Nat Baresi

Nat is our second best defender. The man is made of steel ( I hope I don't regret saying that). That tackle by De Bailly would have left Gomez and Matip out for weeks.

It's a similar thing with Wijnaldum that they can be less good but so impressive at being able to be on the pitch and performing every week that it makes them more reliable than a superstar injury prone player.

I'm done with relying on Gomez and Matip

Putting Gomez and Matip together there isn’t 100% fair. Joe has essentially had 3 big injuries (cruciate ligaments, leg break, knee) whereas Matip has had a long long long succession of niggles and knocks.

Yeah I hear that, but I still think neither can be relied upon in that sense

No wonder we are signing Mbappe

Guys, I have to say I love this guy, and I honestly dont think he has done much wrong since playing for us, especially with Fab in front doing the shielding work. I dont think the guy will actually lose form, he is so consistent and focussed that I think he is a much bigger bet than Gomez or Matip in terms of what can be expected of him consistently.

Also would it not be nice if for fucking once we actually had a large enough squad to compete in the domestic cups as well as PL and CL?

I can't understand anyone wanting to move him on. When you consider the circumstances; first games for LFC, playing under pressure, not playing alongside an established CB, hardly putting a foot wrong (even the OG he had to go for, just bad luck) how can anyone expect to buy another CB who could have performed better?

And then next season alongside VvD? He's #2 on my list for most PL games (aerial prowess - him and VvD together would nullify most teams' aerial threat) and for games where pace is required we have Gomez and it seems Konate (fastest player in the RBL squad)?

I find it completely illogical to expect to find somewhere who would perform better in the PL.

I doubt there are many left now who would move him on. I'm not sure that he'll be second choice for a majority of the games, but I can certainly see him getting his fair share of them.

I am not sure if people are actively advocating that he be moved on but with the likelihood of another centre half coming in, I reckon his playing time could be limited next season and a move might serve him and his career better.
I think he has exceeded everyone's expectations and hopefully he will receive the acclaim from the Kop tomorrow that he deserves.

Debatable. I still think Gomez and Matip are better defenders and partners for VVD, but I do think he is our second best CB leader. That is the part that has impressed me the most over the past few months. He has really grown into that role.

So, I would keep him as the primary back-up to VVD. I will say that his forward passing is starting to surpass Gomez, but Gomez's speed is still a huge asset. But, Nat and Gomez would make a good pair, when fit.

I would definitely keep him, save Kabak money, with Fabs, one of the youngsters or Davies being the 5th, when needed.

Most people who are saying he should move on, myself included, are looking at the way Klopp wants to set up his defence when he has a full team available. Klopp wants quick players who can play a high line and pass the ball out from the back. That's just not Phillips, doesn't mean he can't be a decent PL player but Klopp isn't likely to change his entire defensive strategy just to accommodate Nat. If we sign Konate then Phillips would be 4th or 5th choice, in those circumstances cashing in now while his value is high makes sense.

Otherwise we risk another Origi situation where a player goes to shit by sitting on the bench their value plummets and nobody wants to take them off you.

Some good points there but we need a decent 4th choice IMO, or even a 5th if either Gomez or Matip (esp.if both) stay on.

Gomez and Matip are both made out of Pringles, we need Nat cos he's nails.

Something I heard today is that James Ward Prowse has played in the last 94 matches. I think he's boss anyway, but that kinda thing is so important in a player.

Ward Prowse is decent and that durability mark is impressive. But Saints are never in Europe. Easier to be available when you've all week to recover.

How many midfielders can claim to have done the same ?

Agreed. Being consistently available for selection is one of the most important qualities in a player. Particularly for a manager like Klopp, who relies on constant drills and practice. While I am not a fan of Gini's performance this season, I am sad he is leaving. One of the few players immune to what our medical and physical conditioning team is doing.

Anyways, would love for us to sign Ward-Prowse to replace Gini. Can press, good quality on the ball, not injured that much. Very effective at set-pieces. Would add to our goal threat from midfield - 8 goals and 7 assists this season. I think I read somewhere that he has the best free-kick conversion rate among all players who have taken more than 50 free kicks in the premier league since 2003. Him and TAA standing near free kick can keep the opposition guessing and further confuse their defense.

The only problem is he has 4 years left on his deal and Southampton would ask for a lot of money. Anyways, for 50-60 million, he would be perfect for us.

He has a physically less demanding role than Ward Prowse though. Continuously point at random spots in the pitch, scream aggressively and fall down at the slightest touch, take penalties, and continuously protest at referees. He uses his vocal cords more than his legs.

Wow you are seriously underestimating the efforts of stuntmen and action flick extras everywhere.

100% this. I am not all that in for Konate being a starter anyway.

Sure, but it's different to do it at the highest level and with with extra match each week.

Not really a different question to seeing a striker bang them in for fun in a lesser league and wondering if it will translate to the Premier League.

I like Ward Prowse quite a bit actually, fwiw.
