Rivals : United

I can't see them getting better as a result of Falcao to be honest. Both Romney and Van Persie are 20+ goals a season players in functional teams, so I'm not sure what Falcao adds other than more of the same.

If they'd taken the money for Di Maria and Falcao and spent it on a couple of top quality defenders and a top CM I'd be much more concerned,.

united have won fuckloads with a shite team plus a couple of boss attacking players. rooney and van-p have been wank for a while but tia maria and wanko will not be. they'll get fourth i reckon.

Of course I don't think it is a never ending supply but CL income is far less significant than in the past and far less significant for United than other clubs.

CL revenue was about £35m last season.

The PL income has increased to over £80m for the top half teams. Twice what the CL brings in.

This year we earn £30m more per season for the Chevrolet deal. Next year without CL the Nike deal gets us £27m per season more. That is an almost £60m more income than when we made £130m per season.

Why is CL income so much more valuable than all these other incomes?

Because it prevents one of your rivals maintaining their lead over you. They can't spend or attract players with anything like the same power.

It's not just a simple case of finding £30m from elsewhere: it's stopping one of those 4 potential mega clubs from keeping you locked out of the big league long term. There's only so long cash will compensate for being a European irrelevance, you know. You think you'd be able to sign someone like Di Maria 4 or 5 years down the line having had no CL football for 5 or 6 years? No hope of winning the big trophies?

Fucking forget it.

Well it's either/or because they are not going to play all three at the same time and it's more likely RvP (out injured for 2 months anyway) will be fighting to get his slot back .. or not.

I can see Chastened's point about champions league income not being important but I'd counter that and say the top players want to play and compete in the best leagues with the best competitions. If you don't/can't offer that then you have to pay players a fuck load more that you usually would to compensate for missing out. How many seasons without champions league will top players even sponsors put up with? We've been out of it for 5 years thanks to terrible owners, poor signings and crap managers and have finally got back in but no doubt that period away meant we weren't able to attract the calibre of players that we should be aiming for. United can keep chucking money at the problem but there will come a time when someone has to reign in the spending

Well, it's not bad news for us if they think Rooney or Van Persie are finished.

Spending without thought. United can buy all the world class forwards but I don't see them doing well consistently until they replace Howard Webb.

WTF, I play for United now? And who is Van Persie?

Erm I think you will find the champs league will be important. Like the prem league next season the champs league gets a new deal in place which is massive in terms of new income for the clubs. Also these mega deals you have signed will have all kinds of performance bonuses. If utd don't perform they don't get the top end of these agreed deals. So I would imagine this seasons panic buying is a realisation if they don't get champs league this season they could be locked out for many years to come. Bt paid double the price sky payed so it should essentially mean British clubs will receive double what they get now.

Fair point think it increases to £60m from next season, which we will miss out on.

All the numbers I quoted were for commercial deals excluding CL.

We absolutely need CL in the medium term but I think we could still spend £100m per season without it.

I think it's easy to forget that Wages are also a big party of FFP. Spending say 20-30M more on wages this year with Falcao, Di Maria, Mata, etc takes a big bite out of that 100M figure.

You're starting to do my tits in with all this shit.

Disappointed that Welbeck has been allowed to leave but Falcao is definitely an upgrade.

Mata is going to be the one to miss out as they can't all play unless RvP is going to be out for a few months.

With all the new arrivals I think we will switch to 433

------------ De Gea

Rafael--Rojo---Jones---Shaw

-------------Blind

...Herrera------------Di Maria

------------Rooney

--------Falcao------RvP

Back 4 could be better but the front 4 if you include Di Maria is as strong as anyone in the league.

By the time they all settle we will be well off the pace for the top 4, but a much better foundation too build upon than we started the season

Hahahaha it's fucking hilarious how badly Utd have managed the football side of things the last 6 or 7 years. The numbers the manc posts make you realise what a magnificent position they'd got themselves into, and together with FFP they should be the Bayern Munich of English football right now: threatening absolute unbreakable dominance for the foreseeable future.

But just years upon years of bad and/or short-termist signings have left them really in big trouble. I'm trying to think of the last genuinely good signing they made, I reckon it's the Vidic and Evra deals of January 2006.

LOL

If people keep posting the same stuff about us being screwed financially without CL my answer will be pretty much the same

You never actually address the point that I and a couple of others have made several times, though.

It's not the money lost that counts, but the opportunity to weaken a rival for that long term place in the CL. Because 4 or 5 years without that and top players simply won't come regardless of what Utd offer. Not to mention that by that point Utd's financial advantage would be small to non-existent anyway.

Always remember you're only here cos we're allowing you. That shit can be as temporary as we like too.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt the other week, but if you keep boring my fucking scrotum off with your fucking kit deal money I might have to end you.
