With all the rumours and then the comments coming from his agent it's clear that Mascher is going to leave, but i'd be very surprised if we let him go in January. Hopefully the Italian lad settles in this season and then we can sell Mascher in the summer.
It's gutting that 2 of our better players have wanted out recently, i just hope that this is an end to it.

At least with Masher it seems to be hinging on family issues, Rafa's done everything he can really, he brought him here and helped save his career at the time, he's now captain of his country.
As Vlad said, I suspect something is afoot, though I reckon he's probably (reasonably) been asked to sit it out for the season and see how things develop and if nothing changes then perhaps he'll go, I'd be surprised if it's in January though.
Regards him going, I can see both sides of it. He's a defensive midfielder playing in a central midfield lacking creativity, so people are going to be a bit 'so what' about it all. The problem is though with the right partner he 'can' be brilliant and his strengths become more noticeable as he's allowed to concentrate fully on his own game, rather than trying to do the things he's not really there for. A dominating midfield partner who'll put their foot on the ball and play it will help us see the best in him.
This isn't about the potential loss of Mascherano, it's about the potential loss of what was a World Class midfield last season, to the tune of a possible £60m (that's how highly rated these two individuals are in todays game). That shouldn't be underestimated. A midfield two is both hard to find and difficult to implement to the degree where you want two players to hit the ground running. We'd have to be extremely lucky, and in this football climate, we can't afford to hinge so much on luck. This can be crippling to our team.
