Meireles. *SIGNED*

My absolute preference would be

------------------------Poulsen------------------------
---------------Gerrard----------Meireles--------------
Maxi----------------------------------------------Cole
-------------------------Fernando----------------------

I thjnk those three represent the closest to Mascherano/Alonso/Gerrard which was a cracking look in thier last season together. I also think Maxi is better out wide than Deadly and Cole is better than Riera. Against the dross take out Poulsen, drop Gerrard in and move Cole inside for Babelinho.
Good problems these.

I much prefer the upbeat Oncy to the downbeat one. Last week was worrying.
I honestly thought Kuyt, Aquilani and Mascherano were leaving with only Poulsen coming in. That would have fucked us totally. As it was only 2 left and Konchesky, Poulsen and Meireles all came in. S'all good.

That team could be spot on.

I don't expect Poulsen to be a like for like replacement to Masher. He is more likely to play Hamman type role than Poulsen and that may work out in our favor.

100% agree.

am not that excited about this guy, partly becuase I know nothing about him, i hope I am pleasantly surprised by him - would have been nice to sign someone like martinez from athletico, but supose he was out of our price range!

I'd be more worried if posters like 'red maradona' rated Meireles, because that's a guarantee they'll be fucking shit

He fucked up for Cyprus 2nd on Friday, but then scored from 35 yards.

Left Foot too
Ya. I like that. Having a left footed CM will definitely be an added advantage.

My fear is this....with Poulsen/Gerrard/Meireles our defense may not get the kind of cover they got when Masher and Xabi were shielding the defense. I hope we make up for that in terms of forward impetus, but i doubt that will be the case. Mostly likely scenario is that we have become weaker.

We'll have a LB who isn't a complete mess, though, which will counter this to a point.

I think we'll be okay, but I'll need to see more of Poulsen and Meriles before I'm convinced. What will stand us in good stead is that defending from the front and pressing hard as a team have been instilled into this club from both the Houllier and Benitez terms in the dugout. Working hard and closing down has never been a problem (until last season) so I'm not too concerned at the moment.

pathetic as usual - read the post than comment.

That Portugal v Cyprus video looked like that was some game. Good shot by our man but the goalie was at fault I thought.

Right on, brother

Has Roy actually said anything about Meireles yet? I searched on the offal, but can't find the usual 'manager-says-new-player-is-dog's-bollocks' interview. I'd like to know what he thinks he's bought, how many times he's seen him play etc.

Poulsen is worse than Mascherano, Meireles is no Alonso, Cole and Maxi are worse than Riera and Kuyt playing in their natural positions, and yes, that's probably as close as we can get, but it's hardly a good problem to have.

Ah no Farkmaster. Cole would be better than Riera for sure. And Maxi adds more going forward....not so sure about the workrate going back of course. Replacing Alonso and Mascherano would take a lot of money, but Meireles seems like a decent punt for now. Poulsen, for me, is the only definite down market replacement

Anyway, we'll soon be sold for UK351 M and we'll have buckets of cash to spend this time next year (puts down book on power of positive thinking)

Can't agree with that Farky. The Poulsen / Mascher thing you are no doubt correct on. Miereles? Who knows, he has as good a reputation as Alonso did when he came to us originally, as for Cole and Maxi being worse than Cole and Riera....nah

regards

They are worse played in those positions.

Perhaps Meireles will hit the ground running, and I was encouraged by our purchasing him, but I just don't see that team competing with the counterpart mentioned. It's weaker in midfield and narrower.

I'm excited to see what Meireles can do for us by way of not passing sideways and jogging around just in front of our CBs. It's be hard for him not to be a massive improvement.
