Goodbye letter for Liverpool’s fans: “Thanks for everything, I will see you soon”
Pepe-440x312.jpg
It is a strange feeling for me to think that next season I will not be a Liverpool player. For the past eight years, that is all I have known. The club, the staff, the city, the people and the supporters have played a massive part in my life. Liverpool is special in a way that only those who are lucky enough to experience the club close up can understand. It has given me memories that will live with me forever and friendships that will last just as long.
But more than anything else, it has given me an understanding of what it is like to play for the most wonderful English club. I may not have won as many trophies and medals as I would have liked since joining in 2005 but the experiences I have been a part of are as important as any silverware. I now understand how supporters can lift a team and inspire them to do special things. I appreciate that there is something unique about Anfield and the atmosphere it creates. I believe that anything is possible no matter what the situation is because at Liverpool there is no such thing as a lost cause. And I have been humbled by the fight for justice for the 96 which showed me that the Liverpool people will always fight for what they believe in.
I know that I have been blessed to be part of a Club like that and I hope that in return I have always given my best and represented Liverpool in the right way. There have been good times and bad times but no matter what the situation has been I hope that my passion has been clear. I have been asked what my favourite Liverpool moment was and if I had to pick one it wouldn’t be a save or winning a trophy. It would be my celebration against Manchester United when David Ngog scored a late goal. That is probably the quickest I have ever run in my life! It shows what playing for Liverpool meant to me and also that there was nothing better than winning a big game at Anfield. I used to look at the Kop when we scored those kind of goals in big games and I would be jealous of the supporters going crazy. If the closest I will get to that is running the length of the pitch and jumping on my team mates backs then that will do for me.
Obviously, I won’t be able to do that next season but I hope that the supporters and my team mates will be able to enjoy many more moments like that. They deserve the best of times and it would give me so much pleasure to see Liverpool back where they belong, challenging for trophies and getting back into the top four. That was where the club was when I first arrived and although I am leaving a different club, one with new owners, a new manager, new players and new challenges, I honestly believe that Liverpool can reach those levels again.
I am disappointed that I will not be part of that and although it was not my decision to leave I will accept it just like I have always accepted any decision that Liverpool have taken for me. They signed me, picked me, gave me some of the best experiences of my life and looked after me. If they feel that the best thing for me and for them is for me to go on loan to Napoli for a season then so be it. Napoli is a new challenge for me and I know that the fans are just as passionate about their team as the Liverpool fans, so I am really looking forward to playing for them this season and I will give my all.
But if I have one regret, it is the way that I am leaving. It is only natural that I would be disappointed that the Liverpool management agreed to loan me to Napoli without telling me first, I thought that I deserved better than that even though I understand that difficult decisions have to be taken in football. A lot has been made about me informing the club that if an offer came in from Barcelona that I would have liked them to consider it. But I had also spoken to the club about the possibility of extending my contract if the offer was not made. I told the manager that I wanted to play for Liverpool and that Barcelona would only become an option for me if the opportunity arrived, like the rumours said it would, as it would be a chance for me to go back home. When it didn’t come I was happy to fight for my place so I was surprised that Liverpool decided it was in the club´s interests to send me to Napoli instead.
None of this will change my feelings for the club or the people in any way and now I have to look forward to a new challenge with Rafa Benitez, who I consider to be the best manager I have worked with, and I am fortunate to be going from one great club to another. Napoli remind me in many ways of the Liverpool I found in 2005, in all the affection they have shown me on my arrival, in having an ambitious project, even in coinciding and working with Benitez again…This memory which in part unites me with you, makes me happy and feel very motivated to begin this new project.
This is my chance to say thank you to everyone for everything that you have given to me and to my family. My children consider Liverpool to be their home and hopefully their love for the city and also for the club will only grow while we are away. I would have liked to have been able to say goodbye in a different way but because of the way the move came about this was not possible.
Maybe in the near future I can do it properly so that I can show my appreciation to you but all I would ask now is that you keep on inspiring the manager and the players just like you always have done and help Liverpool to become the club that you deserve once again. I would like nothing better than to come back at the end of my year away and for Liverpool to be back where they belong.
Thank you for everything. Good luck. I will see you soon.
Pepe Reina.

I like him, he gave us a lot, but just a couple of points got me.
First of all, he's disappointed in Liverpool's management because he didn't want to leave, and wasn't informed of his move until the decision was already made.
But he also says he WOULD HAVE LEFT had an offer from Barca come in. And that he would have signed an extension had it not.
So what was the club supposed to do during this waiting period? Suck its thumb while Pepe and his agent tried to sort a move, only to take the massive risk of having no first choice goalkeeper and clubs rubbing their hands at the prospect of ripping us off? Fuck off. We made the right choice about replacing a 31 year old who wasn't fully committed.

And it's a nice way of saying goodbye by mentioning Benitez as the best manager he worked with. It can be taken innocently of course, but with his unhappiness towards the management I imagine it's a little dig at Rodgers.

Anyway, mostly happy memories of him, and I still think he's a top goalie.

