He's just the kind of inconsistent, unreliable and over-priced player that we've squandered money on in the past that could have been used to get one truly top class player who'd be more or less guaranteed to improve the team week in week out. Maybe he'll confound expectations and blossom here, but we've hoped that before.

I don't know. I'm not sure it's my job to know. I can simply refer to the information and data I have available to know that we should buy one.

Of course it's not your job to know. I was just asking for your opinion on a discussion board. And you don't have a view on who, and that is obviously fine.

I just think we either go all in and spend a massive great whack on a player that will fit in the system, or we don't bother at all.

His stats don't suggest he has been inconsistent or unreliable since he went to Italy. He has been one of the most productive players in the league.

To be fair macca, he's been reliable and consistent in Italy for two seasons now.

All the naysayers have regularly watched him as he's bagged plenty of goals and assists in recent seasons ? Consistency certainly doesn't seem to be an issue, I've. It seen enough to say if he's one to go missing on the big occasions but his end results over a course of a season certainly seem to suggest he's got the ability .

I'd imagine the rest is what Klopp is here to fix/improve..

I find the way he runs endearing. He always looks like his lungs are about to burst.

You can say he's just using his speed but it's well-timed and he does have control over his body. Most players would fall over or trip if they were bursting at that speed all the time. He seems a rather clever player too.

I would be very happy with this signing. £30M is a good price too, in today's market, for a proven quality attacking player entering his prime years. I understand why some people might prefer Lucas Moura or Douglas Costa, but his stats are better than either of them. The attacking trio of Mane, Firmino and Salah has a potential to be very good. The only problem is the fucking AfCon...

Come on, you and your mate Kelvin need to take it if you dish it out. Alternatively you could just shut the fuck up and mind your own business. Wow.

It's a great way to start the window as not only is it a decent signing, but it signals intent and shows other potential signings that we mean business and have the funds to compete.

I think people are struggling to see that the Salah today is a very different player from the prospect coming through at Basel. My recollection of him from then was that he was a speedy winger who liked to run at people.

The Salah today is a proper wing-forward, who spends less time running at people, and more in trying to get into the box and score. In other words, he's intelligent and clinical. His 1v1 finishing is absolutely superb.

I guess that is one of the reasons I am not really excited by his youtube video compilations. No mad skillz on display.

Do you think his style of play will be effective against packed defenses? Will he have the space to arrive late in the box and score?[/QUOTE]

Stats are encouraging but what is he like game to game. I think we're tempted to believe he can reproduce the same stats and whilst i'ts better he has good stats, as opposed to having shit ones, does his actual ability mean he'll be able to transfer them over here? That they are suited to this league? I've seen a lot of his goals and most appear to be tap ins, or curled finishes when he has a bit of space on the counter. I haven't seen many of his goals that suggests he's a player to break down a compact defence. Nor have I seen any of highlights that suggests that he can donimate a full back 1 v 1 with trickery, nor have I seen any assists where I think he's played a blinding pass. I think this is what we need. A Sanchez-type signing. A player who can dribble, run in behind and make a pass (one aspect I think Mane lacks).

Mind you, I have never seen him play over 90 minutes. Perhaps you can help alleviate my worries with this transfer Rurik.

Do you think Klopp might switch Mane over to the left if we sign Salah. Inverted wingers in a 4-3-3 works pretty well, and it gives us several options obviously.
Signing a new left back, who is naturally left footed should give us more width as well.

Well, for me he's not on the same level as Sanchez – unfortunately there are simply no Sanchez quality players that are available and affordable to us. By all accounts our top targets in this position have been Brandt and Pulisic – both also not at the Sanchez level, but with potential to some day get there. Both of those players don't want to leave Germany at the moment (although let's see if Pulisic changes his mind after Tuchel's firing) and Salah is apparently the next name of the list identified by Klopp and the scouting team.

So what kind of player is he? In short I could say he's a pest – lots of energy coupled with speed and guile means uncomfortable evenings for many an opposition full-back. Just the threat of his runs in behind will force the opposition to adjust their tactics and when he does break away, he usually can find a sharp finish or a pass. He is genuinely two-footed and he's played on the left and even in the middle (as a secondary striker or even a centre-forward) for Roma and Basel, but does seem more comfortable on the right. He ticks all the boxes – speed, energy, dribbling, goal-scoring, tactical awareness; however I don't think he's a complete player who will solve all of our problems on his own. I think, however, that he's the best, most proven and versatile winger that we've been linked with as we've searched for a "Mane clone" and I don't see why he wouldn't meet those expectations.

We have a front 3 who all stay fairly central. I don't think the left/ right thing matters as much as people think.

Well that's more encouraging. But what do you think of his character? It's been generally agreed in recent months that we need to bring in players who won't be bullied and will show some fight and fortitude when the going gets tough. Has he improved on that side of his game?

Unfortunately I don't know enough to answer that – you would need to watch a player week in and week out over the course of a season or more to get a sense. Looking at his stats on transfermarkt, it doesn't seem like there is any trend to scoring or assisting more or less against "top" sides or away from home. Even the kind of "dry spell" that we were worried about with Mane last summer doesn't seem to be present. Frankly I have no idea why some people here say "he looks like someone who bottles it in big games" – what can that possibly be based on? If it's his time as a young player at Chelsea, then I don't think that's a right way to judge him.

Fair enough, although I had the same impression as Ryan from watching him recently. To put the question the other way round, is there evidence of him dominating, or at least generally impressing, in a high pressure game? Because my great concern, here and now, is that we just don't have enough players who'll stand up and take back control when things are going wrong. We've plenty of players who can look very good when the team is looking good, but who crumble in a crisis. I'm really keen for us to recruit not just very good players but very good, strong characters this summer. Because this team as it stands isn't going to strengthen a new player - the new player needs to strengthen it.

Here's another question - maybe more pertinent: Klopp has chosen him and clearly sees a lot more than we do. So what does he see and where, and in what formation, does he expect to play Salah ?

I think Ryan watched him in one game against Lazio, and they lost the Rome derby 3-1 I think. Every Roma player under performed in that game mind you, so its not really enough to judge him anyway.

I've seen him bully big defenders like Koulibaly from Napoli, so he doesn't seem like the type to shy away from pressing and getting stuck in.

Haven't watched enough of him regularly either mind, but his form for Roma these last two seasons have been fantastic.

If it wasn't for the price I'd assume he'd be there to challenge Mane. I guess in a Klopp team there's great fluidity anyway, so starting positions aren't absolutely everything, but I'm sure I've read in the past that he sees right wing as his position. The other concern is that, in that position, we've actually got some promising kids, so I'd hope that the door still stays open for them to come through.
