Long running history of bad blood? Why is that?

Anyway, I can't remember many players we signed directly from Arsenal.
Last one I can remember was Michael Thomas. He never impressed me as a Liverpool player, and I'll forever remember *that goal*.
Before him, there was Ray Kennedy. A legend.

There were players who played for both clubs, but were not signed directly from Arsenal: Kolo, Anelka and Pennant.

Any others which I might be missing?

Jimmy Carter. The moment Kenny went mad. Jimmy bloody Carter.

edit - actually we sold him to Arsenal. I'd understand them resenting us for that. The Suarez thing - that was their fault.

We actually sold Jimmy Carter to Arsenal for the same amount of money we spent on him from Millwall.

God, I can forget the date of my wife's birthday, but ask me the transfer fee of Jimmy fucking Carter and I'm like "Why, £500,000, of course!"*

*I'm not going to Google it, because I hope that's not right. But I know it is.

Agree with dmish. If Lemar is available in this window, and we have managed to save some cash by pushing Naby back to next year, we need to drop the cash on this guy. He's 21 and is balling on the biggest stage. Knowing our luck we'll miss out, he'll have a storming year, big world cup and then be worth double by next summer.

Yep. I remembered him.
But I was referring to players we signed from Arsenal...

That was a strange transfer. Until that point Kenny had a fantastic record in the transfer market. Barnes, Aldridge and Beardsley for little more than the money we got for Rush. Venison seemed a strange buy but worked out very well. Then we bought Carter and Speedie and alarm bells started to ring - though as Carter moved on for the same fee and Speedie scored a few goals against Everton, neither proved a real disaster.

Such a drab signing this. Proper come down from the excitement of getting Keita and being linked with Lemar.

Yeah, Carter and then David Speedie was the one for me. Fine player, but I think he was 31 when we signed him from...Coventry?.... and it seemed a very muddled (almost desperate) purchase indeed.

Speedie - sort of - fitted into the Rosenthal pinch hitter role, in the sense of bringing someone in late in the season who'd get goals either through being completely unpredictable (Ronnie) or violent and ruthless (Speedie). But at his age it smacked of a manager who'd stopped looking forward. But Carter - jaysus. You just watched him and wondered what the heck he was. He merely obscured your view of the grass. A horrible player.

Agree it was a bit 'unLiverpool', but we had no fit strikers and he immediately scored against united and Everton. So didn't work out too bad. Was at that game at Old Toilet. Went mental when he scored.

Just pausing for a moment to reflect on the fact a youngish Ing-ur-lund international that some people rate (I don't) has 1. chosen to leave the Arse and 2. then tuned down the Chavs, because he wants to play for us. Times changing?

Still massively underwhelmed, but I was when we signed Crouch and I ended up loving him, so know the fuck knows? Pretty sure Klopp knows a tiny bit more than a load of shambling fools behind their keyboards.

Even now he's a bloody terrifying bloke. I saw him interviewed on LFCTV and it was like an FBI recording of Carlo Gambino. Chilling.

One view = Ox is a younger, but slightly shitter, James Milner utility midfielder/wing back (at a time when even Jimmy cant get into our team) - and £35m is bonkers for a player 12mths away from being out of contract

Other view = highly rated young England international, who will only benefit from Klopps coaching, who is very aware of the competition we have for places and is still willing to take on the challenge of coming to us; plus, it aint our money and the yanks need to keep getting their chequebook out the misers (also; being under 24 wouldnt Arse be owed a fee set by tribunal anyway even if we did snag him out of contract?).

Either way, its still pretty interesting that he has turned down Chelsea in favour of the mighty Reds.

That other great winger, Mark Kennedy, cost us £1.5m from Millwall. Record fee for a teenager.

I once went on the Alan Kennedy tour in the mid-90s and we were at Melwood meeting some of the players while others were still arriving. When Mark Kennedy drove in, literally nobody knew who he was. Brendan Batson was there for some PFA-related reason and more people recognised him than clocked Mark Kennedy.

Fwiw, I don't think he'll be a bad signing. He'll cover for Lallana while he's out, and back-up Mane/Salah later.

I think Klopp will improve him a bit too.

I'd expect about 7-8 goals and and a similar figure for assists as well.

If he does all that as a squaddie for the next 4-5 years, then he'd have been a solid signing.
Yep. This.

Good cover in a number of positions- but isn't that what he's doing at Arsenal ? Bit strange to say the least.

Has it been confirmed that its 40 mill and 180k per week?

No. 40 million is what Chelsea bid. Indications are we wouldn't pay that much but who knows. 180k per week is what he turned down at Arsenal but I suspect he wasn't angling for more money at this point. I wouldn't have thought we'd pay him anywhere near that much but, again, who knows.

I don't know if he's ever going to be good enough - he's one of several victims of that period when Wenger was eager to snap up the most exciting young prospects, seemingly more to keep them from his rivals rather than genuinely develop them. He and Walcott have spent all that time at Arsenal without even settling fully into a particular position. I think Klopp can improve him, and if he works hard, then who knows, maybe he'll thrive here. Too expensive, yes, but as I said before, we need to add to this squad this window.

While we want the best for the club as fans, the job of managing the finance and balancing the books are definitely in the management's hands. I doubt they are 'doing a Leeds' and should be aware of their means. We also haven't spent much money (nett) over the previous transfer windows and as mentioned in earlier post, most of our current players + targets are around 25. If these signings do as well as they are expected to, we won't need to splash that much cash in the transfer windows to come.

Also, things balances out too - e.g. Matip was a free transfer, Mane is looking like a bargain at current market rate - probably Firmino too, Solanke if he ever leaves should fetch more than we're going to pay (then there's the Ibe, Smith, Sinclair deals etc. where we obviously made decent gains). Everyone (well, almost) agreed that this is one of the most important transfer window in recent years for us. Btw, when was the last time players wanted to join us thanks to the lure of our manager? I think it makes sense to make the most out of it.

I'm not saying Lemar and Ox will definitely be big successes but it's really not that simple to judge a player just because of his previous performances at ex clubs. If anything, Moses and Alonso showed how managers, style of play and tactics can impact a player's performances.
