Reds make £20million move for Lavezzi Written by Max Munton on June 8th, 2009

Liverpool have made a £20million offer for Napoli’s Agentine striker Ezequiel Lavezzi, according to the player’s agent.

The 24-year-old has been strongly tipped to leave the Serie A club after writing an open letter to the fans last week saying he had been treated with disrespect by club officials over his contract.

The Reds are thought to be in a race with Manchester City to sign Lavezzi, with his agent, Eduardo Rossetto, today confirming, “There is a definite proposal from Liverpool.

“The one thing I can say, that so far I have kept confidential, is that Pierpaolo Marino met twice with the FIFA agent Pablo Cosentino, who invited him to set a meeting in either Liverpool or Naples with the British club.â€

Speaking to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Rossetto added that no official communication has been made between his player and Liverpool yet as they await Napoli’s decision on the offer.

[/quote]

well at least that's the right way to do things.

is this guy any good. does any watch the italian league? zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
let's hope our latest signing from italy is better than our last signing from italy.

Hmm so can he play left side? Is he quick? Is he skillful? Does he score many goals? I really hope Rafa gets this right if the rumoured bid is true.

Just watched a youtube comp. Bearing in mind how misleading they can be, I have to say he looks pretty exciting. Fast, tough-looking, likes dribbling, crosses with either foot, shoots with either foot, plays on either flank, and seems very composed in front of goal (though obv they don't show the misses and his goalscoring record in Italy is only about 1 in 4).

I think, if we really have bid for this guy, I might be willing to forget all the crap his agent has come out with in this thread, and actually be quite excited.

He looks lightning quick in the compilations, which is good. The main things I don't like though is that he seems to be a bit of a head down merchant and it's hard to guage how good his close control is. His style of dribbling seems to be more like SWP's (bumbling past players somehow) than Messi's.

Head down? Yeah, maybe. Those crosses were generally pretty good though.

Comparing his close control to Messi's is a bit unfair - who wouldn't look shit in that comparison?

It was more a comment on style than quality - Ribery, Iniesta and Hleb for example have very good close control.

Given that we need attackers who can operate and excel in tight spaces, I always find compilations that promote that sort of ability more exciting. His did feature some of that but at times it looked as though he wasn't in full control of what he was doing.

I can't recall ever seeing the guy play though, so I may be way way off base.

I agree with keni, he doesn't seem to have the ball under control when he runs at players.
and before anyone mentions babel, babel didn't cost 20 million quid.

doesn't look all that and 20 million is a huge gamble for an italian.

i'd rather we chased augero instead of risking 20 million on a maybe player.

he reminds me of a cross between baros and babel

He's a striker.. so i'm not that concerned with his dribbling style.. Nando hasn't got best close control, nor dribbling style, but he's effective..

This Lavezzi looks a bit more like Tevez (head down but kind of knows what he's doing) than say a Baros (headless chicken than runs down blind alleys).. but it is youtube, so one can't be sure.

He does look quite exciting though. When you're his size, you have to have pace to run away from people in England, and the guy looks lightning. Plus, I always appreciate players with a bit of skill/flair. My only concern, again, is if we are buying him to cover Gerrard/Torres and partial cover for LW/RW.. then that's all well and good, so long as we have enough cash to actually get a LW (even if it's D.Silva). But if we're buying him to throw on the left wing (not his best position) then we're, again, playing russian roulette with big, big money and i doubt it'll work out.
For me, it's all about whether Rafa has a clear position for him in our team, or whether we are buying another Babel (a player with all the tools, but doesn't suit our formation nor tactics).

ordinarely I wouldn't give a shit about a striker's ability to keep the ball under control but you'd have to assume he will be spending a fair amount of time in a wide area so the ability to go past players is key.

LIVERPOOL have a new striker target – Lazio’s Goran Pandev.

Kop boss Rafa Benitez is determined to boost his squad despite the club’s financial problems.

The Macedonian, 25, is valued at £15million but will be out of contract in a year’s time.

Chelsea and Tottenham are among the other interested clubs.

Most of that video, he's in the San Lorenzo kit.. where he may have played LW/RW.. it seems so looking at his starting position. However, at Napoli, he plays a mainly as a second striker and the one game i watched him in recently, he was allowed a free role to drift left or right.

It's like I said, it's all well and good buying him, (and as strange as it sounds) rotating him around the 4 attacking positions (United have Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo and Berbatov).. we too, need quality players to rotate to add to Stevie and Nando.
What i'm not so keen about is buying this fella to stick on the left wing and hoping he'll solve all our problems. Whilst i've reservations over his suitablity to this league, there's no denying that Silva can operate on the LW. I'd be more than happy if we bought both he and Lavezzi this summer (as it would mean adding the pace and directness of Lavezzi, with the passing/creativity of Silva.. would seem more of a balance), and which might actually give us 4 players comparable with United's 4 (Roo-Gerr, Tev-Lav, Ron-Torres, Berb-Silva).