Rodgers is one cold ass mutha.

He does come off as this - I like this quality in a manager, one needs it to be very successful. However, in this situation, I think Pepe saying 'Barca comes in and I leave' made Rodgers act ... JM pretty much sums it up.

Definitely one of the best keepers in our illustrious history - top 3. It's only a pity he'll leave without more medals (like Torres, Kuyt, etc).

Very clear and very honest, I really hope the money we save on his wages with be worth the loss to the team in terms of his experience and professionalism, he always came across as a top fella and a leader so...yeah... finances eh...

As for the rest well, shabby things happen in footy and I think Pepe knows that, it was decent of him to take it well and say his piece while showing his obvious affection for the place. I don't take it as too much for a foreign player to say that if his hometown club comes in we should consider it, the fact that he was willing to fight for his place speaks volumes for me. I hope he has a cracking season with Napoli and rediscovers his very best form and gets his wish next year.

Cracking player.

Great goalkeeper and one of my all-time favourite LFC players - good luck Pepe YNWA.

It would be easy to be a cold ass mutha to any Liverpool player who wanted to switch to United.

I'm not glad Pepe's gone, he's been brilliant for us over the years and he's a wonderful keeper, but when you remember his desire to replace Van Der Sar, and this summers desire to join Barcelona, and then couple that with his wish to retire in Spain, Rodgers had every right to ask is now the right time to replace him, and IMO, he's made the correct decision.

He said he'd leave of barca wanted him. It looked like they would.

We bought a replacement. They didn't want him.

Tough shit pepe. You can't have it both ways.

The club/Rodgers have handled this well, although Rodgers comments about competition for pepe made him look at best daft, at worse deceitful.

seriously , some of you numpties drive me nuts . Firstly , if reina has been tempted by moves in the past well you can hardly blame him . At the time he was very highly rated in the game and we were losing our better players left , right and centre with many of these his spanish mates . It would only be natural to have some doubts and wonder if it's best for you to stay also . And do we really know he was happy to move to United ?

And yeah i more than understand that we couldn't sit around and see if barca came in for him or not but surely we could have made this clear to him and explained our plans . And why is it so hard to show a senior player who's been at the club for 8 yrs some respect and inform him early doors that we need to move him on and a deal for napoli has come up ? Yeah you need to be ruthless at times but you can show respect also .

Also it sounds like he / we knew the barca move wasn't happening from quite an early stage so only time will tell if spending this money on mingolet and not somewhere else in the team was worth it .

anyway he'll be fine , he's joining a better team !

He was happy enough for his dad to spout off his desire to play for barca at every opportunity

Great keeper in first 2 years, still a big personality.

Wrong to get rid. Best keeper since Clem. Another sign we are heading for mid-table obscurity. But I don't expect our 'knowledgeable' fans to see it as anything other than another greedy, past it player being culled for the sake of the vision of BR.
Most clean sheets in first 50,100, 200 and 250 league games.
3 Golden Gloves.
11 successive clean sheets.
Most European games (84) by an LFC keeper.
Top bloke and will be missed.

I've been a great Pepe fan and would have loved him to spend the rest of his career as our #1 keeper.
Unfortunately he indicated more than once that this was not his plan. He's been making it known for the last 2-3 years, and even more so during the last few months when it was reported of Barca's interest.
Hence we should have prepared ourselves for the day after. The manager has to act proactively rather than just be caught surprised when a player decides to leave.

I'm very sorry to see Pepe leave, but I can also understand the manager's choice.

Sad to see him go but it is probably best for both him and the club. No need to throw crap at him now, he's been a great servant. Hopefully he'll come back as our experienced back up keeper (with lower wages).

Good to get that list of achievements out Sean. He has been an absolute star for us and one I will remember fondly.

However, that does not detract from the fact that his performances last season were variable and there were signs he was waning slightly. It may be that a year with Napoli in the thick of Champions' League action and a battle for the title rejuvenates him. I hope so, even if it doesn't benefit us.

Fair point. Maybe he was growing a bit stale, but the way people are going on about him it's as if he was 40 not 30.
He's fucking 30!
Maybe if we had owners who knew what they were doing, with a manager that was experienced and could lead us back to the top then he would have never thought of going anywhere else.
What will Mignolet be like? No better that's for sure.

I'm sorry he's gone but he wanted to go to Barca, we weren't prepared to see that happen and not be prepared, so we went and signed a new and good replacement.

Imagine if we'd been all sentimental and let Barca come in and take him and we didn't have anyone lined up. People would have been lining up to pop at Ayre, Rogers, the Yanks etc.

Plus, he's used a letter to thank us to have a dig at the manager and the club - not very classy. Perhaps he should have kept the two apart and thanked us publicly and privately informed the club what he thought of their methods.

I'm with you on FSG. The jury is out on Brentan... but replacing someone on a steady downward curve with one of the best young goalies in the world is a good move.

I know lots of keepers play well into their 40s. Pepe isn't going to. Not with his build.
