Final PL game before the break. We go into this on a high after last night. Villa got a drubbing at Spurs and play tonight, so more fatigue in their legs.

I would make a couple of tweaks to last night - moving Jones in to partner Gravy (bringing Szobo in) and starting Nunez. Diaz has to start, although Gakpo was great on the left.

Kelleher

Trent
Konate
Virgil
Tsimikas

Gravy
Jones
Szobo

Salah
Nunez
Diaz

Its a nice problem to have that all of Nunez, Diaz & Gakpo are looking sharp. Part of me would bench Trent - but we won't so why entertain it.

A good time to play Villa (I hope). However we need to keep the rotation going wherever possible. Starting the same players twice a week (and then long distance travel and 2 international games in a week for most of our squad) is a recipe for injuries.

I'd want to see Tsimi, Bradley, Quansah or Gomez, Endo and Gakpo coming on as soon as feasible depending on the state of the game (60 mins).

Looking forward to having Elliott and Chiesa fit (haha).

As long as we don’t get up on the wrong end of a Duran double we’ll fine. I’d hate come undone and have crash back down to an ordinary world!

Poor me (and others in Asia)! Bloody 04.00 KO sigh.

It'll just be like a UCL tie! Fitting as the two clubs most historically and currently successful in Europe...

Wake up at 5.00am to check the score and lie to the wife that I'm stressed and making detailed financial plans. Give her a judgey face when she finally rolls out of bed at 6..

Kind of feel like we stick with the same team as last night, fatigue permitting. Diaz seemed comfortable in the middle, gakpo did well on the left, mo was mo and Jones is doing those intricate passes that i always want szob to do but never does the massive hungarian shithouse.

As long as we don't go into games cocky. When we do, players like Trent and Robbo have stinkers.
Also, no Trent for free kicks. I am pretty sure Mac, Salah and Dom all could do better on the free kicks

How do you explain the cries of delight / frustration then ?! 😛

The good thing with Diaz in the middle is it solves the Gapko conundrum, as he deserves to be playing ahead of Nunez and Jota on this seasons form. He looks much more intelligent with his movement and more of a handful for opposition defenders, than he arguably did last season. Nunez meanwhile can step in across the front three and do a job later on in games or starting here and there, which is sound for us.

Jones should keep his place, but it's not a huge deal if Szobo plays instead, the midfield does it's standard industrious job, regardless. Those four are great at what they do, even if they can occasionally be hit and miss. Gomez is probably banging on the door a bit for a start too, but who do you rest? Trent or Konate? It's not worth fucking with at the moment.

Slot did what I asked and played with an inverted triangle midfield for most of the game vs Leverkusen - Jones and Alexis were both at #8 and there was no #10 until Szobo came on. I think that was a successful experiment and needs to continue - even when Szobo plays. Maybe having Diaz at #9 also improved our press.

It'll be interesting to see if that set up helps Szobo too, I think it might.

Yeah, I was a little disappointed it switched back to 4-2-3-1 when Szobo came on, but TBH it made sense - there was every reason to keep the 2nd midfielder deeper next to Gravy while protecting a 2-goal lead and Szobo came with fresh legs and pressed effectively from #10.

But to do that from the start of that game when we’re fighting for control doesn’t make sense to me. There is a reason why Klopp almost invariably stuck with his 4-3-3 throughout his time in charge and now that we tried something different with Slot - even though results-wise it’s been hugely successful - it’s becoming even clearer that it’s the best system for this style of play.

I’m pretty sure Szobo will be better as an #8 rather than #10 too. Less distance to run back when the ball is lost and his forward runs will be more unexpected. Slot kind of misprofiled him.

Villa have rotated quite heavily tonight, with what looks like only 3-4 players who might start on Sat (unless they perform - then maybe they'll earn a spot).

Tielemens is one of these, which is good as I think we can overrun him in the middle, so the more minutes in his legs the better.

I'd bench Trent and Nunez for Conor and Diaz.

Trent needs to see he needs us more than we need him. Yeah he's a great player, I love him, but he needs to wind his neck in. And Gakpo is clearly better at everything than Nunez, who I think is a great impact player brought on later.

Looks like the opposite to me, only Digne, Torres and Onana omitted today

Kelleher
Trent Ibou Virgil Kostas
Grav Jones
Diaz
Salah Nunez Gakpo

All out attack 101MPH, suffocate the life out of them then give few of the lads an early holiday after 20mins when we're 4 up.

Leave Mac and Szobo out the squad and tell their national teams they can't travel.

Hopefully this is a confidence draining run of defeats for Villa that we can add to.

Would go into the international break on cloud 9 if we win.

Shows how hard it is to compete in two big competitions every 3/4 days.

Fitness and stamina of your best players becomes such an important factor.

Only 3-4 ? I thought about 7 were now regulars. And they lost to a weird penalty !
