Rodgers plans

I was watching all the goals we've scored this season last night, and Downing has been heavily involved in lots of our best performances since Christmas.

I'm sceptical about how much difference our desire to sell Carroll will affect his price. Surely in most cases of a player being transfer listed buying clubs are also aware of the selling club's intentions, the only difference in this case that everyone else knows it too. The real test will be whether there's actually any underlying demand, and also whether he agrees to leave. Newcastle, West Ham, and Stoke I could see paying at least £10m for him, maybe some others as well. Guess we'll see.

I think a CB is top of his shopping list. It will be interesting if his next consideration is less identifying positions that need bolstering, but potential worldies to improve the team's quality.

I'm not quite sold on Williams tbh. I hope he has someone else in mind. We need a top top quality CB.

Williams, Ben Arfa, Ince and Gameiro

They'll all fit nicely in to our 3-0-7 tactics.

Where the fuck are are all these attacking players going to play?

We need at least 2 CB's and I wouldn't be opposed to a LB & a DM.

A right-sided attacker would be nice and some thought on Gerard's replacement would be good sooner rather than later

It's not an impressive list. I'd rather we go for young "rejects" (or hidden gems) like Coutinho. Or buy someone like Fisher from Ajax and Eriksen as well.
I also prefer Höwedes to Williams. I hope Suarez tells Rodgers that it's either him or Williams.
Ince is alright though.

We have to continue buy the most ready young talent available - we've done that well so far, with only Borini struggling (though injuries have really killed it for him). That young Feyernoord CB is a good target.

Ive actually got faith in Mr Rodgers buying the right players.

Im very happy with his spending so far. Allen, Borini, Sturridge and Coutinho. Super stuff.
Im very very excited about next year.

Just think if he could have been the one spending the 100 million instead of Comoli/Kenny

*ducks*

He's going to scare them off if he gets any MORE touchy feely. As Dave Lee Travis would say, "Wank Wank Oops!"

In time Kennys business is starting to look ok.
Downing, Henderson, Enrique, Coates.......
As for Comolli, Look, he traded Torres for Suarez and Carroll. I think thats fucking boss retrospectively.
Carroll isnt going to contribute obviously but lets say knowing what we now know someone said I'll give you Suarez and 10m for Torres, wed rip their fucking arm off.
Rafa, Roy, Kenny, Comolli and Mr Rodgers have all built something wether by luck or design that I for one really REALLY like the look of.
Christ we were only two years ago looking at a team with Jovanovic, Konchesky, Poulsen, Degen etc filling the ranks.
Now weve got Suarez, Sturridge, Coutinho, Shelvey, Allen, Suso, Sterling, Downing, Enrique, Johnson, Henderson, Borini.
Fuck me. Its actually a miraculous turn around really.
Results need to follow obviously, but what an overhaul those 5 guys have actually gone through.

Nothing will ever stop me being pissed off about spending £35m on Carroll. It's probably the single worst and most avoidable transfer mistake by any team in the whole PL era. Rafa got a good fee for Alonso but that doesn't mean he shouldn't get slated for spending £17m on Aquilani.

We didn't trade Torres for Carroll, we went and bought him for £35 million that's the worst transfer in premiership history. Saying that we traded Torres for Carroll and Suarez is just wordplay.

Regarding the rest, Enrique was bought for a relative low sum, we paid about the same for Coates. But the reported fees that both Downing and Hendo came for was and still is terrible business. I'm still not "OK" with those deals.

Cheap(ish) options.

£5m Jonathon Williams (Palace)....He could be the new Sneijder
£10m Wanyama....could be the new Essien

Henderson will prove value for money over time no doubt, if we sold Downing for £10m in the summer it wouldn't have ended up being the worst deal ever either.

I thought the Suarez deal was a separate and we didn't trade Torres for Carroll we went and bought him for £35 million that's the worst transfer in premiership history. Saying that we traded Torres for Carroll and Suarez is just wordplay.

Club ITK ers said that Jordan was bought for £13m, a fee which if he continues to improve will look like a bargain and at the moment seems more expensive than outrageous.
Again the actual fee for Downing was meant to be £16 plus add on's, possibly ones like title winning or champions league qualifying that will never be triggered. Still way over priced but then nobody can place a ball into a bin from fifty yards like Stu can.
The fee for Carroll makes me want to cry, the one for Suarez and I am laughing at Ajax's generosity

i know he is a GK but he is a monster GK. Pity funds are limited and needed elsewhere but he would be quite a catch.

I'd offer 10 million for Ter Stegen and loan him back ... We can do with him what Chelsea have said with Courtois.

We should sign 2 in the upper bracket of young (22-25) CBs ... Two that can work together for the next 5-8 years.

Another attacking talent is a good idea - I'd offer Ajax 8 million for Fischer and loan him back to them. Let him develop for 1-2 years more and release him on England.

The thing is, people will look back now and think that £50m for Torres was amazing business and pretty much offsets the money wasted on Carroll, but it just wasn't like that at the time. It was only the last 6 months he'd struggled for form - no-one seriously expected it to be the beginning of the end for him - and before that he'd been one of the best players in the world. £50m definitely felt like a good deal: it was what I was hoping for rather than expecting, but he was certainly worth £40m at the time. So you could say we got a £10m bonus on that sale, but then we blew at least £25m on the Carroll transfer, so it doesn't balance at all.

Downing was at least another £10m down the pan, and while Henderson was a more reasonable target (young, lots of potential etc) he was still at least £5m over the odds.

It still looks like a pretty disastrous 6 months of spending to me.

Hendo will have to come on in leaps and bounds in order to prove value for money. Don't get me wrong he's taken a step in the right direction this season but considering that we bought Alonso for less, there's still some way to go.
It's unfair to him, but Hendo wasn't worth more than like £6-7 million when we bought him.

Nah, the worst transfer is Carroll.

Exactly.

You'll have to excuse me if I'm cynical about these reported fees, they look a bit like special pleading for Kenny's sake to me. Most transfers probably aren't exactly as reported in the press, but usually we have to take those figures. I wonder if some of Rafa's or Rodgers's or Houllier's transfers weren't also for lower amounts than is commonly accepted, but that information doesn't seem to be available.

So I'd prefer to be consistent and use the same sources for all transfers so as to be able to comapre more fairly. Therefore Henderson was £16m, Downing £18m, and so on.

Bloody Daily Mail readers😉

Those were the fees that were put out when they actually signed and not as some sort of posthumous defense of the management's transfer policies.

Question is, how far is Henderson from being a starting player for a team competing for CL places?
Seriously, I don't think anyone here think he's good enough, I mean all this talk about resigning Alonso doesn't exactly back this supposed faith we have for him.
Just look at Coutinho, he's not even fit but since we signed him he's contributed in almost every game he's played in.
Some said that he hasn't been tested against a top side, forgetting that he's spent a couple of seasons in Inter and Espanyol.
We just played Spurs and he was one the most impressive players on the pitch.
How long shall we wait? Sometimes I think that it's as simple as "either you have it, or you don't".
Coutinho definitely has it.
Hendo? He's somewhere in the middle.
Time should be reserved for players who are new to the league or reserve players who just made the grade.

That's not true. I've never seen £13m for Henderson or £16m for Downing cited anywhere except on LFC forums.

The usual sources always quaote Henderson at £16m rising to £20m or just plain £20m, and Downing at £18m, £19m, or £20m.

Unless you can show me otherwise, of course. 🙂
