I don't know what more Phillips has to do to win a CB squad place next season. Up against Benzema, Ascensio, and Vini Jr etc. he performed extremely well, I can only think of one instance when he needed helping out and one pass that went astray. In fact his odd forays forward and neat 15-20m passing to Trent etc. on our right were useful in breaking their forward press.
His power and skill in the air is a more useful asset to have in the PL than pace (the only thing he really lacks) and alongside VvD or Gomez even that shouldn't be an issue. He has proved he deserves a place in the squad and would be very useful in certain matches, as back-up to rest or cover for injured players and in the Cups. I'm sure he would be delighted to stay even as a squad player.

He's done enough to prove he's a premier league calibre defender. My only issue is he's not quick enough to play that high press that klopp wants, and klopp seems unwilling to bend his tactics.

Unfortunately he offers nothing in attacking corners either, but neither does Gomez.

Too many times this season, I'd been dreading the game Nat would be exposed for the championship level defender everyone kept saying he was. I needn't have bothered. He's a fine fine player. Even his fouls were sensible tonight.

That’s a bit harsh on Gomez as he seems to be the defender left back on corners due to his pace.

He was amazing again last night.

people go on about his heading. His passing out from the back is just as good. A few times when it looked like he was going to get caught - instead of thumping it up the field - he found a cheeky little ball into the midfield.

He’s the real deal. I think he’d look really good along side Virgil. I mean most would, but ja.

Also loved it early on when he went through 3 Real players, including Benzema

He's boss. His passing last night was superb, lots of clever through balls into midfield and Trent. Cult players are ones everyone knows are a bit shit but have a few boss outings in big games, this lad is just a really good and likeable player. Its a fairytale journey worthy of cult status, but it begs the question why he wasn't given opportunities sooner.

I hope he stays, or at least gets a reasonably big move, he deserves it.

So how much it he worth when we sell him to Newcastle in the summer?

Klopp wants his CBs playing 5 yards inside the half way line. That's never going to be Phillips game, he's going to be sold.

Jose Enrique:
[article]Liverpool should keep Nat Phillips rather than spending £18m on Ozan Kabak, saving money for other areas

If both Phillips and Kabak were free this summer, I’d still go for Phillips. But with Phillips already ours and Kabak costing £18m, I definitely choose Nat. Next season, my four defenders would be Van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Phillips. If Matip is sold, I’d bring in a new centre-back, but Phillips won’t cost us anything and has proven himself.

Phillips is strong and amazing in the air. Kabak would be better for a possession team, a Barcelona, but in the Premier League, with all the long-balls, I prefer Phillips for our style. I think next to van Dijk, Gomez or Matip, he could do the job. He’s still quite young and is getting better and better. He deserves an opportunity next season – that means money can be spent elsewhere. Obviously if we had £300m we could just bring in Kalidou Koulibaly or whoever, but Liverpool will have to be smart this summer. Klopp likes tall centre-backs who are quick. Phillips isn’t quick, but he’s big and a brilliant header.

I don’t think Klopp watched much of Ben Davies before he arrived. I can tell you from being a player that managers only have time to focus on players in their own league. Klopp won’t be watching Championship games, so he would have relied on his scouts. The fact he hasn’t played means I can’t judge him, but there is obviously a reason why he – and Kostas Tsimikas – are not playing.[/article]

I like this point of view and to be frank, I love players who strive to improve and show improvements if trusted e.g. Hendo, Robbo ... I wuold be devastated if club decides to offload him. We want guys with heart on their sleeves to be in squad all the time. Not only that, the quality and potential is there ... it just need to be honed and Klopp's team is the best with this.

Look at these clowns:

such a shame we are out of the CL - would have been nice to see how well both would have done with Fab in midfield against remaining opponents. Anyway - love to keep them both - so far as a partnership from the start of a game we are looking at played what played 6, won 4, 1 draw, 1 loss, and in total 4 goals conceded. Both the loss/draw are against Real Madrid, but more importantly they have won all PL games in which they have started together.

Might as well let Matip leave and make an effort to keep Nat! I love Matip but its getting to the point that if he plays 10 games a season its classed as a mission successful!

Why are countless brilliant displays where he gets to everything can I not see him a great CB.

Arguably our player of the season.

It looked to me like it was at least hitting the inside of the post. I dont blame him for trying to deal with it.

To be fair, early jitters were started with Becker fucking around at the back. He blasted Phillips for the goal, but he was a whisker away from the gaff which started it all.

Philips' attitude to come back from the mistake was immense.

Klopp can’t help but see a bit of himself in big Nat. Technically not great, medium paced at best, but a huge heart and clearly willing to learn. Excellent option as 4th choice CB in this squad you’d think

If we have a most improved award it definitely belongs to Philips.
Premier League teams will be testing our resolve this summer.
He looks more agile and more comfortable with the ball. Even his passing has improved.
I don't think he's finished yet.
