Rodgers plans

Question is, how far is Henderson from being a starting player for a team competing for CL places?
Seriously, I don't think anyone here think he's good enough, I mean all this talk about resigning Alonso doesn't exactly back this supposed faith we have for him.

I doubt many even think about Hendo when the topic of Alonso coming back comes up. They just want him back.

Damien Comolli has said that none of the figures quoted in the press over the transfer have been accurate, and that Liverpool paid a fee they are ‘comfortable with’.

There has been talk of the deal costing up to £20million, or £13million with David Ngog going to Sunderland, however Comolli said none of the figures are true: “On the fee, I’ve read and heard a lot of things. There was a lot of speculation on how much we would pay for Jordan and none of the figures I’ve seen are correct so far. We’ve paid a price that we are comfortable with, otherwise we would not have done the deal.”

Just look at Coutinho, he's not even fit but since we signed him he's contributed in almost every game he's played in.
Some said that he hasn't been tested against a top side, forgetting that he's spent a couple of seasons in Inter and Espanyol.
We just played Spurs and he was one the most impressive players on the pitch.
How long shall we wait? Sometimes I think that it's as simple as "either you have it, or you don't".
Coutinho definitely has it.
Hendo? He's somewhere in the middle.
Time should be reserved for players who are new to the league or reserve players who just made the grade.

Personally I quite like Henderson, and he's come on, as well as becoming more muscular, which will help him. I think he'll be fine. But there's no way you'd ever say it was a bargain signing.

I'd give exactly the same answer to that as I did to the Count. Why accept the cited fees for all transfers except these ones? After all, isn't the importance of a fee its relative size, not its absolute size? And given that it's the relative size that's important, I think you need to be consistent in where you take the fees from.

I'd offer 10 million for Ter Stegen and loan him back ... We can do with him what Chelsea have said with Courtois.

We should sign 2 in the upper bracket of young (22-25) CBs ... Two that can work together for the next 5-8 years.

Another attacking talent is a good idea - I'd offer Ajax 8 million for Fischer and loan him back to them. Let him develop for 1-2 years more and release him on England.
I agree but i towuld think it would take more money than that to get him. The problem is that money is probably needed in CM/DM and CB

I never take the reported fees that seriously, and I know I don't know the full details, so that's why I prefer to avoid getting dragged into these discussions.

For the record I am not suggesting that we didn't over pay for Henderson and Downing regardless of what their actual fees were.

(By the way, I uploaded an mp3 file of Shanks explaining his pass and move philosophy, which might interest some in relation to Rodgers. I put a link to it in the Shanks thread in the video section above.)

No, that's surely incontrovertible.

Well, no one would have said £18million was a bargain for Carrick in 2006, in fact most of us were laughing our heads off. However after being at the centre of United's side for the last seven years, and has still probably got more years in him, he was a fantastic piece of business, I can see Henderson being the same sort of deal.

What is your source for transfer fees Peter?

Well I wouldn't agree with that. I think it was a mediocre signing in terms of value for money.

I've been meaning to ask if anyone has seen him play much? What kind of worries me is his age, there aren't that many CB's(especially foreign ones) who come to England and are ready to play at top level at 21 years old.

He's captain at the age of 21.

How many players you know are/were already captains of their teams at 21 yo ? And I mean leading/top European teams.

Two players come to mind. One currently plays for us, and another an ex.

Sure, but that's not really a bargain, is it? It looks like a fair price what they've got for it.

Yeah I know he's captain and he already has international caps etc. I like his CV very much but would just like someone who has actually seen him play to give an assesment on how ready/suitable he is to be a starter in England and what kind of a player he is overall(would he be good paired with Agger etc.). Being a CB in England is quite different from being a CB in Eredivisie too.

I wasn't saying he was a bargain just that he was a good piece of business, which considering hes been a mainstay in the midfield of the team that's won maybe premier leagues, cups and the champions league, is true. I think Henderson will be the same.

We didn't trade Torres for Carroll, we went and bought him for £35 million that's the worst transfer in premiership history. Saying that we traded Torres for Carroll and Suarez is just wordplay.

Regarding the rest, Enrique was bought for a relative low sum, we paid about the same for Coates. But the reported fees that both Downing and Hendo came for was and still is terrible business. I'm still not "OK" with those deals.
Oh are you not 'Ok' with them Modo. Right. Good for you.

Probably due to my ineradicable pedantry we've almost certainly been agreeing all the time without realising it. So: yes!

Re the fees for Henderson and Downing its pretty clear we paid to much.
The main stream press reported the fees including add ons.
I think it was Barrett who said Henderson was 13+3 mill in add ons.
And Downing was 16 + 2,5 mill.

I've read it several times on Twitter aswell when journos have tweeted it.

Doesnt matter though, as we paid 5 mill to much regardless.

How do people feel about a swap deal with Newcastle, Carroll for Ben Arfa?

I really hope we don't. I rated Ben Arfa, he's a clever player, but his injury record is horrendous and he's not radically different to what we already have, we need a bit more fight and determination across the park, he's just another featherlight player to add to the collection.

Yeah, I agree. I rate Ben Arfa but he's injury prone and a bit of a troublemaker.
I'd rather get cash for Carroll.
He'll be sold or moved on for a low fee though as I'm guessing not many clubs will be after him.

More or less certain outgoings:

Coates: £5m
Skrtel: £10m
Carroll: £9m (I don't think we'll get much more than that)
Spearing £2m
Assaidi £4m
Pacheco £2m
TOTAL £32m

Maybe's:

Borini £6m
Ngoo £2m
Downing £8m
Shelvey (Loan)
Suso (Loan)
TOTAL £16m

I reckon we bank on having about £20m to spend on top of what we will have in the kitty, there may be more, but anyway:

Priorities in order for me would have to be, in terms of cost AND necessity:
CB1
DM
CB2
Attacker
LB cover
