We shouldn't be celebrating too much. Still have a big game left at OT.
I'm not sure if this Man U side can beat us by two or three goals but who knows? Watford did it.

Yea, another goal or two and I would feel very confident.
I still feel we have probably done enough but if we don't show up for the second leg we could easily get done over.

Agreed as far as that goes, but Watford wouldn't have beaten last night's team, certainly not by three goals.

Nonetheless, it's true we have to keep our feet on the ground. I'm sure Klopp will make sure we do.

Well, I think we all really enjoyed that. As a team we played very well, and dominated the game, and the only disappointment was the fact we should have scored 4 or 5. United were disjointed and erratic, with a very poor midfield and little in attack. De Gea was superb, but apart from the occasional glimpse of quality from Martial and Mata, and Fellaini's usual obdurate brutality, they had nothing to offer.

Mignolet (7) Some booming kicks and smart catches, but had a quiet evening overall.

Clyne (8) Zoomed up and down the right with gay abandon, and caused no end of problems for United. Quality display in attack and defence, even if his final ball was, as usual, not as good as it should be.

Lovren (7) It's possible that he might be the best CB at the club right now. Another assured performance.

Sakho (6) Started the game looking punch-drunk, and one dismal clearance was followed by an equally dismal attempt at a tackle, which was close to being a penalty. He was much improved in the second half and made some strong challenges and clearances. I've never seen a defender who looks SO permanently on the verge of losing the ball, or doing something braindead, but his clumsy gait and odd movement still usually gets the job done. An enigma.

Moreno (7) Had one or two moments of indecision, but his strength, aggression and pace are a genuine asset, and he had another good game. Admittedly Rashford was totally lost out on the right, but Moreno snuffed any danger out and then immediately looked to attack.

Can (7) He was again almost impossible to dispossess, and used the ball effectively. Good scrap with Fellaini, who rarely comes up against someone his physical equal.

Henderson (7) Certainly needed Can to help with Fellaini, he was another who improved as the game progressed. Missed one good chance, but a good display overall.

Lallana (8) Tireless and creative, he showed some delightful skills on the ball, and set up Firmino for the goal. In good form.

Firmino (8) Another who allies a lovely touch and technique with a remarkable work rate. He's never going to play on the shoulder of defenders and run onto balls, he hasn't the pace, but his movement and finishing instincts look great at the moment, and he links well with Lallana and Coutinho

Coutinho (7) Should have scored at least one goal; missed from a yard and had one beautiful effort saved by De Gea. Always driving forward and looked a threat, even if he wasn't quite as his best.

Sturridge (7) Scored a penalty, set up a very good chance and should have done better with his own great opportunity, but his close control and skill are evident. I wish he would be a bit more direct at times and use his pace more though.

Subs:

Allen (7) Impressive when he came on; worked ferociously hard, made challenges, won the ball and used it well. He helped us wrest control back for the last 20 minutes.

It's odd what's happened to Schneiderlin ... This was one of the best DMs in football the last few years ...

Makes me wonder ...Bar Clyne, do Soton players all drop a level when they leave St Mary's? Or is Wanyama the heart n' soul of that team and makes everyone look good by protecting them?
I never fancied him tbh but kept my opinion to myself when United signed him because the overwhelming opinion on here was that he was excellent and I thought I must be missing something and maybe I've been unlucky and only seen his few poor performances. I've seen him at least 10 times for United now and these are identical to the performance for Southampton IMO. He's good enough for the EPL but not good enough for a team with top 4 aspirations. I do think Wanyama did make Schneiderlin look better because he did much of the dirty work for him.

Wanyama's form has dropped this season and gets sent off far too often but I reckon he's sulking (like Hazard, Berahino and Rooney before he signed his last contract) and wants to force a move away and he's still an excellent player.

Lovren, Lallana and Clyne were all excellent for Saints so the form of Lovren and (to a lesser extent) Lallana since we signed them has been disappointing. Both players have recently being showing their Southampton form so hopefully they'll both still prove excellent signings.

Good result obviously but i don't think we were great.

I agree with that assessment. I think we were good to very good, but still not great - that would be the level we played at when we thumped City in both league games. The chance that Moreno and Sakho each gifted them could've been killer blows for us and we were lucky not to concede a goal or at least a shot on target on both occasions. And we should've had the tie absolutely done and dusted by the end of the night.

