Heh, he's played 24 games this season, the match fitness will be fine.

As for where he'll be played, I'm guessing Rafa will drop Kuyt more to be honest. He's had a lot of stinkers this year, and that will be delt with.

He's played a bit on the left aswell.
If it comes to that, Kuyt's played on the left for his country.

He's sat on the bench for his country too.

So our inability to get the ball upfield by our lack of width/creativity in the centre to get the ball to a striker, should be rectified by a striker. I agree we need more strikers but based on current form we appear to be a bit crap at making chances
Not too sure about that Fabio, not often I disagree with a Windever sibling.
We had ten shots at goal against Reading , two of them on target. We do, as I said in another thread somewhere, despite our shortcomings in midfield, usually make a reasonable number of chances, we never have enough bodies in the box though.
A striker first and some decent attacking midfield players next. Maxi sounds like a good opportunity.
Surely Sammy Lee must tell him Dirk and Lucas are not the answer.

The stats may tell us that we had 10 shots on target but I don't recall too many decent goal scoring opportunities. There was Gerrard's first time effort, one or two kerfuffles in the box and that's about it. Our passing play in the oppositions half has quite often been dreadful this season.

We of course need another striker as well though.

Where will Rafa play him?
On the right but will he drop Kuyt?
In the middle but what about Mascher, Aqua and Lucas?
On the left? Thats not his position so I guess thats probably where Rafa is gonna play him.
Good player but lacks match fitness at the moment.

Our main priority is a striker.
Our main priority is to find improved cover for our paper thin squad - which includes finding quality out wide and a striker. So he is a "good player" by your own admission but its still not good enough? Fucking hell Toni, you're becoming as boring as Rage.

I'd be pretty happy with this transfer window if the players and manager we currently have on the books find a clue. Despite some obvious holes in the lineup we'd like to fill, our squad is horribly underperforming. If they find some form things will look a lot better.

I'm a bit surprised by that first part Vlad and even more surprised to find myself disagreeing with you. Do you really think we create that many chances? It's one of my criticisms of our play and the style Rafa used in his first few years and has reverted to this season; we keep possession but do precious little with it. Our play in the final third has, IMO, been atrocious this season. Movement has been limited, execution poor but, mostly, our creativity has been pitiful. Not only do the players appear on different wave-lengths but they seem largely bereft of ideas.

I don't think we create many chances at all - in fact I'm not sure we created more than one genuine chance against Villa. We scored from some fortune in that the ball bounced off a player into the path of possibly the worlds best striker. For me there is huge difference between a shot on target and a chance; ironically I think our best chance was the one for Babel which didn't result in a shot on target.

I don't think we create anywhere near enough chances, but our ratio for converting any chances is appalling.
My point is there is no point creating more chances unless we intend, or have the staff to put them away

That sounds like an overhaul is required up front Vlad; surely Torres and Gerrard aren't candidates for such change. Kuyt seems to be in a different category and I've long thought that the left side was wasted at Anfield but Maxi would surely make the right change for one of those two positions. What else is there to change in our attack? That's where I think a large part of the problem lies - the rest of the team is primarily there to prevent the opposition scoring.

£5 million for Dossena would be excellent.
It would be exceptional - although 1.5m for Voronin is unexpectedly good as well.

Never good enough for Liverpool but, TBH, I've never really disliked Voronin. He struck me last season as a player with a good football brain but not the physical attributes to capitalise on it. He's missed plenty but never because he didn't want to score - he just didn't have the pace, strength or skill to make it happen. Couple his brain and will with the physical capabilities of Babel and you'd have a great player; a shame Ryan doesn't have a quarter of the guts and fortitude.

With rare exception, we seem far too static and predictable in defense. We don't attack the box with enough power or frequency, play far too narrow, and often allow defenders to catch up and get settled before attacking. Then we fluff the chances we do get, crosses don't beat the fullback, etc etc. It's nothing new, we've been doing it for all of Rafa's tenure. What I find frustrating is that every once in a while we show signs of being an invasive, attacking force, doing the exact opposite of everything I described above. And people start to believe again, etc.

This year has been particularly bad because we've seemed impotent up front but can't keep the ball out of our net either.

Dani Alves.

Buy him. Stick him on the right wing.

I managed the deal in FIFA 10 and he's a fucking winner.

I think it's more about the support around Gerrard and Torres, and that doesn't necessarily have to mean creativity, the problem is we don't get enough bodies forward, and when we do we've got players who are hit and miss in front of goal. Yossi and Kuyt have both weighed in, but we need at least one more other who has a bit of a killer instinct. Someone who makes clever runs from deep, ala Garcia, the kind of runs that are difficult to pick up that will hopefully see us get another 12-15 goals a season. Reading was just one of those games, Torres missed the bulk of the chances and he's usually the main source of goals (along with Gerrard). It'd just be good to have that one extra threat.

It's difficult to analyze without being completely reactionary. We were scoring goals for fun last season and despite the huge loss Xabi has been, it's certainly not all down to him.

The simple fact is there isn't enough creative quality between the likes of Kuyt, Yossi, Riera, and Babel to aid the likes of Gerrard and Torres. They're are all okay players but they all have tendancies to go missing for games on end, and that's something we can ill afford.

Kuyt and Yossi are worth keeping as squad options, even Riera is I guess. But we should be looking to improve upon all of them.

Riera is an average player but he is so much better than Yossi and all our fullbacks on the left. He's been a big miss. Kuyt has been atrocious, Gerrard has been injured and out of sorts, Torres has been in and out and our playmaker is no longer here.

Last years attack has either been missing in parts or badly unperforming. Yossi has been good when not played on the left and Torres obviously has been a bright spark, but that's really it.

Balls, I can see how that would be better for Atletico.

Hopefully Maxi is determined to play for Rafa and alongside Fernando once more...
