Goals aren't the issue.

It's the lack of creativity and incisive passing required to open teams up.

We've got others in the squad to put the goals away.
Who?

Torres, Kuyt, Gerrard, Bennayoun.

Do any of our Centre halves ever score? Vidic scored a load for Utd 2 seasons ago. Terry has scored regularly in seasons gone by. So has Gallas, etc.

Without the 4 above players, we dont have a goal in the team.

That needs addressing IMO.
Of course it does at some point, but Alonso was hardly a huge scorer of goals, neither was his chosen replacement.

Just having someone capable of playing the ball forwards and dictate some kind of tempo would improve us no end.

Yes I totally agree with the last comment.

We just need more players that will get in the box and look to finish. Cant see this happening under rafa, they play like Robots and no-one is willing to take the risk. Im just sick to death of watching the same old cautious shite every week. Yesterday broke the Premier League record (so im told) for fewest shots in a match. Add that to the boring shite we watched at Wolves, Stoke, and Arsenal, and its no wonder people are getting a bit upset.

I understand we were in a rut and we needed to learn to defend better first and then worry about the goals, but come on fucking hell. This is woeful.

Alonso did bang in a few last season by the way. I'd say he got at least 5 or 6 in the league.

this was a chance to pull man city in with the games in hand they have so them being the home is whilst not irrelavent shouldn't have meant we couldn't commit bodies to the attack as well. this was a game we needed to win.

Oh 6CM is. You're not.

Claude Makalele, regarded as the finest recent example of the defensive midfielder, so much so, that the position was named after him, went many years in succession without a league goal. Michael Essien can hardly be described as prolific in front of goal. I can name example after example.

We play with TWO Claude Makelele's.

One of which is a Joey Deacon version of Claude Makelele.

I don't understand how people can't see what Alonso brought us. He was instrumental in how we used set up attacks. He was our metronome, he dictated play and controlled the tempo. He was also excellent at getting the ball to Gerrard in space who in turn fed the ball to Torres.

Some are over sensitive with regards to Lucas at times. I agree Brendan is way OTT in his hate for Lucas but if we're all honest a partnership of Lucas and Masher isn't ideal and it doesn't seem to do us any favours. Masher is the obvious player to keep in the centre so perhaps an alternative to Lucas is needed.

To try and downplay Alonso's role in the past for us just to try and justify Lucas is silly. Also, who cares if Insua has more assists than Alonso did last year. What does that stat prove in regards to the team as a whole and how we play. Will Madrid be coming in with a huge bid for Insua? Nope.

I'm not here to attack Lucas, I've defended him here many times in the past. He is a decent player who is consistent without being spectacular but he isn't fit to lace Xabi Alonso's boots in terms of dictating play and controlling a midfield. It is not his fault he is being asked to play in that role but it is fair to question his ability to do it and aspire for someone else. We didn't know what we lost until it was gone with regards to Alonso, another reason why I find it baffling that people would cash in on Masher. We don't want to get into a habit of selling world class players and replacing them with inferior one's.

If Torres, Yossi, Johnson and Gerrard were fit all season perhaps we would be firing on all cylinders and the Lucas debate would only be a minor footnote of this season rather than the saga it is now. I'm not blaming Lucas for this poor season at all, I'd apportion the blame in the following order; injuries to our creative players, a shaky defence at the beginning of the season, the loss of Alonso and then the midfield partnership of Lucas and Mash.

People see the word Lucas and the either go bonkers (Brendan) or become very defensive (Mark). Fact is, I don't like the player but that is not what the post's about. It's about the fact only ONE should be in the middle, not BOTH. It's hurting our team.
I don't agree. I've never bought into the re-invention of Alonso as some super-player that was the springboard for our attacks. He was an out-and-out defensive midfielder, as is shown by the fact that he only made three assists out of our 77 league goals last year. His passing was no more incisive than Lucas this season.

Alonso only played in something like 27 league games last year too, so it's not like we couldn't play without him (Man U away is the classic example, when Lucas was the best midfielder on view by a mile).

So I just don't see how playing two defensive midfielders this season is hurting the team when we had two defensive midfielders doing the same last season and. as match stats show, neither was exactly bombing forward and getting or making goals

Liverpool's main problem has been a lack of quality in wide areas all season, allied with Gerrard's total slump in form (only 6 goals, two of which were penalties), so we've been toothless in the attacking 3 midfield positions, a situation made worse by the lengthy injury to Torres.

That's what's been "harming the team", not what the two DMs have been doing - in fact they've both done a fabulous job in their positions

But let's ignore all that and get back on track and slag off Lucas
Mate, I don't know who you are and don't recall seeing any of our posts before but you should post more if that's an indication of your opinions, its like a breath of fresh air.

