I'm not one for sweeping statements and the like but Pepe used to save EVERY penalty fired at him and now he NEVER saves from the spot.

Why I ask you, why?

Last penalty he saved was against Man U, right? But Rooney got to the rebound first.

Dunno why, he's better at shoot-out's?

But is it rightly so though?

I think it was Ron Atkinson who said if you stand still in a shootout you'll definitely save one and probably have a chance with another 2.

If someone puts it in a corner properly you're not gonna save it anyway.

Because most are blasted up the middle and Pepe always picks a side and rightly so.

Is the right answer. Grob used to do the same and I can't ever remember him saving a pen. He never even looked like saving one. Just used to fling himself to the ground...usually in the wrong direction.

Maybe so SG but a shootout is a totally different situation.

Explain...

Grobbelaar actually saved quite a few apparently. More than any other Liverpool keeper did. That surprised me a bit too.

He will have probably have a minimum of 4 to 5 chances to guess right I suppose.
Oppose to one chance in a normal spot kick situation.

There's no formula for saving penalties really other possibly reading up on favored corners of the taker etc.

He's a good keeper and spreads himself well for peno's and due to that, he'll save a fair few.

Really? I can't believe that. I honestly can't remember one save he made.

Apparently so. I had a look on lfchistory - http://www.lfchistory.net/Stats/PlayerPenaltiesMissedByOpposition.aspx

I can't remember any of them either.

Bloody hell he had a great record! I don't even remember the two against Everton. Sorry Brucie I stand corrected.

Keepers don't have a lot to lose with penalties generally speaking. If they save they are the hero, but if they don't save then its fair enough - the pressure is always on the penalty taker.

However, one of the ways that they can come out of it badly is by being seen to not even be trying. If they stand still that is what it looks like. Obviously they have as much chance of saving it by standing still as they have by diving left or right but it doesn't look like that does it?

When I was younger I used to think every penalty was scored. You had great penalty takers in those days. That West Ham full-back who never, ever missed...Ray? The only keeper who ever saved penalties in those days, apart from Grob evidently, was Paul Cooper of Ipswich.

Ray Stewart - one of the best I've ever seen. Le Tissier was mustard at it too - missed one in 40 plus he took for Southampton.

Our very own Jan Molby wasn't too far off that either. Scored 42, missed about 3

I'd be interested to see what Dirk's record is like.

I believe he's never missed one for us, but I wonder about overall career?

It is not easy to save penalty. Some people comment like as if you're playing kick-a-bout with your mates...it isn't.

I dont understand. If most are blasted up the middle why is picking a side the right thing to do?

Sounds like you are sayign that Pepe is doing the right thing, and it's those pesky penalty takers who have it wrong by blasting it in the middle; if only they were more conrinthian-like and aimed for a side, like they're supposed to ...

Not a criticism of Pepe, just trying to undertsand the logic of that statement
