Why have we got so many? Is there any sign of rationalisation, pecking order taking place?

Personally I'd slim down to 4 + Melwood.

Reina + Cavalieri (1st Team), Bouzanis + Gulacsi or Martin (Ressies)

Yes i definatly agree, far too much for one position.

I often reflect that if we had kept Brad Friedel on our books when we had him, we could have saved all the ups and downs we went through with Sander Westerveld and Jerzy Dudek. Friedel's a top keeper.

We can count out Itandje though. He was essentially replaced by Cavalieri and I don't think there was ever any intention to keep him as third choice or anything. The only reason he is still on the books is because noone has really wanted to take him cos he's shit.

I'm now wondering whether we can also count out Martin. One or two of those younger keepers may well have taken his place as third choice.

I suspect that Benitez has bought all of these hoping that one will be great and eventually provide a cheap replacement for Reina, but is aware that a few won't make the grade. Its a fair enough approach really even if it does look a bit absurd when you list them all.
