Pellegrini representative confirms contacts with Liverpool
Wednesday October 20, 2010
Source: dpa
Manuel Pellegrini is in negotiations to direct the ailing Liverpool, announced today the representative of the strategist, Jesus Martinez.

"We had some contacts, but as the club is in the process of change, and no one knows who is boss, no progress on the topic," Martinez revealed.

The choice of the former coach of Real Madrid, came about because of the poor performance of the England team, now led by Roy Hodgson.

Martinez added that the possibility of commanding technically Liverpool Chilean appeals more to other offers from the last time, junior teams and tradition.
"Pellegrini has had offers from clubs in Italy, but initially wanted to wait a bit to some better option," said the representative.

"And Liverpool is a club that Manuel would like to address," he said.

It's a google translate but I think I'd rather him than Rijkaard - although I don't know what his English is like

If we had to make a permanent appointment tomorrow I'd prefer Pellegrini to Rijkaard.

But we don't, and shouldn't.

I agree with that.

I'll take either over "we might sell Torres to nMan U" Hodgson. Oh do fuck off Roy.

I'd love Pellegrini, apparently good English speaker as well

That seals the deal as far as I'm concerned.

Manuel Pellegrini, the former Real Madrid coach, has held talks with Kenny Dalglish over the managerial vacancy at Liverpool despite Roy Hodgson remaining the club's preferred candidate to succeed Rafael Benítez at Anfield.

Pellegrini was dismissed by Real last month for failing to deliver in the Champions League or beat Barcelona to the title, although he did produce a club record 96 points during his one and only season at the Bernabéu. The Chilean's agent last night denied reports that the 56-year-old met Dalglish at Heathrow airport but Pellegrini was in England yesterday and did meet the Liverpool legend who is overseeing the search for Benítez's replacement alongside the managing director, Christian Purslow. Dalglish has told the Liverpool board that he would like the job in the absence of any superior candidates.

Negotiations with Pellegrini, who worked with the Liverpool goalkeeperJosé Reina during a successful five-year spell in charge of Villarreal, reveal that Anfield officials are working through a short-list of candidates to succeed Benítez, although it is understood Hodgson remains top of that list. The Fulham manager has yet to receive an official approach from Liverpool and last night reaffirmed his contentment at Craven Cottage from South Africa, where he is commentating for the BBC.

Asked about Liverpool's interest, Hodgson said: "I'm happy at Fulham. It is all speculation and I can't enlighten you. I don't know any more than you do." An official move for Hodgson from Liverpool is anticipated next week, however.

But Pellegrini is a good coach and after having a good look around in the summer he should still be one of the top picks.
So if we can get him now, why don't we? He'll have the rest of the season to work with the team, find who he wants to keep and who to go. New players in January then again in the summer.

@Boozer
LOL, fail?

I was never sure over the language issue with pellegrini, but if he is fluent in english then my stance somewhat changes on him

More and more noise tonight, some of it conflicting, all the same conclusion, and that is that Roy Hodgson won't see the week out at #LFC 4 minutes ago via web

Show me his trophy cabinet. In any case, "good" isn't enough. I want the best for this club. Accepting "good" got us Roy Hodgson, who was Manager of the Year last season.

And there's no way we can or should make any assumption about whether Pellegrini would be on the list by next summer. I'm not talking about having a look around *in* the summer either, I'm talking about doing so between now and next summer, so we can do a proper number on it and see who would welcome an approach even if they're already employed.
