Maxi Rodriguez on loan for rest of the season?

That doesn't matter, as according to the Echo and other sources he wants to play for us.

They think the deal can be concluded before the weekend.

Would it be worth our while to try an offer including Babel?
He surely wouldn't go there? I can't see him ousting their attacking options for a start.

Well, he's already moved countries once so he may be more willing to do so this time than Bentley. Good point about him displacing/not displacing what they've already got, but IF he knuckled down I think he would be good enough to push for a place.

Or is that what you might call "magical thinking"? 😉

According to BBC gossip Spurs are in for him as well and willing to offer Bently as part of the deal
Balls, I can see how that would be better for Atletico.

Hopefully Maxi is determined to play for Rafa and alongside Fernando once more...
... and alongside his countries captain.

Wasn't Bentley linked to Atletico last Janruary aswel? Or was that SWP at one stage?

He's certainly got the raw talent to force his way into most top sides should he get his head right, but I think he needs to go somewhere where he's guaranteed games for the next year or so to kickstart his career - he wouldn't get that at Atletico.

Magical thinking is all good in this case.

Riera is an average player but he is so much better than Yossi and all our fullbacks on the left. He's been a big miss. Kuyt has been atrocious, Gerrard has been injured and out of sorts, Torres has been in and out and our playmaker is no longer here.

Last years attack has either been missing in parts or badly unperforming. Yossi has been good when not played on the left and Torres obviously has been a bright spark, but that's really it.
I personally think calling Riera average is a bit of a disservice to the player who keeps forum darling Silva out of the Spanish team. He certainly as you say has been a huge miss for us this season.

I like Riera too but Iniesta and Silva would play left of the midfield before him if fully fit. He isn't keeping Silva out of the team as such.

He did in the last Euro champs, didn't he?

*scratches head*

He doesn't really keep anyone out of the Spanish side. The manager rotates now and again and players like Silva and Iniesta have had spells out injured.

And he is average.

Silva wasn't injured in the last Euro champs, was he?

(The question mark isn't rhetorical, I really don't know).

I can remember both playing, so I'm in the same boat as you. I do remember Silva scoring, though.

Silva started all the games in Euro2008 - apart from maybe that last group game. I don't recall Riera featuring at all at that time.

I think you're thinking of the Confederations Cup in which Riera played a big part and looked very good.

Don't think Riera travelled to Euro 2008. He played a big part in Confed cup but he is clearly behind Silva and Iniesta in the pecking order.

I think Riera can be a useful player in a team brimming with superstars, as the opposition have their hands full keeping track of the real quality. He is also much better when those around him give him options with intelligent movement. In short, he is a very tidy footballer who uses the ball well and rarely concedes possession.

Of course in a team bereft of quality movement, with low confidence and an over-reliance on one or two genuine stars, he looks like what he is - a decent, but ultimately limited footballer. We either need to significantly improve on him, or significantly improve the players around him, with the former obviously being the easiest option open to us. A pacey player is vital as far as I'm concerned but with the likes of Gonzalez and Babel still fresh in the mind, genuine quality is of utmost importance for whoever comes in next.

Riera is a good player. He's scored goals for us, has pretty good skills and shows intelligence and maturity in his play. The one think he lacks that would make him a great player is searing pace.

I said last season that Riera had exceeded my admittedly low expectations and had proven to be a decent squaddie, but if we're being brutally honest - as everyone seems to be in the mood for doing when it comes to the rest of the squad - he's nothing special.

I don't think anyone can disagree with that, but the same would apply to any half decent attacker out there - the problem is we're not Barcelona or Spain. We've had spells of playing some really good stuff under Rafa but there is always the danger of reverting back to type when we're not in top form - we've seen it too many times - because that style of play isn't inherent in our team or manager.

I remember a couple years ago, we used to have big threads talking about the types of attacker we needed and robin, for example, was a big advocate of the attacking midfielder and clever passing interplay whereas I had for years banged on about individual explosive talent. And pace. With more of that, you become less reliant on Barca esque pass and move team play, which I think for this team is a good thing.

