Mascherano to Juve?

Not open for further replies.
European champions Barcelona are closing in on a January swoop for Manchester City forward Robinho, with sporting director Txiki Begiristain saying that the Brazilian is "a very interesting footballer and could play for us in the Champions League".

With City fans saying Toure in Jan is looking likely and Barca seemingly preparing for life without Henry by targeting Robinho... maybe there is something in it.

Hypothetically, if we were to get Yaya Toure & £20m for Mascher we would have swapped Alonso/Mascher for Aquilani/Toure and banked about £35m. If Aquilani stays fit then I see this as good business and won't weaken the team particularly if Rafa is given the extra money to stregthen other areas.

Hypothetically, if we were to get Yaya Toure & 20 million for Mascherano we should bite their hands off.

It's not beyong the realms of possibility as Rafa would value Mascher at a higher price than Xabi in that he is 2 years younger, captain of Argentina and touted by some as being the best defensive midfielder in the world. If barca are desperate to get him and Rafa plays "hardball" then I can see Mascher being valued at £40m and LFC offering a cheeky £20m for Yaya.

The qustion is whether Barca are desperate or not. But I hope you're right.

I like Mascher, and am surprised so many are so dismissive of the possibility of him leaving.
I don't think he has been great so far this season.

I do however agree with the line that there is no point in keeping an unhappy player, but we really do need a top replacement , Lucas tries hard and he is not a bad player, but just not good enough to follow Didi and Mascher.

This is all a hang-over from the summer, and Maschers wife's issues with not being settled.
It seems more and more obvious to me that Benitez could not afford to lose both Alonso and Mascherano in the summer, particularly with his gamble on Aqualiani and the probability is Mascher was persuaded to stay at least until January when he would be granted a move, and thus give Benitez time to weigh up options and form.

He is worth at least £30m+, but if other big teams don't come knocking he could go for a lot less.

I am as well, but then perhaps I shouldn't be given the attitudes over Alonso in the summer.

Just as long as we don't find ourselves extolling the virtues of Plessis or some other nobody.

If Mascher really does go I think that Simon Rolfes of Bayer Leverkusen would be worth a punt.

He's captain of Bayer Leverkusen and a regular in the German national team. Tall, a good footballer, reads the game well. He reminds me of Didi a lot.

MEH!

yeah, I said it. I don't think we'll feel his loss half as badly as we've felt xabi's.
[/quote]

Big surprise.  I shan't bother reminding you of this if/when we get overrun in midfield against a big team without him, because knowing you you'll refuse to face up to how wrong you are even then.

If we were to lose Masher as well as Alonso and we didn't find an adequate replacement (which, let's face it won't be easy as our owners may withhold cash and class DMs are not that easy to find) we'd find our midfield being overrun repeatedly. Aquilani is still unproven as yet.

Exactly so Sunny, it's a very difficult position, and one that January is not the best time to sort out.
Presumably the idea that Mascher is off come-what-may is the reason his contract has not been re-negotiated and his pay increased.
If it's all true and I have a feeling it is, so much for Rafa's assertion a few weeks ago that Masher was all settled and committed

I think masher is a very good midfielder but replacable. obviously I want us to hold on to him but wouldn't lose sleep if we sold him.

With all the rumours and then the comments coming from his agent it's clear that Mascher is going to leave, but i'd be very surprised if we let him go in January. Hopefully the Italian lad settles in this season and then we can sell Mascher in the summer.

It's gutting that 2 of our better players have wanted out recently, i just hope that this is an end to it.

If things dont improve over the course of the season I can see a few others becoming restless.

If we go another season without a trophy and continue to sell before we can buy, then yeah i'd agree with you.

Hopefully we'll have a new owner before January.

At least with Masher it seems to be hinging on family issues, Rafa's done everything he can really, he brought him here and helped save his career at the time, he's now captain of his country.

As Vlad said, I suspect something is afoot, though I reckon he's probably (reasonably) been asked to sit it out for the season and see how things develop and if nothing changes then perhaps he'll go, I'd be surprised if it's in January though.

Regards him going, I can see both sides of it. He's a defensive midfielder playing in a central midfield lacking creativity, so people are going to be a bit 'so what' about it all. The problem is though with the right partner he 'can' be brilliant and his strengths become more noticeable as he's allowed to concentrate fully on his own game, rather than trying to do the things he's not really there for. A dominating midfield partner who'll put their foot on the ball and play it will help us see the best in him.

This isn't about the potential loss of Mascherano, it's about the potential loss of what was a World Class midfield last season, to the tune of a possible £60m (that's how highly rated these two individuals are in todays game). That shouldn't be underestimated. A midfield two is both hard to find and difficult to implement to the degree where you want two players to hit the ground running. We'd have to be extremely lucky, and in this football climate, we can't afford to hinge so much on luck. This can be crippling to our team.

We will need to see the impact Aquilani will have on the team. Assuming he is good, then we need to find a partner for him.

Assuming Mascherano is off, we need to look to the future and find someone to compliment our new Italian saviour.

Robbie Keane?

I agree with all of that Mark.

I think he would have definitely got a new contract in the summer if we thought we could keep him. I guess if' he's not happy then he's got to do what's best for his family.

As it stands it looks like we're left hoping that Aquilani can settle in very quickly and then Maschers replacement can come in and do the same.

He's doing well - some MOTM displays, and Juve and their fans really rate him. I suspect though that that has a lot to do with the slower style of Serie A. His strength and stamina were never in doubt here either - just the, er, playing football bit.

Juve have bought Felipe Melo (who's supposedly a DM/CM) this summer, is Momo still getting games? In any case, they don't need new signings for that position unless they are selling one of them, so it doesn't make sense they'd be after Mascherano.