I agree with every word.
I don't come on here very often, as it's like a parallel universe in many ways, but every now and again I try to chuck in a sane comment to balance things out! I fear it's going to be an uphill struggle though. Any help will be appreciated!
Just for clarification.
You feel that we are no worse off with Lucas playing in the role that Alonso left?

Lucas is really a very average player, who looks almost acceptable, and not out of place in our current team that is rammed with very average players, hence the reason why some almost sensible people, yourself fof instance are becoming confused with his ability.

I must take you to task on one point before that though, you suggested that Alonso was no more than a defensive midfield player. Are you suggesting that is what he actually is , or the position he was made to play by Benitez?

I have mixed feelings over Xabi, on one hand he really did have a couple of indifferent seasons before last year, on the other hand he had a magnificent season last year, and that is reflected in his valuations over that period.
Rafa was happy to off-load Xabi for £15m when he was after Barry, and ended up holding out for £30m when he wasn't, and Xabi had put in a great year.
In the formation with Gerrard playing behind Torres that was used to some success last year, it was Xabi's role to feed Gerrard, and not particularly Torres, hence, I would suggest, the lack of actual assists.

regards
I don't always agree with you,but you always be counted on to make make valid, reasoned arguments. I'm not sure if you are referring to me or Carshaltonian, I presume its the latter. Xabi Alonso is and was a top class player and any team would miss him if he was not there.

To blame Lucas for the teams woes which if not you, then many others in here have, is ridiculous. I'd sooner blame Gerrard than Lucas, if we're going to blame anyone. Lucas's defined role is midfielder, Gerrard's is 'matchwinner' on £120k per week. He hasn't won many matches for us lately has he?

I agree that Lucas has been spectacularly unspectacular but he is nowhere near our worst player this season.
Thank you, yes I can can't I.

I don't think it's as simple as blaming Lucas for the teams woes, Lucas is a symptom of the malaise.
I think what is to blame is ending up with such a shite squad that Lucas somehow justifies his place, as there is usually (sadly) no one better, which is even more worrying than Rafa believing that Lucas is better than he actually is (which he does).

I don't think along those lines, is that a surprise?...

What we need is five quality players - two strikers (one of who is back up), two wide men - left and right and a left back.
Gerrard can go back deeper into midfield alongside Mascher.
That means we need around £80-£90m, so unless things pick up remarkably we are likely to remain pretty fucked

Yep, i've edited that to remove possibly. I pity people who sit in either extreme with Lucas. I don't want to 'hate' him in the sense Brendan does. Neither do I want to defend him to an extent that i'd attack the role of Alonso to try justify Lucas. The whole Lucas saga is one giant ' Meh ' for me.

It'd still be a priority to me, Vlad.

We can push Gerrard back to CM, as I wanted in the summer, but Benitez has never shown any sign of it and unless some other manager comes in, I don't see the point in speculating about. And unless Aquilani shows signs of adaptation in the next few months it's going to be a massive concern for next year. Someone youngish, feisty and used the English game would be an improvement and not necessarily expensive either.

I think we can get away with:

1 striker - leaving us Dirk, Torres, N'gog + newbie (Edit - possibly Zarate, as Lazio are rumoured to want him out)
1 new LB
1 CM
1 new RB, with Johnson pushed up to RM.

Dirk has to play predominantly up front (if selected) in a 4-4-2, leaving Johnson and Yossi to fight it out for the RW spot.

and yet at times we were amazing last season. I don't think we need the amount of players you suggest just good luck with injuries and a couple of key signings. left midfield and left back for the first team and a competent back up striker for the squad. in regards to CM move gerrard there and play yossi as the support striker.

That just serves to accept Rafa's penchant for cautious clean sheets.

I'd rather he risked losing in order to achieve the win.; unfortunately it's a moot point nowbecause we don't have the personnel to get goals.
Yep. Lucas is the slightly better passer but Mascher is the far better defensive midfielder.
Disagree. Mascherano is also the better passer. It's a no-brainer then really.

I suppose what is most depressing and/or illuminating is that, in amongst all of the quacking about how shit Lucas is, or what Masher's role is, hardly anyone has actually talked at any great length about Aqulani's role (or otherwise) in all of this.

If he was half the player us (or indeed Benitez) had wanted him to be, Lucas wouldn't (or shouldn't) be an issue, because he'd be back where he belongs - on the bench.

I remember joking ages ago that I wasn't arsed about Purple not being quite as good as some others had made him out to be, because all that he actually needed to do was just be "better than Lucas", which LOADS of players currently in the Premiership are. So I stupidly assumed that a £20m Italian international would have no problem in at least managing that.

The fact that he hasn't is yet another reason why Benitez no longer deserves to be manager of Liverpool.

It's a fair point. The only logical solution then to anyone with a brain would be to put Gerrard back in central midfield.

What kind of retarded propaganda is this that Gerrard is too undisciplined for the CM role?
