NFL Off Season - FAs, Trades, Draft etc

Thomas will have to your first round pick if you want him, he won't be there in the second. And I don't see the Cowboys taking him in the first. More likely an offensive linesman.

Also, I don't think there will be a lockout. Clearly the cap needs to go down, and I think we'll see an 11th hour agreement. The uncapped year lets teams sort their finances out, but nobody wants to shut the league down at the peak of its popularity. That's insanity.

What'll probably happen is Tebow will retire without taking (fumbling) a snap, replace Goodell, and lead everyone to the promised land.

On a side note I hope Colt McCoy ends up playing in the Arena League.

I feel sorry for whoever drafts him.

Colt McCoy is shit. He can't read, he hates pressure, and is going to get mauled. LeFevour, Brown, maybe even Snead and Skelton could go before him. Hell, I'd even have Tony Pike on my bench before McCoy. Of the low rounders, Bill Stull interests me a little bit. He played in a pro-style offence at Pitt. He doesn't have a cannon, but he makes good decisions, and takes hits well.

QBs and WOs working this morning.

Jacoby Ford is doing well. Played somewhat in the shadow of Spiller at Clemson, but is a player in his own right. Also ran NCAA track, and is often called a track-first guy (just ran twice in the four-two range for the 40), but looks to have natural hands. Strolled through the gauntlet without dropping a ball. He's small, but his stock looks to be rising today.

Tebow just went 38 1/2 vertical. Didn't think he was going to work out, but he seems to be doing some of the measurables.

Golden Tate ran an unofficial 4.36 with a stumble. Dude is fast. Someone is going to be happy to get him. Playmaker.

It's his real name. Golden Tate III actually. His old man was with the Colts for a bit.

I like him a lot. Think he'll have good production in the pros.

TO will go ... My guess is he'll end up with a playoff contender this time - perhaps da Broncos or da Bears?

Terrell Owens is on the market after the Buffalo Bills announced Saturday they do not plan to offer him a contract.

The Bills also declined to offer contracts to defensive end Ryan Denney and wide receiver Josh Reed, allowing them to become unrestricted free agents at midnight on March 5.

"We wanted to inform all three players ahead of the start of the free agency period so they could begin making their plans," Bills general manager Buddy Nix said. "We just felt that was the right thing to do. All three have represented our organization with class and we thank them for their dedication and hard work."

Owens, who will turn 37 in December, caught 55 passes for 829 yards and five touchdowns in his only season in Buffalo. He also ran for a touchdown.

Jets look to release Jones after he refuses to restructure contract:

New York Jets running back Thomas Jones will not restructure his contract and will be released this week, sources told ESPN on Saturday.

Jones, who will become a free agent March 5, was slated to receive a $3 million roster bonus March 9 and a $2.8 million base salary in 2010.

Jones, who has played the last three seasons for the Jets, rushed for 1,402 yards and 14 touchdowns on 331 carries last season. The Jets reached the AFC Championship Game.

NFL will change OT? It's a possibility ...

An NFL spokesman said Saturday the league could change its overtime format for playoff games at a meeting next month.

Under the new format, both teams would get the ball at least once unless the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown, Greg Aiello said. If the first team to get the ball makes a field goal and the other team ties the game, action would continue until a team scores again.

Under the current rules, the first team to score wins.

"There have been various concepts that have been discussed in recent years, but this one has never been proposed," Aiello said.

The competition committee will discuss the new concept with teams and players at league meetings March 21-24 in Orlando, Fla., when it could come to a vote. At least two thirds of the teams would need to agree to the changes for new rules to be adopted.

The competition committee met with the players' union and players on Thursday during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. Discussion continued when the competition committee met with a general managers' advisory committee on Friday.

The debate about the rules gained steam after the NFC championship game, when New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 in overtime and Brett Favre's Vikings never got the ball in the extra period. Under the proposed rule, Minnesota would have gotten another possession because the Vikings didn't allow a touchdown.

Overtime was adopted for regular season games in 1974, a sudden-death format that allowed games to end in a tie if neither team scored in 15 minutes. Overtime for playoff games always has been sudden death.

Was looking at the official times from the 40 in the combine, and they're a joke. How hard is it to clock someone running from here to there? The unofficial hand times are always more accurate. Trindon Holliday left the pitch smoking, and some of the scouts said they clocked it at 4.22. His official time came up a few hours later as 4.34. Then Taylor Mays ran a fucking scorcher and the official time is registered at 4.43. Except when the NFL Network overlaid the two runs and simulcast them, Mays beat Holliday. So how the fuck is his official time a tenth slower?

I forget the numbers, but McCoy seemed to do rather shit on the bench press and Suh has increased the gap between the two.

