Oxlade-Chamberlain

Coutinho will stay one more season and Lemar will be eased in during that season perhaps. Oxlade instead or Origi?

The speculation has been that he wants us because he doesn't like being deployed as a WB at Arsenal and rightly suspects Chelsea will use him as a WB too. But that is literally the only position I'd like him in and with the signing of Robertson and the emergence of Alexander-Arnold it means that the position is not as urgent as it was. To make someone who I can only see as a utility player become a 40m outlay and top earner in our payroll is galling. He would be a good utility signing at 25m on 70g a week. But that isn't happening.

Interesting that The Ox is reportedly not keen on joining Chelsea because he wants to play centrally, rather than RWB, as he suspects Conte will.

Can't second guess Conte, or the veracity of that claim, but I'm not sure Chelsea are that over-stocked with CM players. They've sold Matic, Fabregas is an irregular starter, Hazard is injured and he's already played Luiz in central midfield this season. I don't think he'd struggle to get games centrally there, even if RWB seems perhaps more obvious a requirement for them.

Whether or not he can actually play centrally is another thing. He's always talked about wanting to play there, but it smacks of Theo Walcott's (now abandoned) life-long quest to play as a striker. You might want that, but you're not good enough.

I understand why he would fancy playing for Klopp at Liverpool, not least because he has friends at the club already, and there's plenty of proof about how Klopp can supercharge a player's career. But is he actually that good?

Ox has qualities - pace, strength, and he can take a player on, certainly - but he's a shit finisher and often seems totally fucking brainless in his use of the ball, and he is horribly injury-prone and inconsistent.

I wouldn't be very excited about signing him at all on the available evidence.

At the moment we have no one as cover for mane and salah, who offer the pace of our game.

However paying anything close to 40m for a bench player is just a toxic idea for me

I wouldn't be surprised if the instability at Chelsea is a concern to him. Conte is clearly not going to stick around for the long term and I suspect Chamberlain feels he is at a point in his career where he needs to kick on in terms of ability, which makes Klopp possibly a more attractive coach to play for.

Agree. He would be one of the most underwhelming signings I can remember. And £40 million. Fuck that. Thought he'd gone to Chavs. Please do!

In addition to your points I'd add Milner's example. Came to Liverpool as he wanted to play regularly at CM and what did we do?

That "promise" was made by the manager who signed him, and he played there plenty of times in that first season.

It's totally unacceptable for a player to sign on condition that he is going to be played in a particular position. The manager must have freedom to employ him in any way he thinks will be beneficial.

Chelsea will probably sign Barkley and Drinkwater for central cover. At least they seemingly have made offers for both. I think O-C is right in that he would primarily be cover for the RWB position.

I actually think that Oxlade-Chamberlin is a good player and wouldn't mind him here. As a nice to have - not a must have - and not at the expense of Lemar or Coutinho.

Which is why Can hasn't signed a new contract by all accounts, so it's nigh on impossible to imagine klopp agreeing it to a player new to the club.

Couldn't agree more.

It's a worrying attitude to see in a player, the team comes first. If someone can't abide by that, they are unlikely to be worth the hassle.

Fucking gutted. I had hoped he had signed for the Chavs. Injury prone and 9 goals for arsenal in over 130 games....no thanks.

We do need back-up and depth for the wide players so I'm not against this but not fussed either way really.

It doesn't automatically follow he will sign for us, though. I actually think he'll stay at Arsenal.
He wants to come to us. Apparently he's happy to stay one more season and then come to us on a free next summer. Either way he's still an average player who's not better than what we already have.

£20m +1

I'm not hugely sold on him being a good option in that CM trio, the only real plus is that you'd expect his resale value to go up significantly when he has a longer contract. I'd rather look elsewhere though.

Liverpool have had a £30m bid for Alex Oxlade Chamberlain rejected by Arsenal (Evening Standard)

Look at the Man City Bournemouth game. City had Aguero, Sane and Stones ready to come on from the bench. We are in danger still of under-estimating how much more our squad needs strengthening. If he wants to come to us and there are no promises about when and where he plays, then sure, take him at this stage - we need more options, deffo.

I agree completely regards numbers. I thought we needed a minimum of six additional players in this summer.

However his purported wages demands are 180k a week. We have an absurdly high wage bill already, & if we're talking about bolstering squad numbers those wages could pay for two average players instead of one.
