What happened to Manuel Fernandez? Where does he play now?

I thought he did well when he was at Portsmouth and later at Everton.
It's all very complicated, but he's at Valencia at the moment.

Inter tried to buy him in January but he failed a medical.
Is it terminal? Career Ending?

Can he play again at the level he was? May be we can get a bargain here?

No idea, but I'm sick of injury prone players, so I'd rather we stay well clear.

Well, if it's true then I'll be there.

Prove it.
I have plenty of witnesses.

I was cheering for Ghana a lot and he frustrated me no end. Shot when he should pass, passed when he should have shot, passed to the wrong guy all the time etc. If he played for us I think I'd hate him.

I was also cheering for Ghana, and I just thought his energy was brilliant. I thought he had an excellent tournament and was regularly part of their best play.

Yea I thought his energy was great too and he's an impressively athletic and confident guy. I reckon he makes bad decisions though. I'd love to put Kuyt's brain in his body.

Roy Hodgson swoops to steal Standard Liege's Steven Defour from under the nose of Sir Alex Ferguson

Last updated at 8:50 PM on 30th July 2010

As Inter Milan prepare their first bid for unsettled Liverpool midfielder Javier Mascherano, manager Roy Hodgson has stepped up the search for his replacement.

The Liverpool boss was due to watch Standard Liege midfielder Steven Defour in Belgium last night and is considering a £10million bid for a player who is also a target for Manchester United.

So keen are United on the 22-year-old Belgium international that manager Sir Alex Ferguson wrote him a letter of encouragement when he broke his foot last year and has since kept an eye on his year-long recovery.

With Mascherano expressing his desire to leave Anfield, Hodgson and the Liverpool board will not stand in his way but they are determined not to sell him on the cheap to former boss Rafael Benitez.

The Spaniard and his new employers are prepare for a long fight for the Argentina captain, valued at £25m by Liverpool, and are ready to offer former Portsmouth midfielder Sulley Muntari as part of their first offer this week.

But the Ghana international, a virtual ever-present at Inter under Jose Mourinho, is unlikely to want to quit the San Siro, while Hodgson has his eyes on other options in any case.

Its a nice (and fucking sneaky) gesture all the same.
I'd love us to get him ahead of United. Love it.

We're getting to dangerous realms of keegan here!!!

VERY DANGEROUS REALMS

Yeah, he did it with RVN too, only he went to see him in hospital.

Give him his due, it spells out their intentions whilst remaining in the law & I suppose in many cases it works.

to defour.

The Echo is also carrying the story about our interest in Defour.

I wonder if Lucas is being considered as Mashers replacement if we do want Defour. I can't imagine we'll sign two central midfielders.

I remember being upset when they were first linked to him, then when he did his leg (cruciate?) I thougt they'd either lose interest or that he wouldnt be much good.

Bastard.

definately not going to get my hopes up for defour. I think it's more likely we'll get an old clogger as mash's replacement.

Defour can easily fill the role of Mascher. He's got it all tbh. Energetic, strong in the tackle but also a playmaker. Reminds me of Roy Keane tbh. We don't need a specific holding midfielder either imho.

A midfield duo of Gerrard and Defour would be ace!

For 10 mill £ we should just sign as soon as possible

Why not? We have quite thin central midfield at the moment. Especially considering Aquilani's and Gerrard's injury problems.

I thought he was more of a Scholes than a Keane, albeit not quite as shit at the defensive aspect.

He started out as an defensive midfielder I believe. He's much more a box to box player than Scholes. Maybe something in between Scholes and Keane then. I guess thats why Ginsoak is very keen on getting him.

I've been impressed by his defensive abilites tbh.

I read a Lucas interview today (Guardian?) where he said he thought he had what it takes to fill Mascherano's position. He's not reall mobile enough or a good enough tackler, I'd have thought, but it does look like it's being considered.
