Brendan Rodgers has handed Liverpool a timely boost by agreeing a new long-term contract.

The Liverpool manager has 12 months, plus the option of another year, remaining on his deal but owners Fenway Sports Group have rewarded him for taking the club back into the Champions League with terms that are set to run to 2018.

Rodgers has yet to put pen to paper but that is a formality.

The 41-year-old could do so before Liverpool’s final game of the season on Sunday, at home to Newcastle, but it is more likely to be shortly after the end of the season.

FSG have never made any secret of their ambition to keep Rodgers for the long term and, equally, he is relishing the challenge at Anfield.

The only hold-up on the deal was Rodgers wanting to concentrate on the Barclays Premier League campaign rather than have any distractions.

‘There is no doubt that, at some point, we will agree another deal,’ Rodgers said before Liverpool played Chelsea last month. ‘I am sure of that.’

Come on, he hasn't won anything yet, not even a Carling cup. Let him see out his contract till next year, before we start with the preemptive retirement bonuses,

Seriously ? Do we let players see out their contracts before renewing ? If a player, let's say Suarez, performs exceedingly well do we only say we'll give you a salary increase when your current contract ends ? We'd only do that if we wanted to get that player off our books - and even then we'd look for the early transfer.

When a person meets the targets / deadlines set by the terms of his employment, or exceeds them, then that person is, or should be, rewarded. Basic HR management in any profession.

After the inevitable England world cup flop, the FA will be looking to replace hogepodge, and will undoubtedly sniff around our man. So having him tied down slightly more is only a good thing

Good news.
He's too young for England (from his point of view) - still a lot to achieve at club level before taking that pensioner job.
Oh and BTW, is he not Northern Irish?

I loved hearing that the players gave him a standing ovation at the club Bash. Well deserved.

I think it's fair to say it's been achieved.

Bet he's glad he waited and didn't do a deal 6 months ago.

He and his team have improved things. You'd have to be mad not to keep them. They deserve new contracts, even that bloke called Colin.

Great news. Now go get players worthy of representing Liverpool Football Club that will take us to the next level.
