's fucking insane....that's how good we've been at times this season...no team has looked better.

PS
I didn't even mention the fact that we are blessed with by far the leagues best most exciting awesome player.... happy days...

Anyway... I don't like being all positive it makes me feel all jinxy...

Lets go one at a time and keep hoping for the best, start with 3 points against Fulham, 1 nil will do nicely.

I love this quote:

"I can never forget the game that we played here just after the transfer window," Rodgers said on Saturday, referring to Arsenal's 2-0 win at Anfield in September 2012." We were murdered really. I sat in a few games in that opening five or six months and thought that when I get that profile of player I wanted and more time to work, this won't happen to us again, especially here at home. For us to perform like that today a little while down the line shows the progression. We now go into games expecting to win."

Rodgers has done an excellent job so far, having had to learn-on-the-job to an extent in his first big club management role.

His clear implementation of an attacking philosophy/system, willingness to modify his plans to take into account playing staff, and development of young players has been outstanding.

He's even cut out a lot of his David Brent-isms in the past year (that documentary probably did him a favour all told).

His handling of the Suarez saga and vision in getting the best out of a Suarez/Sturridge partnership is top class.

And finally, kudos to FSG in taking the brave decision to relieve Kenny of management AND to appoint Rodgers.

Exciting times.

FYI: that well-known typographical error Ryland Morgans, our head of fitness, is talking at the moment on Sky Sports 1 about how he prepares the players for matches.
