I don't think we can dismiss the European home grown quota issue lightly.
Staunton was a decent player, not a great one, but at the time so was Burrows. I think on balance there was probably little to chose between the two at the time, Burrows was probably more of a defender, and Souness made a call based on that. The reality was that Staunton went on to develop in to a better all round player then the enthusiastic Bugsy Burrows

That's why I called it a mistake.
Fucking Stig Inge Bjornebye....

Indeed. It was a real headache at the time. We could only use 4 non-English players and we had Grobbelaar, Nicol, Molby, Rush, Saunders, Houghton and Whelan - all of whom would have been first choice if fit.

The Kop's song to Villa was to the tune from the Cadbury's Roses advert.

Thank you very much for buying Staunton, thank you verry much, thank you very very much....

His form had disappeared down the toilet and we got 1.1M for him.

Letting Beardsley go was the real crime.

Sounds like another case of one of those players who seems better than he was just because his replacement(s) were shit.

Which sums up Souness's transfer dealings in the main part actually

Yes I believe it was.

I know the rule changed a few times after that season but at that time it was incredibly harsh

Looking back on it yes it certainly was, but on paper even that could kinda be justified - though as Beardsley was English the justification is not as strong as the Staunton sale.

When Souness arrived he had a squad with 2 strikers over 30 so probably thought it was worth getting rid of one of them. Selling Rush wouldn't have been an option so that would leave Beardsley.

If Saunders had been more of a success and Rush not been injured for most of the 91/92 season then it wouldn't have seemed such a bad decision (regardless of the fact that Beardsley continued to be a great player for years to come!).

Ditto. Superb player who makes the subs bench for my version of the All-Time XI and should have finished his career with us.
