Freeze it the moment Naingolan plays the long pass - Lovren is 7-8m deeper than VvD and Robertson and looks like he's pulled TAA with him but still 2-3m away, hold his line and there is no way Dzeko can be onside and likely Naingolan doesn't even play that pass. Awful and it's not even about the misjudged header.
Oh come on, he had to look at the ball, saw Dzeko making a run in the corner of his eye so followed him. He was stupid to try and go for a header (completely misjudged the flight) but we can’t blame him for that. Had he simply stood his ground when Dzeko received the ball we would have been fine.
Of course he should play him offside ... Lovren was 7-8m deeper than VVD and Robertson ! Why ? That was the error, not so much the missed header.
And why was he not checking where his defensive line was ? Like any good CB would have been doing ? Had he done that Dzeko couldn't have been 10m up the pitch from where he otherwise would have been !
No. It's simple .... just stop the video at the exact moment Naingolan plays the ball, you don't have to guess. He was 7-8m deeper than VvD and Robertson. And what is this about needing a 'reason' for VvD or Robertson not to be deeper, it's a team game and the defensive line should be exactly that, a line, it's not based on 'reasons' why one person or another is deeper. It's how offsides come to pass.
I think your idea of a metre is slightly larger than the actual given measurement ! Though it's maybe not quite the 8m I mentioned (those lines are more than 5m apart, you couldn't pace them in 5 stretching steps). However look at Lovren, ball watching and not looking at Dzeko, in fact I doubt he even knows he's there. And of course there needs to be a rough line, not staggered all over the pitch, to enable offsides from long passes to even be a 'thing'.
He does, but I don't get why he thought that was the time to charge forward.
