The Greek international defender ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament against Luxembourg on Wednesday and is likely to be out until 2010.....
Oct 14, 2009 11:22:52 PM

Sotiris Kyrgiakos suffered the injury five minutes before the end of the first-half in Greece's World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg which they won 2-1 to book their place in the playoffs.

The 30-year-old collided with a Luxembourg player and Goal.com Greece have learned that the central defender ruptured his anterior cruiciate ligament. He was visibly hurt after the challenge but brought himself up on his feet and did not have to be taken out on stretchers.

The Liverpool centre-back is likely to be out for at least four months, although more concrete news would emerge only on Thursday morning.

Kyrgiakos's injury would not certainly be welcomed by Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez or by the Greek national side, who shall now have to play their World Cup playoffs next month without the influential defender.

Rupturing your ACL is pretty much the worst injury you can get as a professional footballer. He's gonna be out of the game for quite some time, effectively that's a season ender, and even when he does come back - he's likely to be even slower than he is now.

I'd be extremely surprised if we ever see this lad play more than a handful of games for us again.

Benitez clearly doesn't rate him highly enough to displace our CB's no matter what the circumstances. Between Carragher, Agger and Skrtel we should be alright, although clearly that's dependant on a lot of things.

I almost wish we would miss him more, TBH, although I don't think he's deserved the "shite" tag just yet.

we should never have bought him.

4th choice centre back - promote a kid, especially as they were getting better every time they played.

i doubt we will see this lad play for us again this season

Rafael need to sign someone in January. Get Chiellini in.

With what money? And to start and make Skrtel and Agger back ups? Or replace Carra?

Chiellini would be a perfect signing for our defense, didn't he also play as left back earlier? He would cost a fortune though so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Lol.

Truly funny when one of our players is injured, innit?

Some fan you are.

I agree, he was in the late autumn of his career, and this will probably finish him , at a decent level anyway.
Although, and correct me if I am wrong chaps, an anterior is not as bad a posterior cruciate.

I don't think many of us thought it a wise buy anyway, although he did show he was actually quite useful especially in the air.

regards

Well, that's his Liverpool career finished before it started. Poor lad - seemed pretty excited to be here as well.

I wonder if the AEK fans are sniggering.

Bad news for the big lad. Hopefully he'll recover well, I thought he looked very decent against Leeds.

On a more positive note Agger has now played 2 x 90 minutes for Denmark within 4 days, and especially in his outing last night he looked amazingly fit. He was litterally playing as a forward for the last 15 minutes and he was bombing forward throughout the whole match.

He looks hungry.

Did he do his signature "I'm-gonna-shoo..-NA!--I'm-still-going" dribble?
Haha.. yes he did.

He had one run in particular where he ended up in the opponents penaltyarea before beeing finally tackled. The crowd cried shoot at least three times during that run before it ended up in nothing. He made amends with two 40-yards screamers in the second half mind, where one were brilliantly saved by a full-stretched keeper.

He is a very clean hit of the football.

I miss him. Did he ever have a proper run in the team since that Porto game?

And his defending?
Abysmal.

Nah, not really. He showed some good awareness and looked composed but truth to be said Hungary had about only one real opportunity (their goal) and Agger wasn't to blame. The game had the look of a friendly at times to be honest.

Against Sweden he looked very assured defensively limiting Zlatan to only a couple of half chances.

The main positive thing from last night in my opinion was that he looked lively and fit throughout the 90 minutes.
