PL Opposition Tidbits

He used to pick on some posters but they all lasted more than him so not sure he was really deterrrent once you get over his initial abuse. Never the same once his local Chinese closed for Covid and showed that shite looking watch anyway.
“I’m not racist cos I speak to the people who work in the Chinese”

That's survivorship bias. He ran off all kinds of posters, some of which I wish were still around and others not so much. The ones that lasted have some serious staying power.

Arsenal's run is pretty rough, too. The kicker is we have Real Madrid right before the City game. Sometimes that can sharpen minds and focus, but it's a tricky one for Slot to manage during an already demanding run of games.

do you reckon uefa would be furious if we played the reserves against madrid? the champions league format is shite and ripe for that sort of shenanigans.

Everyone would be furious if we played the reserves - not least the fans who I presume paid a premium for tickets.

Besides - getting a walloping from Real Madrid doesn’t tend to help us.

uefa manufactured this big game though with their new format, that’s why i’d like to see their faces if it was treated with the contempt it arguably deserves. surely some other fans are feeling less invested in this competition now too.

definitely best to keep the results flowing of course

Is it just because people aren’t familiar with the format?

I’d rather see us play games against Real than some team of east European cloggers that I can’t pronounce, if I’m honest.

There does seem to be some reasonable “rewards” for finishing in the top 8 - not least playing 2 games less and therefore auto-advancing further.

I suspect that part might sharpen things up a bit in the final rounds.

Early round format, doesn’t really matter to me, changing that format wouldn’t seem to create any more or less investment - until the final rounds - but that’s always been the way.

yea i’ll be the first to admit i’m not sure when i’m supposed to start caring about games in this format, 2 more games seems like less jeopardy and i don’t think anyone is quite sure what the points target is to get through.

i’d agree that there have been some shite group stage opponents and games but on the other hand are games against big sides going to be devalued by having them too often?

there are too many matches i’d like to see it bite them in the arse

Too many games plus too many games of big sides spanking crap sides and more so than normal it feels like.

It’s only 2 more games initially and it feels like there’s been more games against top teams - I mean there is because you play 2 teams from each pot Vs 1 team twice from each pot we’re not inz

So, for us under the old system we wouldn’t play Real or Leipzig, we’d play Milan or Leverkusen twice, PSV or Lille twice, Girona or Bologna twice.

This feels more interesting - it’s just the “league” isn’t going to make much sense yet - hard to say how many points will be needed to get top 8 - I’d say 20+.

I reckon another 3 points guarantees we stay in the comp.

Human nature. People hate change in their routine, food, domicile and CL format.
It's better than the previous group stages which were for the most part an utter waste of time. There've been some cracking matches already and RM should be another.

I think 15-16 pts is the general consensus for Top 8. 20+ is way way too many (6 wins and 2 draws for 8 teams who will also have to play 2 games against top tier teams )!!

It's just like the PL league table. It's good to get a good start but not done until it's done with difficult games for everyone.

17-18pts I think. 16pts borderline, that’s 2 pts per game and at the moment that leaves you 10th.

I like the new format in that we don’t have to suffer duplicate fixtures.

It would be a fine number of games if we hadn’t already had two internationals breaks with another one again in Nov.

Two extra games but that is a lot in original 6 game league plus it was done ny early September and now carries in into late Jan.
Jusr feels more random and feels like there has been a lot more big spankings. I was interested in the change but this format may go in the way of the 2 league on in earliy 2000s.
Yeah, I think prettue much 10pts is enough for top 16.

Top 16 means fuck all. It’s top 8 then top 24.

you know i think you might’ve partially cracked my champions league apathy there. i’m not getting enough PL and too much of other things.

@Frogfish is right about change too because the old format was very stale and producing uninteresting / meaningless ties frequently but we’re very used to it. i think i’m against anything that produces more games though. everything is expanded these days with the exception of domestic cups which seem to be constantly under pressure to contract.
