I'd consider playing N'Gog in that position though, once Torres is fully fit. I think it could suit him better than playing right up the front.
I would rather any of those three than N'Gog but that slot is ear-marked for Cole.

Pacheco's the only one I'd definitely prefer in there. Maxi's needed out wide and the jury's still out on whether Aquilani will make it.

I'm sure the position is earmarked for Cole at the moment but he'll have to play it a lot better than he did today. Even before the sending-off I thought he was far too static.

Yeah he didn't look sharp enough. I thought SG was jaded after the midweek game too.

I just think with the Arse playing a tight 3 in CM, he struggled to find space easily. And when he did, he was closed down quickly or only had Eggnog to find ahead of him.

Egg was awful in the first half, he was caught offside too many times which was criminal when you consider they were playing quite a high backline and there for the ball over the top.

He was excellent in the second half, leading the line really well and holding up play. I think we actually offered him much more support in the second half, whereas the first half seemed to be 45 minutes of sitting back and a reluctance to break forward.

He seemed nervous and jumpy in the first half. He wasn't offside by much but just seemed to jump a split second too early. Which is a shame because Stevie was putting on a passing clinic there for a brief time in the first half.

Really impressed me in the second though. His hustle and chase harried the defenders, showed some good touches, and it was a great finish of course.

Superb finish for the goal, I don't think anybody expected him to really take it on. Almunia certainly didn't. He put in a proper shift too, but like Jon i just don't think he is suited to playing up front on his own.

We suffered a bit in the first half because he was struggling.

He was terrible in the first half (as, admittedly, were most of the team), drifting wide all the time when he should have been in the centre, and totally unable to make the ball stick.

In the second half (I assume after some words of wisdom from the manager) he was much better. And the goal was fucking ace, no matter how bad Almunia was.

He's still capable of those WTF, Momo-like moments (that 'shot' that went 40ft up in the air) but he's definitely growing on me. I trust Hodgson to help him improve a lot this season.
Its the 40 foot shots that go straight up in the air that make me wonder about him.

Emphatic finish. Like I said N'gog will improve.

If Torres has scored a goal like that, everyone would be raving about it.
Exactly.

For £1.5million, he has more than justified the move with his goals. He's only 21 and unless we're getting a huge transfer fee for him, we'll be better off sticking with him and giving him the chance to grow and improve.

We got Barros at a similar price and Benitez sold him for a good profit.

I think same will happen with Ngog. But he is good enough to be in our Squad. We do have Kuyt, Jovanovic and Babel to support him. He is not the one and only backup to Torres. I see that it will be good to have another striker of better quality (when is that not the case?), but at this moment i don't see that as the priority.

We can't stock up on Strikers like City have done and like Newcastle did before they got relegated. If we have to get someone we need to sell someone. I won't mind losing Babel if that's the case. I won't mind if he got a fresh start either.

I'm also eager to find out Roy's ideas for the CAM role. It seems he has earmarked Cole and Aquilani for that role, with Gerrard playing mainly as a CM. I think i'm happy with that.

I only saw the highligst of the game, but he took his goal well and that header in the first half was bound for the goal.

Looks like he has put on a bit of muscle over the summer, and should with his physique make life hell for the defenders. Hopefully he'll just grow in terms of ability and confidence.

As Oncy said, his record this season is very good. He's been involved in all our goals so far.

Just think its strange that Babel it valued at 8-10 million and N'gog is often talked about in the 3-5 million bracket.
Probably more to do with their original fees. Someone offering 3-5 million for babel would be told to get lost because of how much we paid for him, plus he's a dutch international (which often baffles me based on his form for us). Id be happy holding on to n'gog based on his current form but we do desperately need another striker on the books!

I don't think that was a shot, he thought he was offside and then did something random. Even the best can have their moments (mot saying N'Gog is that like). What about SG, he heard "MAN ON!", shits it, swipes and completely misses the ball.

Ngog is actually dead fucking good. He does the stuff you can't learn very well and is learning the stuff you can quite quickly. We'd have been fucked without him so far this season.

n'gog is playing though the middle, put him (ngog) in a wide position and see how well he does.

Babel has played wide his entire career, so that argument doesn't hold water AT ALL.

has he? I thought he was left in a 4-3-3 at ajax, not really the same as being played as wide midfielder

It's not, but wouldn't you say that generally speaking a wide forward should find it easier to transition to the winger role than an out and out striker?

I guess I would. well, anyway, good luck to ngog, I think he will get lots of games because, let's face it torres will be out for half a season.
