Whoah, hold up one second.

Lucas takes a lot of unfair flack because Masher is one-dimensional as fuck... and less so because he himself is just as one-dimensional (only poor on top of it)?
I'm not Lucas biggest fan, but he is far from one-dimensional IMO, & I dont think he's poor either.
Expound on that.
He can pass, despite the reputation he has, he can tackle now too, this aspect of his game has improved dramatically end of last season & during this, he has great movement off the ball, & is very often the only outlet open to players just in front of the penalty area to distribute the ball either further up the pitch or to the wings, the rest of the players all bomb on or hover next to their marker, he actively find space behind them & it enables us to keep possession.

All this is completely ignored by 99% of lfc fans like.

Heh, pass AND tackle? Pssshhh...

I've never been a Lucas basher - just honest about the guy - but this season we've pretty much been applauding him for the very basics. If he makes a tackle or a decent through ball makes it to one of the forwards everyone is like "HEY SEE THAT!". You know that much is true. It's understandable I guess... to some extent... given the stick he's received, but at the end of the day, it doesn't change the real state of affairs.

And ya know, I'm sure the tactical insight ignored by the myopic masses shaking their fists at the lack of stepovers isn't too far off the mark, but again - the qualities you describe aren't really beyond the minimum you'd require of a Liverpool midfielder. At least of the Steady Eddie variety.

It's the current trend - to flex your footballing muscles by demonstrating the value of Lucas - I find it as tedious as the reactionary bollocks spouted by the random Lucas bashers, but fine, whatever. I've never said he's a bad footballer. I've just said that for us, he's not really shown himself to be good enough.

Youre right, he's only average, & I prefaced my original comment with 'I'm not Lucas biggest fan' cos I dont think at the moment that is good enough for us, but, you said he's one dimensional, which he blatantly isnt.

nah i don't think he's one dimensional either, after all he's competent at passing the ball both sideways and backwards.

The player we were sold on by the reports and YouTube comps from his Gremio days wasn't. The player we've seen in a red shirt, he... kinda is.

It's not that showing for the ball and moving it around makes you one dimensional and shit - players like Alonso and teams like Barca are testament to how you can make those qualities the foundation of your game. I say it mainly because the way he uses the ball is quite one dimensional and he lacks the attributes to influence the game in other ways.

Lucas and Gerrard is the best midfield combo at the minute, Mascherano is either unsuited or in poor form (I think both)

we have played Lucas & Masher in midfield maybe 7 times and lost 4 games this season, that's a hell of a strike rate and I'm surprised Benitez sticks with it

Sell him, and buy somebody better.

Simple as fuck.
Yea, we'll just have to transition to a new CB pairing and a new midfield duo over the course of a couple years, what could possibly go wrong?

We don't really have a choice in the matter, but the prospect doesn't fill me with glee.

He's not Gerrard or Torres is he?

He's patently not that enamoured with being here, and is probably at the peak of his value right now - so sell him. Make a fuckload for him, and buy someone who can do what he does and more.

Yea, I get it, as I said, we don't have a choice, but exchanging known goods for unknown ones is always problematic.

1) It is almost certain to generate requirements elsewhere in the team due to the fact that the team will play differently.
2) Sometimes things just don't pan out.
3) It often appears to encourage others to consider leaving.

We were at the end of a team building cycle, and we'll never see what that finished vision looks like, when it was quite close to winning the league. Doesn't mean we're doomed, we can certainly find a less specialist solution than Mascherano, but the idea that finding someone better is some fait accompli is hopeful, as far as I'm concerned. Mascherano is very good at his role.

Just on a note of caution....

its 5 am and i've beend drinking....

IF we were to sell mash that would be two world class midfielders sold in the space of six months....

sold and not replaced that is.

Do you honestly trust the yanks with that cash?

i do not.

Dont sell under any circumstances.

Alternatively, we could keep him, he could stay unhappy, let his contract dwindle down and then he walks away for free.

If he doesn't want to be here, then sell him.

Yes i agree, anyone who does not want to play for Liverpool should be shown the door!

It only brings trouble to keep a want-away player unsettles the team and press never shut up about it.

Id be unhappy to loose such a good player, but its down to him and the money could go on a great forward maybe.
Sorry. To clarify. Are we now just ignoring the 20m central midfielder signed just hours after Alonso said adios?

And it's a bird in the hand situation, yet again. Aquilani could be a catastrophic failure for us, no one really knows, except Oncy that is.

At any rate, it's just wierd to think how recently people were gushing about the best midfield in the world, and now we're contemplating a future based on unknowns, Lucas, and, thank swaddled baby Jesus, Gerrard.
Yeah, but its hardly fair to leverage that against the owners. Rafa scouted him, settled on him and signed him. Its not the Americans fault, unless he's implying they should have said no to Rafa. Which he isnt.

Hypothetically, if we were to get Yaya Toure & £20m for Mascher we would have swapped Alonso/Mascher for Aquilani/Toure and banked about £35m. If Aquilani stays fit then I see this as good business and won't weaken the team particularly if Rafa is given the extra money to stregthen other areas.
