Inspired by our usual unimaginative targeting of Premier League players, most notably from Southampton and relegated clubs, I was wondering if there are any players that we could/should be targeting.
Van Dyke seems to be our regulatory Southampton target.
From the relegation threatened clubs there probably isn't that much of interest.
Gylfi Sigurdsson would be a very good squad addition though I don't think he would improve our best eleven and I know nothing about Gibson at Middlesborough.
I don't think Traore will make the step up and looks like another Babel to me.
Mahrez if bothered could make the starting eleven on a regular basis though he does prefer the right side which is Mane's spot.
Demarie Grey is an interesting one and I reckon would be an addition to our squad though in truth I haven't seen that much of him.
I think @Modo rates Lascalles at Newcastle.
I cannot see us buying from any of the other top seven bar maybe Oxlaide Chamberlaine though Ihenacho may be made available this summer. Not sure if he would suit us.
So any one else?

I like Gray - he has the pace and the technical skills but he hasn't figured out how to make the most of them. His weakness from the couple of times i have seen him is he is very one footed and therefore predictably cuts inside all the time. I've only seen him play on the left though.

I'd like to see him played wide right and asked to stay wide and use his pace to stretch a defence. He could be a poor mans Mane - which would be handy to have.

Southampton are a Top 8 side so taking their players shouldn't be seen as a poor choice - not that I think we'll get VVD anyway. He'll be on his way to City if I had to bet. It's highly unlikely any decent players from the other Top 6 sides will join us.

We may have our Gylfi Sigurdsson in Grujic, similar players, so I don't think Klopp will go for him, though I wouldn't complain at all. I really don't want Ox-Ch'.

We'll be buying youngsters from the Championship or more established players from Germany, NL, Spain or France. I really don't see any other players at lower PL clubs that are likely to substantially strengthen our first team with limited risk, and that's what we should be looking to do for all weak links, replace them in the first team and push them down into the squad.

EDIT : except for Butland who I assume we will have no interest in as Klopp says he's happy with what he's got. And I forgot about Mahrez who I'd take all day long ! Maybe Drinkwater too.

Just looking towards the bottom end of the league:

Sunderland - No one.
Boro - Gibson would be an improvement on Lovren, Friend is a decent back up LB although at 29 not much left
Swansea - Mawson looks raw but would add depth, Sigurdsson again would add depth to the midfield and has a good freekick.
Hull - Similar to Boro - Maguire for CB and Robertson for LB would only be decent additions rather than good.
Palace - Only van Aanholt would add depth but I know some people on here don't rate him.

Looking higher up:
Burnley - Keane as a starter & Defour as back up? I rate Heaton too.
Leicester - Mahrez, I think Gray is a bit raw for us, he's not a starter for Leicester consistently, Schmecheal would also be an upgrade .
Bournemouth - Wilson seems to be a bit of a sicknote, but King has impressed
Stoke - Butland obviously, I rate Shawcross at 29 for a cheeky punt of £10-15m would be good business.

Southampton the following players would either add depth of improve us: Forster, Van Dijk, Bertrand & Tadic.

I'm not sure about that one, Sigurdsson. He'd cost 20-25 mill and I dont think thats value for money given what he'd offer us.

Gray at Leicester is an interesting one. There were some stories about a 12 mill release clause. If true that could be a good signing.
The problem is we have quite a lot of those wingers in the U-23s and out on loan.

Michael Keane could be an option and only has one year left on his contract.

Robertson? Dont rate him that much either.
Maguire? The same. Not better than what we've got.
Gibson seem to be a good defender but not good enough for a top 6 side.

Not much value in the Premier League these days.

I don't think he'd cost that kind of money. I think he goes under the radar a little bit and there aren't going to be many massive bids for him.

Jordan Pickford & Didier Ndong have been mentioned as the only 2 players at Sunderland worth looking at.

If we can prise iheanacho away I'd be elated. He could be a star if he gets consistent game time

With Jesus and probably Aguero ahead of him in the pecking order he might be ready for a move and Man City might be prepared to sell.
He doesn't seem to feature much under Guardiola

There has consistently been talk that Pep doesn't have the love for Aguero. I'd have him all day long but I suppose he'd be silly money. How much do people think? 50 million?

£60m I think seals the deal to a premier league rival - I think the love is returning though as Aguero's workrate has upped.

He signed a new contract in August and Swansea seem to sell pretty well. Bony, Allen, Ayew and Williams.

I think that any team that want him will have to pay a pretty decent fee.
Would improve our set pieces mind.

There's a load of talent in the Premiership and Championship (and Scotland) that would improve us, but it's harder to clarify which would be attainable, or worth the effort.

Last season it was obvious that Kante was the one player almost every fan wanted their club to buy, but I'm not sure there's a similar stand-out, obvious candidate from a "small" club this year, apart from maybe Dick.

Klopp has said he's looking at center backs who has played well while holding a high line. That eliminates at least 3/4 of the center backs in the premiership.

Sunderland - Jermaine Defoe would be a great addition and squad player. He'll get plenty of game time and score loads
Burnley - Heaton is a great keeper

Willian would be a great addition if Chelsea signed another wide player and determined that he was surplus to requirements. He's quality, works hard and is pretty decent tracking back.
