Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina maintains that the Anfield club are a better side than they were last season.

Despite the Reds currently sitting eighth in the league table, the Spaniard insists that the Carling Cup triumph and an FA Cup final date are indicators of the progress made this season.

"There's no doubt we've improved from last season already," Reina told LFC Magazine. "We've won the Carling Cup with the possibility of a second while also qualifying for Europe.

"The target of the club is still to get back in the Champions League. But before the start of the season, if someone had said we'd win the Carling Cup, reach the final of the FA Cup, as well as getting seventh, probably most people would have taken that.

"It's always good to go back to winning days. Some people might say the Carling Cup is not that important but, at the end of the day, it's a trophy. We knocked out Stoke, Chelsea and Manchester City.

"It was not easy. So it was a well-deserved success and I was pleased to be part of it."

Reina also admitted that he was under the most pressure he had ever been in his time at Anfield for the number one jersey, after both Alexander Doni and Brad Jones staked claims for the position during the 29-year-old's recent suspension.

"This has been probably the most difficult period of my Liverpool career," he admitted. "They are breathing down my neck so I have to be up for it and do my best."

hmmm...not sure about that pepe.

He's trying to sound as positive as possible at a very bad time. I don't think anyone really believes he's stupid enough to believe it. The good thing that comes out of it is that it's a damned sight better than him saying 'Promises have been broken and I'm off to Chelski or somewhere else'.

Hahahahaha! I wonder if he had to stifle a snigger when he actually said that.

He made a beeline for Jones at the end of the semi against the bitters (as did Suarez and one or two others). Perhaps this was said mainly for Jones' sake and he felt he had to include Doni as well.

It's pathetic when our own fans are doing the job of the journalists and twisting the interview to make Pepe sound like a dick.

Not at all. He's a great lad, relieved he's not leaving, and just having a larf on that "We would have taken seventh" - I doubt he believes it either.

He's trying to keep things positive. People are very quick to run us down over our shite League campaign, but we've already won a cup, and we're the final of another. Pepe knows we have to drastically improve things. As Macca said, it would be worse if he was hinting at leaving.

Read on Twitter that we're looking to rope in Xavi Valero back as goalkeeping coach. Highly rated by Pepe.

If thats true Luis Suarez will start banging in the goals aswell! Hope to God this happens, excellent coach!!!!!

Every time the opposition shoot i'm fearful Pepe will contrive to jump out of the way and they score.

Once again, i think he could have done better for West Brom's goal on Sunday.
