Players tell Rafa Benitez: Bring Michael Owen back

I felt certain that at LAST we'd go a summer without 'bring back owen' threads proping up the forum.
amazing that some STILL ignore the injuries, the minutes (or lack thereof) on the pitch, the wages, the age. fuck how he left who gives a shit in the here and now there is no good 'footballing' reason to bring him back. oh sorry, he's 'free'. JEEZ!!

Just as amazing are the cunts (like you) who show a total lack of respect for a player who score a hatful for us and don't see that a "free" Michael Owen is clearly a better gamble than a free Andriy Voronin or or a £20m Robbie Keane

Not worth bothering. The hystericals have made their minds up on Michael Owen.

Aldridge played 104 times for liverpool scoring 63 goals, a goal every 1.6 games including 50 league goals in 83 outings. let's sign him.

one of the biggest divs on the site? HOORAY!! forutnately I have shining lights like yourself that show me how construct proper posts. ha ha

I think it's possible to value what a great servant he was for us but still not want him to come back tho.

Free transfer or not, a signing-on fee and his wages are going to amount to a good bit of money.

I think we all know that he's NOT going to come back on a pay as you play, and why should he?

Some Premiership team is likely to come in for him in due course.

Hell,maybe even Wolves.

this seems to have escaped some people

You're all saying no to him but were far better off with Owen than we are with some shite starlet from South America that'll cost a couple of million and then fuck off the following summer to Turkey.

so the signing of owen can't be judged on its own merits? we should sign owen because we may sign someone who is worse? like a previous post, we should sign owen because he is less of a gamble than voronin or keane?

Owen couldn't get a game ahead of Mark Viduka at Newcastle, under his long time mate Alan Shearer.

Having seen Owen in the flesh at Anfield he looks like a pale imitation of the player he once was. No pace, even less strength and not much ability on the ball.

Spion, your pink spectacle / 'cretin's advocate' stance on anything that isn't 101% PRO-LIVERPOOL is getting tiresome mate.

Give it a rest.

If he could stay fit for 5 minutes it would be yes, and with no sentiment coming into it. He still is an instinctive goal scorer (despite Kevin Keegan's ludicrous statement that he was not ever one). But the idea is that we get someone capable of covering for Torres in the case of his hamstrings playing up. It would seem kind of crazy to sign Owen to fill that brief. Or stupid.

If it's a choice between selling Alonso and getting Barry to boost the English players count, or Keeping Alonso and signing Owen and Johnson who could both potentially compete for first team spots; I would route for the later.

Provided we address our most significan weak point along with that. A match winner to play left or right wing. Preferably right wing.

It would be good to get this minimum number of English player in the squad garbage out of the way as soon as possible.

But i do fear that Owen's career as a top footballer may be well behind him. May be he can have one last stint after this summer's recuperation and pre-season training...but it certainly is clear that he is on his last leg. Fowler on the other hand was already finished when we got him back.

cretin's advocate, tee hee ;D

Despite everything I'd still take him back, and not just for sentimental reasons.

We're very thin on the ground upfront and we've been saying a back-up striker for Fernando Torres is required. Michael Owen couldn't fulfil this role - no where near, and someone else, IMO, should be bought in reasonably cheaply who can also lead the line. What Michael Owen can provide is an option on the bench to come on if we're struggling and be that 'fox in the box' who can tuck one away, and give us vital points which may otherwise have been wasted. And if he keeps playing well and gets fit, who knows what can happen.

The "class is permanent" sounds hollow when you consider he wasn't Shearer's - a man who begged Owen to come to Newcastle and is/was a close friend -  first choice striker when his team were staring at the Championship. Statements like that mean he's bound to 'come good', which is nonsense. I will say though, that goals are in his blood - despite his injuries, he's adapted his game and still has a very impressive strike-rate. Bringing Michael home will be of very little risk and will add to our depleted front line.

I hope Benitez listens.

Whether or not he's better than Voronin and Keane, that's really not the point John. We need someone who can step into Torres' shoes if he gets injured. The problem with Owen is he's never bloody fit himself.

interesting fact, owen made more appearances this season than torres.

How many did he score Spidey?

Why can't we get both?

Kuyt's pretty much a RWF these days, and then we've only got N'Gog. Our lack of depth upfront is often understated on here, I think.

The Owen deal could be wrapped up very quickly and wouldn't touch our transfer budget (I don't think he'd demand an outrageous signing-on fee)

Neil whilst I would always respect your opinions I have to say that the John Aldridge analogy has to be one of the silliest ever on 6CM

If he's willing to accept a contract that is reflective of the 2009 version of Michael Owen rather than the 2004 version, it'd be worth considering.

the point is you have two ridiculously prolific strikers, two fantastic servents on the pitch but in the here and now that is in the past and we need to look forwards. okay, the analogy is silly because no way could john play but my point is the stats are recorded in history and bear no relavence when considering a player's current worth.

owen was fantastic when he was here but the only question is whether he could do a job for us now, I don't think he could that's my opinion the people that think he can are entitled to their opinion as well, just bear in mind how many games he would be fit for and how much he would inflate our already burgeoning wage bill.

I actually havnt said that we should sign him. My point is that he is only 29 and to suggest that he is washed up is a bit of an over reaction. OK his time at Newcastle hasnt been the best but he had a great season at Real even though he was used very sparingly.
