Additionally they have signed a top class proven centre back (albiol) to add to the ranks that include Garay, Marcelo, Salgado, Pepe, Ramos, Heinze. They are also trying to sign Arbeloa, which would give them 4 of spains back 5. They signed a top class dm in Lassana Diarra to add to Gago and Mo Diarra, and are also trying to buy Alonso and perhaps Mascherano too.

Most of these trophies were between 2000 and 2003 under Del Bosque. He was finding the right balance. They sacked him and bought Beckham. They should have bought a world class defender instead.

The main reason the first Galatico era went off the rails was because Real held on to certain star players too long and who were becoming too old. They held onto these players because they were still worth a lot for their marketing and brand value rather than what they actually offered on the field, but as their achievements on the field dropped, their marketing value eventually followed too.
