PL Opposition Tidbits

I respect that view, but I don't share it. It seems to me to be based on an underlying belief that all accusations of racism are automatically true and *that* seems to me to be not only wrong but dangerously so, because it prejudges any available evidence.

The thing is you can't always prove these things in a court of law, and that shouldn't be the standard. And the attempt to believe all accusations are true, is based on the fact it was disguised and defended for so long. Kind of like women alleging male misconduct.

Racism is a little more easily detected by those who experience it. There's usually a fair amount of subtle expressions, and ways of reading it, if you ask the offending player a few questions.

Depends which standard of proof you have in mind, Niall. I'd agree it shouldn't be the criminal standard (beyond reasonable doubt) but IMO the civil standard (on the balance of probabilities) has to apply (otherwise you're left with no standard of proof at all, which just leads to witchhunts) and I don't see how it can be applied without a neutral look at all available evidence.

This is fair, but I am assuming that Podence reacted to what he saw and heard, and I don't think he would have twatted an opposition player unless he was convinced about what had gone on.
And on the automatic assumption of racism thing, a little insight on the Firmino / Mason Holgate incident a few years ago. Holgate accused Bobby of calling him the N-word. When the team at Melwood told Bobby about the accusation, he had a puzzled look on his face and when they asked him why his response was "What does that word mean?". He didn't say it, he couldn't have done, he didn't even know the word, much less how much of an insult it would have been. But he was literally a toss of a coin from a lengthy ban because of pressure put on by Kick it Out who just assumed he must have been guilty.

If you go to Bergamo, Brescia, Verona and Como, you would understand where im coming from.
Even southern Italians are not welcome there.

That incident has been very much in my mind in this discussion. If the approach taken in a number of posts above had been applied, Bobby would have got a long ban and that lying toerag Holgate would have got away with it.

Its a big hypocrisy though as a bit of History would teach us that a big part of Northern Italy's prosperity has been built by workers from the south.

Wonder if in this case the underlying problem is that Ederson knows Alisson's the better keeper, so can't tolerate anything which openly suggests that he (Ederson) is less than stellar himself.
