Mateo Kovacic

Is that in reply to me? If so it's best not to clog up threads with James Bond preferences and random cricket theory. I was just being cheeky but I know the mods know that anyway. I'll stop for sure

So this Kovacic is supposed to be mint right. Tell me about him @Spaghetti Legs - My non LFC footy knowledge is woeful I'm afraid.

No RA, it was to Red Maradona.

I have only seen snippets of him, hes clearly highly rated but hes just a youngster making his way in the game atm, wouldn't mind if we took a punt on him at all but it seems people are missing the point of what we really need this summer - 1st team players that are going to make a difference and improve us now.

If theres an either/or with Lallana then it should be done with Rakitic and Mkhitaryan, thats where genuine comparisons can be made.

Thanks for the info mate. Appreciated. I'm not like most posters on here who know loads about football formations and boss transfer targets. I tend to be a results only kind of guy. I love LFC of course but I love to hear the information from more learned souls and buzz off their enthusiasm.

Have you ever read any Robert. M. Pirsig? Give it a go - It's great. You'll probably get where when I'm coming from. 🙂

Sounds quite deep, im useless with books, got a fair few of the autobiographies of our players and half of them are still unread, unforgivable really.

Nah - You'll be fine. It's a great road movie book. Check this out -http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zen-Art-Motorcycle-Maintenance-Anniversary/dp/0099322617/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1400102056&sr=1-1&keywords=zen+and+the+art+of+motorcycle+maintenance

I need a second opinion - @doctor_mac - You ever read this?

I should probably reiterate. I wasn't questioning this guy. I mean, that surely the price bracket is irrelevant, it should just be a question of whether the player is good enough (or potentially) and, within reason, we're not paying heavily over our valuation. That wasn't really the stance last year on here and ultimately, continuity served us well. Obviously we need to buy, but it has to just be right players.

I just want us to utilise our budget well and look back on another opportunity pissed away.

Compared to other transfer seasons we now have a decent spine. Sterling and Flanagan have been our only real additions since last summer. Still a massive question mark regarding Sakho imo. Enrique will come back into the squad almost like a new signing. We need quality this time around. No more Aspas no more Albertos. We've got Suso and Tex coming in as well.
Looking good so far.

Here is an excellent write up on him from back in March. The author thinks he might be best used as a winger, at least until he grows some more muscle:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1988124-transfer-target-who-will-rescue-mateo-kovacic-from-inter

In April the same website quoted an £8M price, although with a warning it might not be accurate. For anywhere below £15M I would definitely take a chance on him; he is far from a finished article, but the potential is huge. I think with time, seasoning and a bit of luck he will turn into a dominant all-around midfielder.

I agree re Sakho, but it is early days. I wouldn't be adverse to adding three additions to the backline, but we have the Portuguese lad to come back aswell who might well oust one of them (hopefully).

Johnson needs to drop down ala Ashley Cole, Mignolet needs real competition... I'm not convinced by Kelly and don't think Wisdom is ready to offer us anything, Agger is one of those players who might compliment the right defender for us, but he'd have to sharpen up his game after injuries looked to have taken their toll last season. Skrtel is Skrtel, he'll cover more ground than any of the back line and make more interceptions, but he'll fuck up too, Toure did ok but we don't really want to be relying on him too much. And Sakho, well he needs to cut out the rash challenges and prove his captaincy material by stepping out the shadows of being a newbie and starting to be more vocal and more of a leader at the back.

Ideally we need:

Another centre back or to promote Ilori
A young keeper
A first choice right back
A deep midfielder to provide cover/competition (Kovacic, Coady?)
An attacking midfielder (Lallana)
A wide attacker or two (Kono? Ibe)
A striker to add to Studge, Suarez & maybe Borini if he stays (I'm not convinced)

For the back line, I wouldn't be surprised to see us go for someone like Richards, though I'm not massively convinced beyond his potential, who can cover a couple of positions and fits the mould of signings like Sturridge.

You forgot the LB, which seems to be a top priority for Rodgers (although for me our RB position is just as weak, if not weaker). But I guess he really doesn't trust Enrique, never really has.

Yeah I was a long haired, idealist amateur philosophy student when I read it in my early 20's - I remember I took that book and 'The Unbearable Lightness Of Being' on a backpacking trip around S.E Asia. Fuck me! What a wannbe beatnik wanker I must have been back then! Still a great book though. 🙂

At least you can admit to it, that's one step on the long journey of recovery.
