Mertesacker to leave Werder Bremen

Allegedly he wants to leave a team because they are defensively frail and not guaranteed to qualify for the Champions League.

Why would he even consider us if he did, indeed, decide to leave. Frying pans and fires come to mind.

Hmm a defender leaving because they're defensively frail. He can't be doing a good job. And it wouldn't be a good idea to sign a defender from a team with a shit defence would it?

Like Brendan said, he's tall, good in the air, but slow. And in my opinion, a bit poo.

I've been hoping we sign Mertesacker for some time now. He's not as good as Hyypiä was of course but I can't think of many realistic options better than him atm.

He's 30 though

He is.

I've still got a feeling that him and Agger could be rather potent pairing for years to come. Would complement eachother perfect.

Agger is better.

Mertesacker won't quit Bremen

Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker says he is not interested in listening to any possible offers as he is solely focused on his responsibilities with the Bundesliga club.

Mertesacker has been strongly linked with a move to Arsenal, with Arsene Wenger admitting he may be forced to sign a new centre back following injuries to Thomas Vermaelen and Sebastien Squillaci.

However, the Germany international, 26, has 18 months remaining on his current contract and remains committed to helping Bremen improve on 14th place in the Bundesliga table.

"We are in a difficult moment with Werder and we should not be talking about me at this time,'' Mertesacker told Kreiszeitung. "I am needed here for our day-to-day work and it is my duty to concentrate on that. I cannot deal with anything else.

"Like I say, most of it does not even get through to me and I have told my agent that he should leave me in peace. In certain situations, players should protect themselves by not losing track of the most important things in their job."

Maybe it means he can still leave in the summer

What a shame.

Shawcross it is then eh?

Do we really badly need another CB now that Agger is fit again, Carra is due to return soon and Kelly is on the verge, hopefully, of breaking into the first team? It's not like we are competing for Premiership title and CL anyway... I mean we need one in the long run, but we can definitely hold out until the summer, until after the situation with the manager gets sorted out.

He has the arial threat we desperately need at the back..

Yep, a perfect partner for Agger. I don't think the article means that much, if Bremen decides to cash in I doubt he'd refuse to move. Of course if he was publicly demanding a move it might lower the price but it would also make him a bit of a cunt.

Comoli said yesterday that we are looking for a left back, winger and forward in this transfer window.
I suppose if roy was still in charge there is a chance that Agger would have been sold thus necessating a replacent but in the current circumstances I cannot see us buying a centre half.

Mertesacker fancies England

Germany international Per Mertesacker has conceded he would be interested in a move to the Premier League, should he leave Werder Bremen any time soon.

Mertesacker remains a key figure in the international set-up, and will start on Saturday night against Kazakhstan, but has been short of his best form for Werder this term.

He has received a lot of criticism for his role in Bremen's demise with numerous uncharacteristic mistakes costing his team points, yet he remains a rumoured target of Arsenal and Liverpool.

However, the 26-year-old says he is currently only focused on saving Bremen from the drop this year and improving his own form, and then he will consider his options with a move to England being an "attractive" one.

"England has been an issue for a few years now, but I cannot make a decision yet," he told Die Welt newspaper.

"Of course the Premier League is attractive, but right now there is only one issue for me and that is avoiding the drop."
Dip in form

Mertesacker's contract with Bremen expires in 2012, meaning the Bundesliga club could only demand a substantial fee for him this summer, but he insists "now is not the time" to discuss where he will be playing next year.

Instead, he is trying to work out why his form has dipped this season.

"There are just so many different reasons which all came together," he explained.

"But I believe that it happens now and again that somebody does not play one season at the very highest level.

"You have to go through a dip to improve. We are not machines who always work, but that does not detract from the fact that we cannot repeat such a terrible season."

Bremen are 12th in the Bundesliga, just four points above the relegation zone with seven games remaining.

Werder Bremen have not ruled out parting company with reported Arsenal and Liverpool target Per Mertesacker at the end of the season.

The Germany defender's contract with Bremen expires in June 2012
, meaning the Bundesliga club could only demand a substantial fee for him this summer.

Mertesacker, also understood to be on Liverpool's radar, has already revealed the prospect of a move to the Premier League is an 'attractive' one.

And Bremen boss Klaus Allofs says the club could be prepared to cash in on the 26-year-old this summer, as well as goalkeeper Tim Wiese, who is also out of contract next year.

He told BILD: "If you are not going to hand out an extension to an outrunning contract then you need to know all the possibilities available to you.

"I am unable to just look after the money, I am also unable to just look after the sport factor.

"As soon as we are aware of our fate in Bundesliga this spring, we are going to clarify if we are able to sign extensions to these contracts.

"We will be in talks, that is for sure."

Mertesacker and Wiese are both first-team regulars for Bremen, who are currently a disappointing 12th in the Bundesliga and just four points clear of the drop zone with seven games remaining.

Only seen him in World Cups, but he looked exactly what we need right now.
