LIVERPOOL have dubbed former boss Rafa Benitez “a mischief maker†for suggesting the club sold Fernando Torres to Chelsea on the cheap.
The Merseysiders also insist there will be no Anfield return for Benitez (above), who was sacked in the summer. Kenny Dalglish is on the verge of being offered the job permanently.
Benitez indicated on BBC TV’s Football Focus yesterday that Liverpool could have banked £70million, not the £50m they received. He said: “I think last year we were talking about £70m.
“People were talking about an offer from another club. It is big money (£50m) but it could have been even better.â€
But a highly-placed Liverpool source told Sunday Express Sport that Benitez is talking rubbish because they received just one official offer for their Spanish striker last summer. A £28m bid was lodged by Chelsea in talks between Stamford Bridge chairman Bruce Buck and the then Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton.
The source added: “Either Rafa’s memory is playing tricks or he is simply mischief making, because there has never been any talk of a club prepared to offer £70m or anything like that figure.â€
It’s believed Benitez has said Manchester United were trying to hijack Chelsea’s transfer window deal for Torres – something which has again been quashed by the Anfield insider.
It is understood that the club is fed up with Benitez, who still has a home on the Wirral, that “it would be a dream†to manage Liverpool again.
Liverpool insist he will have a long wait with owner John W Henry and Tom Werner delighted with Dalglish’s work.
