Other games thread 5-7 April 2025

looking at league results is cherry picking imo. It's the same guys on the pitch.
I'll bite... Cherry picking what? These are the results we've produced. And I didn't ignore the two cup defeats in my response.

PSG would have battered any team over two legs, they way they played us - They're a really, really good team. And we were woeful against Newcastle. I think they're both fair comments. Sometimes you lose to a better team, and sometimes you play shite. But, through both of those disappointments, we still picked up more league points than anybody else.

I'm not saying that we're prefect. I'm not saying that we don't need any work in the summer... Of course we do, ideally in several key positions. All I'm saying is that some of the hyperbole and vitriol being thrown around recently is more than a little silly. I just don't understand why some people are (or at least seem) so hell bent on hating every second of this wonderful and highly improbably (and highly likely) title run.

There's not counting your chickens - which I'm completely on board with, by the way - and then there's whatever THIS is...

Yeah, I'm all too happy to say that we've been the best performing team in the league this year. The league table says so. But I'm looking at the trajectory of both teams and the mitigating factors (their injuries vs ours).

If we win the league, I just don't want us to get complacent in the summer (again) and think this team is actually one of the great teams. It's not. Klopps 2019 team was better in nearly every area. We can be better. And while I don't see City immediately coming back into form next season, it means we have a chance to win 2 titles in a row and get to 21. The only team I see up there getting better next season competing with us is Arsenal (that's if we ourselves don't have a big fall off).
Man that's twice you've mentioned Arsenal's injury record. You know and I know that's how football works every team can point to injured players, including us.
Ibou
Allison
Trent
Bradley
Jota
Gomez

It’s not inconceivable that Arsenal go on winning run now and pile serious pressure on us if we don’t get back on track Sunday.

You've been saying the same for the last 2 months almost as if you're wanting it to happen, then they go and lose to West Ham or drew at Everton. Relax fella.

And we've not spent anything like it since.

In the upcoming summer if we signed players of the quality of:

Kerkez 40m
Isak 100m
Cunha/Kudus/Bowen 60m
Frimpong 40m
Huijsen 50m

I think we probably win the league.

But you just know we'll be looking for cheaper alternatives in all positions.
We’ve always spent big when we’ve wanted to do so. Yea we may need big money for Nunez to do it but we will do it.

That's nothing compared to our injuries last season, which put us in good stead for dealing with it this season. I think that's why we fell off last season (as our players came back unfit).

Arsenal have fallen off this season because of their injuries this season. And they're not used to dealing with it.

We're not in a good place at he moment. We beat Everton but we weren't playing well.
I'm just annoyed about the lack of changes from the manager and I'm afraid that this will ultimately lead to us dropping even more points.

So yeah, it's great being 11 points ahead.
But we're also a Chelsea loss, an Arsenal loss, a Brighton loss and a few draws away from throwing it away.

Everton wasn’t great because that’s exactly what Everton do at Anfield. Had the refs done their jobs we would’ve played against 9 men.

We're actually in a WONDERFUL place, mate... We're so far ahead that we can afford to play a bit shit and drop some points and we'll still be multiple games ahead of them. If Arsenal win it from here, it'll surpass Lazarus as the greatest comeback of all time! THAT'S how good a place that we're in.

Like I said, that doesn't take away from our obvious need to strengthen in several key areas, but that's a different topic. And, you're right... If we lose everything from here on out, we'll likely lose the title. But, honestly, if that's what you expect to happen, I think you are simply determined to expect the worst at every possible moment. I truly don't envy you that mindset.

All this shit is of Arsenal get a 9 they’d win it does also apply to us. We’ve had 10 players on the pitch most games because of how shit Nunez and Jota have been.
I agree with you. Arsenal don't win the league with a 9. My point has been (and I don't understand how people disagree), is that we are only as far ahead as we are because Salah is potentially having a record breaking season. Some people are saying that we'd still be winning the league with Salah being less effective, and I'm just not having it. 44 goal involvements is highly likely to be unrepeatable.

Let's say Salah got injured day 1, and we had to rely on gakpo and Diaz as our starting wingers; would we be top? Not a chance in fucking hell.

But we're not a 1 man team apparently.

If we had the best defence I'd agree. If we had the top scorer after Salah I'd agree. If we had the most creative player after Salah I'd agree. But we don't. Not even fucking close. Salah has done the heavy lifting and now seemingly can't be arsed as the inks drying on the contract. Good on him. He's fucking took the piss in output this year. Shite performances but output 2nd to none.

If Salah plays well, we play well. If Salah has output we win.

No one in this entire squad has tried to take up the mantle.

And this is all before i get on to the lack of rotation from slot and motivation killer decisions to just not give players minutes, or to rest others.

I may be mostly doom and gloom, but fuck me I'm being a fucking realist at the moment. Nothing has been won (things have actively been lost in fact).

Without mo I strongly doubt this team is 11 points clear. I even doubt that we'd be clear.

If mo got injured early doors, rather than him not existing, we might see a higher goal output from gakpo and Diaz, but the assists would be a lot less. Meaning we'd probably score less overall. Diaz and gakpo aren't all of a sudden going to become world beaters.

44 goal involvements mo has. Thats insane levels and I've no doubt that's why we're as far ahead as we are. If you believe that others would pick up the slack (when they haven't for months), then fine. But it's wrong
I did not say that at all. In fact I said that we'd likely be still ahead even if it were close. I also didn't say anything about what would happen in the event he was injured. What I did say was if we didn't have Mo. but a CF and winger and the rest of this team.

So no I also didn't say anything about Diaz or Gakpo becoming world beaters. Those are weird tangents you've gone off on.

What most people seem to surmise is that when we take Mo. out of the team we now only have 10 players !

You're going by "if we didn't have mo we'd have 2 new players", whereas I'm going by "if mo got injured would we cope". Obviously if we bought a stronger and a winner to replace no we'd probably be in decent nick. But who's arguing that? That as a hypothetical that doesn't even have names attached. My hypothetical at least goes "hey, if mo got injured, would we struggle? Yes" rather than "hey, if we bought x and y, could they have 44 goal contributions?". Based on our last 3 years of attacking players, no they wouldn't.

If you have faith in fsg to buy players good enough to cover an injury as crucial as mo, then fair enough. I don't and never have.

Jesus fucking Christ. I don't care if we win it by a single point (hyperbolic but you get the point). OPTA 99/2% says your 'serious pressure' comment is a load of bollocks. Will they close the gap? I expect they will. Will they get close enough to get the sphincter puckering? Not for most.

I don't think arsenal go on a winning run, as I think they'll focus on CL. But that shouldn't mean we give our underperforming players a reprieve.

What happened to calling a player a cunt? What happened to my SCM?

Fucking Starmers Britain making the fans go soft

Yeah but you're introducing strawman hypotheticals that you then knock down that had nothing to do with my comment which was based on it all being about Mo. and I said .. if we didn't have him. That's not him being injured. My point was that we have a bloody good team without him (Ali, VvD, TAA early doors, Robbo early doors, Gravy, Macca, Szobo, Jones, Diaz and even Jota pre-injury) that could still have challenged this season (no idea next we'll have to see how the Summer goes).

Anyway this is getting boring now.

Disagree over the rest of the team doing enough if mo wasn't there. Agree it's getting boring.

It's all just perspectives.

DB's sphincter is very sensitive, you know

I don't expect that to happen but I don't see it being smooth sailing either.

With those two wins that we're both expecting, we'd need 5 points from 15, IF the Arse win all of their remaining 7 matches. And I genuinely don't understand why you fear so many teams that are so clearly not as good as we are...
