Palace up bid.. £30m for Benteke

If only we could ship out all the utter dross we buy every summer and recoup as much as we do for the strikers we buy compared to the other positions.

Not a single club in this world would pay more than 8mill for Markovich for example.

With him we effectively have the same bunch of players, because he's rarely produced for us and is never going to do so anything like consistently enough. And there's no way on this planet we're going to get more than we paid for him, unless the Chinese come in with a bid.

I genuinely don't think any of what you're predicting here is true, Benteke is a much more talented and well-rounded player than he's given credit for in these parts.

We paid what, 32-35M? Given the prices quoted this summer, I think we could surpass that number without shipping him to the far east. It just takes some not terrible negotiating, which there are some early signs that we might be capable of.

It comes down to if Klopp has him in his plans for next season. If not, then we should sell him, but otherwise I don't see the point.

They had a bid of £30m plus turned down for Batshuayi (if the press are to be believed), so I'd say the money is there.

If they really want him, they'll be back. We really need to get him off the books this window if possible, it's looking far less likely that we'll be able to offload Balotelli at his point so Benteke appears to be our most saleable unwanted striker!

I agree that Benteke's a talented player and have taken issue in previous threads with those who've said otherwise, but I'll bet you a tenner for charity here and now that we will not recoup what we paid for him, not given the way things have gone for him at LFC. Of course we won't sell him if Klopp wants to keep him, but that's not going to happen. Talented though he is, he just isn't suited to the high energy football which Klopp wants us, and Rodgers before him wanted us, to play.

Teams always want strikers, and Benteke is a proven top class PL striker who was never really suited to our playing style. We can expect further interest, and perhaps some competition for his services.

BTW, if we wanted to have a player plus cash deal I'd take Cabaye any day of the week. We don't have anything like his quality in the set piece and in terms of passing ability in midfield.

Which makes his signing pretty infuriating.

Absolutely. Complete and utter panic signing by a manager desperate to keep his job and rolling the dice 'coz he thought he had nowhere else to turn.

So we are basically swapping Benteke for Mane. Benteke is more of a striker while Mane is more mobile, a wide player and should fit in to our system better.

I'm happy with that and it should leave us with funds to further improve the team.

If this goes through, we've only spent £5m net (on Karius) so far haven't we?

The Benteke signing typifies the logic in having a DoF or committee. I'm not saying it's a good for a bad thing but it highlights why owners want safeguards in place. It smacked of short-termism from day one and the owners couldn't understand how the pressure they were applying to Rodgers was impacting upon his transfer decisions.

*cough* Balotelli

Not even sure that we will replace him with another striker. I would, but with Klopp playing one up top and no Europe, I think he may stick with origi, ings and studge and invest elsewhere

He already has - Mané. I'd be very surprised if Klopp brought in a forward now.

Signed by the committee also and has proved a disaster. We would be lucky to get half our money back.

Even the Chinese league don't want him

I wasn't suggesting the committee a DoF are a good idea. In fact I included very clear line in my post so avoid this discussion knowing some dullard would bring it up. Everyone knows Ballotelli was a committee signing who failed. It has nothing to do with what I said.

You being rather dim today sort of nullifies your 'dullard' retort. There's a direct comparison to be made between the two signings.

You couldn't be bothered to read my post properly and offered a pointless and shit contraction to a point I wasn't making.

Your post wasn't some deep and insightful revelation that wasn't obvious at first glance.
And just because for some strange reason you don't want to admit or accept the similarities and relevance to the Balotelli transfer doesn't mean they don't exist or are invalid.

Beneteke is a good player, and I would expect to recoup our money (give or take a couple of million) if we sell him this summer

But I'd be disappointed if we didn't replace him, or if Mane was supposed to be his replacement.

They're totally different. They don't even play in the same position. And Benteke scores more goals.

If we sell him, We need another proper striker. Sturridge is great but erratic and injury-prone. Ings has only played about twice.

We'd be left well short

Not to sure we'll do that with Klopp favouring 1 striker in the 4-2-3-1 and us having Origi, Ings and Studge. Firmino and Mane can play there aswell.

Rather develop Origi in all honesty.

What relevance does Ballotelli have to my point in the Benteke transfer highlights why the owners want safeguards in place to protect against short-term signings?

That the committee also get it wrong?

Well blow me down.

Both are limited players but Balotelli seems to have more between his ears. Not that he makes use of it much, though.
