Whenever I think of Rafa's reign as manager, one interview stands out. It was that interview by Carra, "Who's bigger than Liverpool?" It started with Shanks and carried on throughout the 70s, 80s and even the 90s and 00s despite a relative lack of success compared to the previous decades. Carra's attitude was something that I thought was starting to fade out with Rafa's last year, Hodgson and even during Kenny's reign. We were becoming like any other team - and it just seemed like we were missing that swagger that was half the battle.

Suarez started changing that - when you have a player of that calibre who's so driven to succeed, it pulls players with you.

I think when reading Rodgers' interview today - it was a dig at Moyes and Manure. He's coming into his own. Last year, his confidence etc at times just didn't fit. But as many have note - including some of his biggest critics - he seems to be maturing as a manger, and has become a leader of a young squad.

I looked at Coutinho's interview - where he said he had no clue about Moyes and that he's rarely bothered talking to the Brazilians up as Manchester - as a new Liverpool swagger. "And they are? We're Liverpool, who cares?"

With a young & hungry team, led by a young manager, it's fun to watch them grow together. While the results won't always be as good as the've been to start the season, Rome is being built ... and we're well into the project.

Shanks would be proud

It was hardly missing when Kenny was in charge.

I wasn't slagging Kenny - but his attitude and leadership wasn't really translating into something positive with the players he had signed. They just weren't picking up what he was transferring ...

His comments in the press could easily have backfired on him so it was a bit of a gamble, its a sign of the confidence in the squad right now that neither Rodgers or Coutinho felt any hesitation to attack Utd. Thats part of a larger problem Utd will have this season, there is a power vacuum left by Fergusons retirement and Moyes doesnt exude authority there, Mourinho has been sniping at him from day one. I think you will see alot more sides fancy themselves this season against Utd

Rodgers is definitely growing into his role as LFC manager. As Gkmacca astutely pointed out in some other thread, there was a definite change in his attitude midway through the last season - interviews became better, playing style became stylish but pragmatic. He has handled this summers events brilliantly.

He exudes positivism in the press, the media like him, which is a huge plus point for a LFC manager. I also think he is a brilliant man manager. Look at Sturridge's celebration today. Wonderful to see that.

There is a danger in reading too much into whats been said both before and after the game, I certainly never read Coutinhos comments as any kind of "we are Liverpool-who are you?" dig. If you were going to bet your house on who will finish higher in the league out of United and us it would take a very very brave man to bet on us.

There are definitely a few lessons that the manager and the players can still take from Shankly though, the obstinate one eyed arrogance and belief is certainly useful in building up the team spirit. At its heart football is the same gladiatorial sport it always was and belief is important.

It is true that the spirit of Anfield has been watered down and dimmed since we were the dominant force and maybe in today's badly warped financial mess of a game it is no longer realistic to hope to dominate again but by the same token there is no reason why any Liverpool player shouldn't be very very proud to wear that shirt and make sure that they do absolutely everything to defend it.

Winning breeds confidence and the lads need to do a lot more winning than talking. I much prefer our football doing the talking on the field and it has been of late with absolutely no talk of Suarez. Yesterday's win was significant. A small victory in the greater war.

The players must bleed RED and defend the team. The young team that we're building is coming into their own, they have lofty ambitions that finally meet our own expectations. These are exciting times so lets enjoy the ride.

The media is always sniping at us and we should rightly defend ourselves within reason. No better way of doing that than by winning games.
