Mohamed Salah Link 2017

Haven't watched enough of him regularly either mind, but his form for Roma these last two seasons have been fantastic.

I'm sure it has been. I'm just worried about what it'll be like in the Premier League. In another season, with a better existing squad, I'd sit back and be happy to think of trying him. But for me this summer needs to be focused ruthlessly on getting great competitors in who'll improve the team without any real doubt. We've got the money to do that, probably for the only time in a while. If he turns out to be that player, absolutely wonderful, I'll be delighted. But I'm doubtful, that's all.

Do you think Klopp might switch Mane over to the left if we sign Salah. Inverted wingers in a 4-3-3 works pretty well, and it gives us several options obviously.
Signing a new left back, who is naturally left footed should give us more width as well.
Will we still stick to 433 next season? I don't see how if we are looking to move coutinho into a deeper role. There's no way he can have lallana and coutinho in a midfield 3.

I agree with needing a couple of fairly serious competitors in the side - guys that hate losing.

I have no idea who they are though.

It's quite an ask to find players like that who will come in and have a transformative effect on the team.

Sanchez and Suarez do come to mind as the players who would be perfect for our needs. Unfortunately such acquisitions are merely pipe-dreams. I have Salah reservations. Keita is somebody I am more excited about.

It's a HUGE ask. But we've got a supposedly unprecedentedly big budget, we've got a manager with quite a lot of authority at this stage, and we're in the Champions League (hopefully). If ever there's a summer when we're going to transcend FSG's youth/up and coming talent policy and bring in two or three genuinely top class players who will expect to boss the place, it's surely now. This summer could decide if we're facing another decade of yo-yo form and also-ran campaigns, or finally breaking through as consistent and genuine contenders on all fronts. And our recent finals and semi finals have surely taught us we just HAVE to find not only really top players but authentic winners. If we were City or Chelski or the mancs in terms of funding, I'd snap this player up quite happily and unhesitatingly. But this is crunch time. Every million of that budget needs to improve our team. I'm not saying he won't, I'm just not sure, and I haven't seen enough to make me confident enough. Klopp obviously has, so good.

Turan is one of those players, apparently Arsenal are in for him as the new manager at Barca wants to let him go.

Mohamed Salah agrees £90,000 a week Liverpool contract as negotiations with Roma continue, writes @_pauljoyce

Think this will get done now. According to Joyce, Roma want 35 mill £.

I don't know if he is the right player or not but if he is Klopp's preferred target and he has agreed terms and is willing to come, we had better close this. Move fast and get it done. I don't think we should write blank cheques but we had best not dick around over a couple million.

What makes you think he's one of those players?

I thought it was widely reported one of the reasons he was keen to leave Athletico was that he'd tired of the intensity of Simeone's system.

Fair enough, although I had the same impression as Ryan from watching him recently. To put the question the other way round, is there evidence of him dominating, or at least generally impressing, in a high pressure game? Because my great concern, here and now, is that we just don't have enough players who'll stand up and take back control when things are going wrong. We've plenty of players who can look very good when the team is looking good, but who crumble in a crisis. I'm really keen for us to recruit not just very good players but very good, strong characters this summer. Because this team as it stands isn't going to strengthen a new player - the new player needs to strengthen it.

Yeah, I know what you're asking – again, I don't know the answer. He did dominate the 2-legged EL time vs Chelsea when he was at Basel, that's when I first noticed him. But that's also not an indication of anything, because he had a power of surprise on his side then – it's much harder to deliver when the teams prepare a plan to neutralize you (like they always do against Coutinho in our games). His record against Italy's top teams (league and cup) is quite respectable for a winger:

vs Juve 7 games, 2 goals, 1 assist
vs Lazio 6 games, 2 goals, 0 assists
vs Napoli 5 games, 1 goal, 2 assists
vs Inter 5 games, 1 goal, 0 assists
vs AC Milan 3 games, 1 goal, 2 assists

My working assumption with him is that no, he's not the player who will generally dominate games by himself and find an extra level when the rest of the team is not clicking – he's not a Gerrard or Suarez. However he would give our team badly needed tools such as speed and goals, which can improve our overall balance and make it less dependent on Mane (with January of 2019 excluded). In other words, my expectation for him is similar to what I had for Mane a year ago – I think Sadio has exceeded that expectation somewhat and I hope Salah, who is still quite young at 24 and obviously highly ambitious, can succeed in a similar way. I think a player with Salah's qualities and versatility can be a powerful weapon in the hands of a manager like Klopp.

Here he is making Koulibaly's day rather difficult:

Well, that sounds great, but you could make an argument that over the years we have relied too much on big characters like Gerrard and Suarez, which papered over the cracks of flawed teams. Through sheer force of will they brought us close to the promised land, but it all crumbled near the final step. League titles (as opposed to cup competitions) are won more often by squad depth and consistency than a great individual effort; the ability not to crumble in a crisis is less important if you are able to outplay most teams in the league.

This is all not to say that I think character isn't important, of course – but I think what we lacked the most last year was quality and depth. So while I would love to sign the next Gerrard or Suarez, my perspective on this is that we need to increase the number and variety of tools we can use to break teams down consistently, rather than wait for the next "savior."

That Napoli vid is particularly enlightening. Very impressive.

With that hair and beard is he reminding anyone else of Pennant?

Good clip against Napoli.

Great post. From what I've seen he's a perfect Klopp player. He provides the incredible pace that we lack whenever Mane isn't on the pitch, he is a great presser, and combines very intelligently with other attacking players. His ball control is sublime. The AFCON thing is the only fly in the ointment. Otherwise he looks perfect for us.

Most chances created inside the penalty area in Europe's top 5 leagues last season

Suárez [29]

Neymar, Hazard [28]
Salah [27]

That video of him running looks surreal
He's ridiculously fast
It's depressing that Owen, Torres and Sturridge have changed my potential and understandable excitement about a rapid play, to that of a cynical "he's one injury away from losing his main asset"

Definitely gets into threatening positions often.

From his debut half-season in 13/14

Yeh I can still picture Owen bearing down on goal at full pelt, only to grab the back of his leg.

People on here throughout the seaason went on about needing more pace in our squad, now we've gone after one of the quickest players in the game who also scores goal and is a good player and people are complaining. Unbelievable. I'd be ecstatic if we signed him, been one of Roma's best players
