Must see interview with Souness about Liverpool

That's an upstanding interview from a man who, whatever his faults as a manager, has never hidden from blame for them. He offered to walk twice while he was in charge. The first time David Moores persuaded him not to go (prompting at least one resignation from the board in protest), then the second time nobody stood in his way.

BTW, @Modo in particular, our problems were never just Souness' fault. His appointment and time in charge were symptomatic of deeper problems which went well beyond him and which we're only now really starting to address. The man was one of our greatest players ever and would still be skipper in my version of our All-Time XI.

really interesting interview, takes balls to admit to mistakes. Can anyone remind me of the players he let go to early (beardsley was one, yes?)

rest easy graham you are no longer the worst manager in liverpool's history, that glittering accolade belongs to hodgson.

Have nothing against Souness as a player. One of the best we've ever had.
Regarding his stint as manager, I can only tell you my opinion about the things I did see happening.
Which was, selling our top players to quickly which he admittedly did. Buying dross to replace them.
Basically he imposed himself on the team to quickly, it should have been done gradually.
Maybe it was the love for the club?
Even when Benitez joined he didn't make any real changes to the tea

And why would he? From what I've heard we had the best tea ladies in the whole league.

There was a few minutes when I watched that this morning where I didn't want to get him in a headlock and smash his face in.

x2

I'd like to add a short personal story - I went to Liverpool in 1993 hoping to watch a few games. One of those games was at Blackburn who had Ewood park rebuilt at the time which meant hardly any tickets allocated to the away fans and no ticket for me. I was advised to go to Melwood and try talking to the players for tickets. I did go but had no success, until I managed to talk to Souness - he gave me a complementary ticket for the executive box. So on top of him being one of my idols as a player I also found out that he was a kind, generous person too. I'll always have a warm corner in my heart for Graeme Souness.

If the Internets was around, some of the lads on here would have fixed you up for tix.

As for Souness, it's hard to be angry at probably our 3rd best ever player who's done so much for us; in the end he tried to do too many things and failed. It's nice to see some regret for the mistakes he's made, but if I'm being honest, he's a bit easy on himself.

He talks about how he failed to replace players properly, but claims that he did so because he had too quickly bombed out players who wanted to leave..I very much doubt Beardo and Staunton were thinking about big paydays when they left.

But well, all managers make mistakes...the newspaper was the biggest one though.

Yep. Pete did help me last time I was in Liverpool. That particular game was a tough one as I think the allocation was only a few hundred tickets.
Anyway, you have to admit that a complementary ticket from the manager himself is something special!

You are having an absolute shocker ace - first the drivel about Barton, and now highlighting the sale of Staunton as a seminal moment?

What the fuck are you talking about?!?! The whole of Anfield used to sing a thankyou song to Villa for buying him...

Yes. The only thing Staunton had going for him was that he was young, but to be fair to Souness, we had just got back into Europe and in those days both Staunton and Gillespie would have counted as foreign players.

Selling Beardsley was a big big mistake but I believe McMahon wanted to go, as did Houghton by then, it really was not working out with Saunders and Ablett was shit (and we had Rob Jones by then anyway).

Souness made mistakes, but he did some good as well. He brought a lot of young players through when he was manager. Generally injuries forced him to do so but even when the senior players were fit again he tended to keep faith with the youngsters.

Erm, no you got this one wrong.
Staunton was like 20 years old when he was sold. One of our most promising players. Souness thought Burrows was better and let Staunton got to Villa where he played the best football of his career. What happened to Burrows? Gone a year later.

Or maybe, as I said before, he didn't think there was a lot to choose between Burrows and Staunton but Burrows came out on top because he was English and could play in the UEFA Cup - Staunton would probably not have been able to

Doesn't matter. I can't excuse that he sold Staunton just because he couldnt play in Europe.
We lost a young promising left back. That went on to become twice the player Burrows was.

Not even close to being wrong my confused swedish friend.

You need to catch up on reality a little bit more, rather than relying on DVDs and heresay - the WHOLE ground used to sing "thank you very much for buying Staunton" to the tune that was being used on an advert for a well known chocolate brand.

He may have been young, but he wasnt rated. That he may have been better than Burrows isnt even relevant.

Bearing in mind that in those days clubs didn't tend to have huge squads either what would you have done instead?

As you say Staunton was young and considered quite promising, but we needed money to rebuild the squad and also, crucially, to redevelop Anfield - we still had a standing in those days.

Not only did we get decent money for Staunton but also the money from European football would have helped a lot. We had to lose foreign players. As it was we used to struggle to stay within those rules in Europe that season.

OK, I'm gonna try again.
Does it matter what the crowd sang?
Since when does the Anfield crowd decide who stays and who leaves?

Souness might have thought he did the right thing but ultimately it was a mistake because that player went on to become a really good player for Villa.

I was personally very confused as to why we sold Staunton, but it was par for the course at the time.

I don't remember it being a popular decision to let him go. Everyone liked him...

I don't think we can dismiss the European home grown quota issue lightly.
Staunton was a decent player, not a great one, but at the time so was Burrows. I think on balance there was probably little to chose between the two at the time, Burrows was probably more of a defender, and Souness made a call based on that. The reality was that Staunton went on to develop in to a better all round player then the enthusiastic Bugsy Burrows