I hope Klopp tells them that we'll need to play even better at Old Trafford. Shit like those two chances we gave them could've knocked the stuffing out of us and need to be avoided.

Lallana looked like our third Brazilian last night, some of the interplay between the three of them was fantastic. With Sturridge also making many little sprints and runs pulling their defence we looked really fluid up front at times, a streak of ruthlessness with the finishing and we would have really embarrassed them.

Amazing that the ref, who has dished out loads of reds recently, bottled it with Fellaini. He booked Hendo for a studs up challenge in the first minute or so, but after a string of fouls inexplicably didn't book Fellaini for exactly the same foul towards the end there despite giving the free kick! Horrible horrible cunt that Fellaini - got away with murder, but if V G puts him in a two man midfield again I hope he gets away without the ban.

In the pre-match thread i predicted a 2-0 home win and followed that up by saying that if my prediction proved correct we would then go to Old Trafford and win 1-3. The logic being that United are a poor team with a particular weakness going forward..........if they have to come out and attack us (which they do) we will hit them on the counter attack ruthlessly. I would play Firmino, Coutinho, Lallana and Studge from the start because one goal for us and the tie is over.

That thread on redcafe, the user 'montpelier' who turns up around page 8 or 9 is something else.

There are always going to be chances for both sides, especially when playing a 'big' team. It would be surprising in the extreme if there wasn't. What was impressive is how well we restricted them and how we dealt with their attacks. The only time I was nervous at all was with Fellaini's header - he should have scored.

It's very naive to expect any team not to give up a chance or three. We did well.

I'd put my house on us scoring over there. However I expect it to be tight from the beginning, there is no need for United to go all Gung-ho. 1-1 at worst, they may give up after we score in which case we could well win, that would be doubly sweet, winning home and away to knock them out.

Is was the victim chant they were singing last night wasn't it? Or were their others too?
The S*n was right /Murderers was quite popular.

The thing is, it's not exactly rare is it? They sing it every match no matter who they are playing. It's the majority of the cunts singing it as well, it's not one or two. There is no comparison with us having a couple of dickheads doing Munich chants when we play them.

Exactly, the few times I watch them play they always bring out the Gerrard song and usually more, for a team that's won so much, it's embarrassing how obsessed they are with us. Last night in the match thread I was going on about it, sure they were playing us so they want to give it a go, but for the first 30mins (stopped listening after that), they didn't sing one single song about their players or clubs outside of a chant of "Manchester, Manchester, Manchester" to try and disrupt YNWA, but about 6 or 7 derogatory ones about us. Again I get away fans want to give it to the opposition, I'd expect us to do the same and sing a few songs about them, but I'd also have expected us to sign YWNA, Fields of Anfield road as well as a few generic Liverpool chants, do United fans really have so little pride, or such an obsession with us, that they can't sing about their own, very successful, club?

What a good idea. We could put it up on the big screen for everybody to see. 😉

I thought Lovren did well yesterday. He got rid first time, no messing. Good game again from him.

He's looking like a really solid defender right now, oddly enough our CB situation looks sorted with Skrtel returning from injury and Matip joining in the summer.

The way our CBs have played these two seasons, I wouldn't trust their form over a few games to be a good indicator of their potential ability and consistency over a season. These fuckers (and I'll include Mignolet and Moreno) have let us down and given us so much grief these two seasons, they shouldn't get away too easily just by playing a handful of good games now.

Ferdinand, 2 March:

"I don't look at that team and think, he can hurt me. There is nothing to put you on the back foot at all.

"If I'm Jurgen Klopp, I'm a worried man. I'm thinking roll on to the next window."

Ferdinand was then asked by fellow pundit Steve McManaman how many players he would change in the summer.

"The whole lot," he replied. "You could potentially do them all if you wanted to".

Ferdinand 10 March:

You've been merked, mate.

The look on the faces of scholes and Ferdinand made that much sweeter after 92 minutes
I especially enjoyed Ferdinand's comment about elbows into defenders just before the elbow into Can's face. Ferdinand's face after Webb's opinion was a picture.

Thought Clyne was fucking superb last night. His best game in a Liverpool shirt. He seemed refreshed after not playing at Palace.