Now, you might say, "oh great, well find us another 100M and we'll sign a couple more players like Torres", but they don't all have to be of that standard. Reading for all their fighting spirit were pretty poor the other day but in McAnuff or whatever the fuck his name was, they had pace and a constant out ball, which made them dangerous. I've seen very little of Utd this season but I'm sure Ferguson signed Valencia to ensure that at the very least, they retained the pace (if not the supreme quality) that Ronaldo brought.

I have no idea. We don't really have enough money to go after the big boys, so we're left looking for a decent punt.

I mentioned Elia last season who really impressed me for Van Claren's Twente in the UEFA Cup - he looked pretty skillful and fucking lightning. I have to be honest though and say I've not seen him enough to really judge him properly - was excited to see us linked to him earlier this season though.

Maxi Rodriguez is on the verge of joining Liverpool from Atletico Madrid, after consulting his international captain Javier Mascherano, Goal.com UK understands.

The 29-year-old has been strongly linked with a switch to Anfield, and a source close to Liverpool told Goal.com UK today that the move was "a certainty", following Maxi's conversation with his Argentina skipper Mascherano.

It is believed that Rodriguez's agent, Jurgen Milewski, has already held talks with Liverpool about a potential transfer, and that the player is looking for assurances regarding first-team football as he looks to secure a place in Diego Maradona's Argentine squad for the World Cup this summer.

Maxi is out of contract at Atleti this summer, and would be available for a knock-down fee, believed to be around €3 million (£2.7m). Boca Juniors are also thought to be monitoring Maxi's situation, but a move to the Premier League would certainly be a more attractive option for a player with World Cup aspirations.

And with Liverpool's financial situation known to be prohibitive, such a move would represent good business for all parties.

The player has recently fallen out of favour at Atleti, and was left out by manager Quique Sanchez Flores for Saturday's win over Sevilla, while Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has long been desperate to add a quality wide midfielder to his side, without breaking the bank.

As for Mascherano, Barcelona have long been linked with a move, but Benitez will be confident that the arrival of Maxi may go some way to appeasing the 25-year-old midfielder, who is currently in talks to extend his contract at Anfield beyond 2011.

Liverpool are likely to be busy this transfer window, with Italian defender Andrea Dossena believed to be on the verge of completing a £4.5 million switch to Napoli, and both Ryan Babel and Andriy Voronin believed to be up for sale as Benitez looks to chop and change a squad that has come in for plenty of criticism in the wake of the Reds' awful start to the season.

Seem to be some conflicting reports about us buying or loaning him, I was under the impression that we wanted to loan him for 6 months and paying a small fee for that deal.

Has he signed yet?

***WARNING - CLICHE ALERT***

I think he'll be chomping at the bit to play, what with it being a world cup year and all.

Where will Rafa play him?
On the right but will he drop Kuyt?
In the middle but what about Mascher, Aqua and Lucas?
On the left? Thats not his position so I guess thats probably where Rafa is gonna play him.
Good player but lacks match fitness at the moment.

Our main priority is a striker.
Our main priority is to find improved cover for our paper thin squad - which includes finding quality out wide and a striker. So he is a "good player" by your own admission but its still not good enough? Fucking hell Toni, you're becoming as boring as Rage.
He's a good player but i have some doubts he can make it at a big club like LFC and in another country.
Our main priority is a striker then possibly a good winger.
Rodriguez woul be a good addition but If Torres gets injured again we'll be in trouble regardless.
I'd be a lot more confident with RVN as our backup striker.

But because we buy maxi doesn't mean we won't get a striker! FFs at least wait til the window is closed to slate any purchases

Yup that's what I dont understand. If there is a good player who can improve us and available on the cheap then we should sign him as soon as possible. That doesnt mean that we're not prioritising a striker.

fat chops says its happening -

18.28 The latest instalment of our Maxi Rodriguez watch comes from Guillem Balague, who claims the Atletico Madrid midfielder is very close to finalizing a two and a half year deal with Liverpool. He has been left out of the Spanish club's squad ahead of Wednesday's Cup tie against Recreativo.
