Mirallas' tackle on Suarez

I don't get how this wasn't a red. Dowd was looking at it, and it was terrible.

What the hell was that Everton player who raised his hands complaining about?

How the fuck is Martinez justifying that kind of tackle?

Dowd had a good game overall, but that was a dismal tackle to miss.

No point focusing on it. Could've been a red, wasn't and in football you will always argue that black is white if it helps your cause.

There is a point focusing on it, because it has happened several times this season.
Larsson got away with something similar a couple of weeks ago.

Someones career will end before referees can agree on whats a red card offence or not.
Its a red card every day of the week.

Just imagine if that had been Suarez on Mirallas. The card would have red and out of his pocket before he got there. Nice to see our physio have a fucking word as well.

It was a disgusting, late, high and dangerous stamp on Suarez's knee. Nice to see that it didn't faze Suarez though! he went in hard and fair on the same player not long after. And that wasn't Mirallas' only offence, he was throwing the elbow and could have had three legitimate bookings.

I know it's back to a bygone era but the likes of Whelan or Souness or Case would have sorted Mirallas out very quickly after that sort of challenge.

I remember reading Souness' book and in the 1981 European cup final he "enforced" the dirty little cunt that was Camacho, only to be sorted out by Stielike himself and left as a passenger for the game. How the times have changed.

The odd thing was how long he took before making a decision. It was as if he was playing out whole different scenarios in his head. And I think he knew it was a red and he bottled it. He was using every trick in the book to play for time - suddenly deciding one player ought to leave him alone (whilst ignoring all the others), having a chat with the physio, telling one more player to walk away, having another chat with the medical staff, etc etc. He was shitting himself. If you're immediately doubtful about it, give it a yellow. I don't see how taking minutes is going to improve that initial judgement. He hadn't got a replay to watch, and unless he's got a photographic memory complete with alternative angles and a magnifying facility, I don't know what was going on in his head. 'Phil, Phil, I thought that wasn't too bad a tackle. Yes, Phil, I agree with you, but hang on a bit...Yes, I still agree with you, but hang on...yep, still do...' All he could do was ask his assistant and then get the card out. He was hopelessly clueless out there.

Personally I think Dowd has it in for Suarez.
He was the fourth official in the same fixture last season when Suarez did his diving celebration infront of the Everton bench.
He was shaking his head and making gestures like some sort of arse licking do-gooder bellend.
Dowd has always been an attention seeking home town ref.

I don't even think he had that good a game. He gave Distin licence to elbow, kick and push his way through the match, he ignored other cynical fouls by Mirallas, he looked at Henderson's bloodied head as if it was a religious sign and he gave Lukaku the annual Duncan Ferguson Freedom of the Penalty Area award. And then he books Lucas for his least stupidest tackle of the season. He's a joke.

Same old Everton yesterday though. Kick shit out of everyone and hope they get lots of corners and freekicks.

Henderson and Agger were both on the end of robust challenges where they were elbowed/pushed in the face, Gerrard makes a relatively innocuous leap for the ball and all hell breaks loose with Distin crying to the ref. HELLO!

As for that challenge, it was a red, of course there's a "point" to focusing on it, if he'd walked he wouldn't have had a hand in a couple of goals and we'd have been (rightly) playing against 10 men. It was a poor decision that potentially cost us points. Not because it "helps our case", it was terrible reffing from what was a pretty dire 90 minutes of officiating. Like someone said, the condemnation would have been stark in contrast had it been the other way round.

Yes, I was disappointed in Martinez as well trying to make a lot of that. I know loads of managers do that but he's normally better than that.

I missed that, I'd read his comments about the Miralles challenge and thought it was typically fair and respectful from Martinez, so it's disappointing that he's made something of a nothing challenge.

I suppose after his first derby he felt obliged but excusing Mirallas' tackle as not malicious but condemning Gerrard for something that could have been nasty is really beneath him! (Maybe if Gerrard had 'closed his eyes' so as to render the whole thing harmless it would have been okay!)

Everton manager Roberto Martínez, in his first Merseyside derby, did not feel Mirallas deserved to be sent off but accepted Rodgers' viewpoint. "I can see why. I have seen the replay and obviously Kevin goes for the ball with a typical striker's tackle and closes his eyes when he gets to the incident and his right leg catches Suárez," he said. "I don't think it is a red card because it is not a malicious incident, he tries to win the ball but gets there late. "I think a yellow card, bearing in mind the emotions you bring into a derby, was the right decision. But I can see why, if that had been against my team, I would've been thinking it would have been a red card.

"I was a little bit disappointed with Steven Gerrard's elbow on Gareth Barry. It did not contact his face but it was not a natural position to have an elbow and that could have been a nasty incident."

So a potential leg breaking tackle is ok because it was clumsy rather than malicious, but a flailing elbow that didn't really connect "could" have been nasty, so that's worse. Hmmmmmm 'kay!

Martinez's words on SSN:

"I don't think it is a red card because it is not a malicious incident, he tries to win the ball but gets there late.
But I can see why, if that had been against my team, I would've been thinking it would have been a red card."

Soooo, it's not a red but if it was against you it should be. WTF!!
Hey Roberto, does Dowd spit or swallow?

Agree with Leo. Also think Dowd has it in for Suarez.
Appalling CUNT of a ref.

Sad thing is if I that had been Suarez on Mirallas it would of been a red and also he would of been hung out to dry in the media come Sunday morning. . The media would of lapped it up...

The FA with their new rules would of bowed down to media pressure and he would of been banned for more than just the standard ban...

Debate on motd2 extra now and Schmeichel and two journalists are slating Dowd and Martinez.
All in agreement that Suarez would have got the line instantly.
They are also calling for bans for referees whom make game changing mistakes.

Ha ha, we'd only have about five refs available each week!
True that.
Always thought that Alan Greene and Holt were massive dicks but they are actually talking some sense this morning.
All in agreement that the headline makers every Sunday morning is the refs and it's getting ridiculous.

Suprised by Martinez's delusional comments there, complete and utter shite spewing out of his mouth, hes usually very respectful, honest and sane with his post match interviews.

Im surprised anyone thinks Dowd had a good game apart from the Mirallis incident.

Incidentally I presume he saw the assault as he gave a card. If as a ref he didn't think that worthy of a red then he should be referreing. The fat fuck!

That's because they are getting things wrong. The only solution is to give them the resources to ensure they make the correct decision by allowing video replays and consultation with a separate official. Until then, they're always going to make mistakes and subjective decisions.

Green's a Red, hates Ferguson and used to give a hard time to anyone dissing us without good reason when he hosted the Beeb's radio phone-in. He can be annoying at times but he's not all bad by any means. Holt I'll give you, though he was equally appalled by Dowd's decision.

It's the FA which would have to do something about it and, as you say, they've already made it clear that they're not changing their policy on this, the incompetent corrupt pr!cks.