Detroit have spoke to Suh twice. Now get the lad out to dinner please 😉

MC - do you know anything about Jared Veldheer? The Lions are sniffing around him... I read he's 6' 8" but that's all I know. Is he a potential starter and would he still be about in the 3rd round?

He played Division II, so I never saw him play, but Hillsdale went to the playoffs and he was a consensus All-American at that level. Division II guys don't draft often, but I know NFL scouts watched him all through last season. I saw him weighed in at the combine. He's 6'9'' but only has 33'' arms. I'm surprised he can reach his pockets. But then, he is pretty fast for a man his size. There's talk of him going in round 2, but given the level of football he has been playing that must be something from the Al Davis School of Drafting. There are some great tackles in this year's draft, but the class isn't very deep, so I suppose anything is possible. Given his speed and frame, a zone-blocking team might look to him in the second at a reach. Redskins and Giants will be looking for a tackle I would have thought. Second round still seems a bit high for me though, so the Lions might still see him there high in the third.

Shanahan is basically going to need to draft a new signal caller and a new o-line to keep him from being killed. They offered Jason Campbell the minimum tender one year contract, which he's unlikely to sign as Shanahan blatantly isn't interested. Of course, if someone else comes in for him, then the Skins would get that team's first round pick. Is Campbell worth a first round pick? Might be if someone needs a QB and is worried about money. Enter the Rams? They'd have to pay Bradford/Clausen a guaranteed $40m on an $80m contract. Campbell's not going to commands that much, and he's the best free agent QB out there. Shanahan would love the deal as he gets two massively high picks and Dan Snyder would love it as this season is uncapped, so the contracts can be skewed to take advantage of that. Might be worth keeping an eye on.

Panthers cut Jake. Not surprising really. He was shit last year. Matt Moore showed a lot in his 5 games ...

The Carolina Panthers cut Jake Delhomme late Thursday, just over a year after they gave him a lucrative contract extension only to watch him have his worst season as a pro.

Delhomme’s agent, Rick Smith, confirmed the move and said Delhomme would wait until Friday to talk to reporters. It signals the Panthers intend to go with Matt Moore(notes) or someone new at quarterback for the first time since Delhomme burst onto the scene in 2003 and led Carolina to the Super Bowl.

Jets traded for Cromartie ... What a CB tandem they now have if Cromartie can play up to his level. Could be on of the best of all time.

The New York Jets have reached an agreement in principle with the San Diego Chargers to acquire cornerback Antonio Cromartie.

The Jets confirmed the deal Thursday night, but didn’t release specifics— although it is believed to include a draft pick in 2011 going to the Chargers.

My favourite Antonio Cromartie facts - Cromartie has at least seven children with six different women in five states. All children are under 6.

He's just making sure the next generation gets a genetic leg up.

The minute they tendered Moore for 1st and 3rd round picks Delhomme must have known he was done.

Still doesn't beat our Mark1975 (1975 stands for 1 true love, 9 women, 7 kids in 5 countries)

Lions haven't wasted any time...

Corey Williams (does this mean Okung rather than McCoy/Suh?)

Kyle Vanden Bosch (used to be good... albeit no more I assume)

Nate Burleson (I know the name but that's it... can he play out wide as a #2 receiver or not?)

You'd certainly think so, especially with the fifth round pick going.

I'm sure what I'll do if the Lions actually draft the correct person. Cut myself somehow probably.

They seem to have paid over the odds for Burleson. Is he good enough to take some of the pressure off Calvin? It would be nice if he was just double teamed occasionally rather than triple teamed!

Oh, and Peppers has agreed a deal with the Bears.

Burleson knows Linehan from the Vikes, so I imagine they pursued him pretty hard. I don't know about him. He had a 1000 yards at the Vikes, but I don't think he has with the Hawks. People always talk like he's a player ready to happen, but that's been a while now. Still, he might turn out to be an effective wingman, like you say, rather than an out and out gamechanger himself.

Peppers is obviously lovely, but we're paying him so much money I want to set fire to myself. Watch him break his own spine in preseason. Reasonably happy with Chester Taylor (my boy Matt needed some help last season) and the Manumaleuna deal suggests we're looking to offload Davis. Or possibly Olsen as he'd probably be worth more, but he can block whereas Davis can't hold a broom up. But if Manumaleuna is blocking at TE and we start Hester in the slot (which I think Martz will do), then I don't see Olsen being on the grass a whole lot. I don;t know what kind of pick we could get for him, but anything's better than the fuck all we have now.

I think the bears will improve, and cutler is still gonna be very good but you need some more experience maybe at wideout. It'll be a tough division with three teams who can all finish above .500 methinks.

Is urlacher gonna be the same when he comes back?

I see Orlando Pace has gone... Could that be the end?

The first time I heard of him I misread it and thought it was an expansion team called the Orlando Pace 🙂
