Still avoiding the original questions I asked then?

BECAUSE ITS RETARDED.

I'm saying there is no obvious basis for the price we paid, which seems way too much.

Did both sides have figures in the their mind - yes of course they did. Do you want to answer whether they brushed their teeth that morning too ? Yes, the probably did.

I'm not suggesting something silly happened in the negotiations.

What are you suggesting then?

We will have got lucky if that happens.

There's always a bit of luck involved with young players, but surely it will go down as a triumph for the scouting team, will it not? I mean, spotting diamonds in the rough is their job, isn't it? I'm not saying I think he'll be great, or that he'll be shit. Or that our scouting team are infallible. But if we're going to pan them for poor decisions, we can't simply say it was pure "luck" when one comes good.

This lad might be shit, or he might be good. Or he might just be mediocre. I can't say either way, because I'd never seen or heard of him before we signed him. In the same way that I knew next to nothing about Coutinho before we signed him. What I will say, is given that we know next to nothing about the lad, it might be a bit premature to chastise the management for signing him, or dismiss him as not good enough.

Not really. He's just saying that he thinks that for the level of football he's played at that he's too expensive. In general he's correct on the matter. You wouldn't normally pay such a high price for a player of his level. Tom Ince is going for £8m and he's played in theory more competitive football and we consider £8m too much for Ince.

What theory suggests that Tom Ince has played more competitive football?

Actually, Rosco has a point although a regurgitated one.

It's quite a gamble for an unproven talent such as Luis Alberto.

7M plus a little more could probably get us Keisuke Honda.

Between him and Luis Alberto, who's the better choice ?

Clearly, Honda is 70,000 better, probably more.

I'm pretty sure we all think that 7 million was a substantial wedge of money for an unproven player. No one is saying we got a bargain. No one is saying he is worth the money. We don't know anything about the player bar a few clips and a few stats. We honestly cannot judge him yet. We have to presume that the scout/manager thinks the juice is worth the squeeze and this guy has the potential to be a very good player for us.
Do I think he's worth 7million right now? No idea. Probably not, but that's guesswork on my part.

Of course I could wade in and lambast the signing and attack the player from the off. That way, if he fails I can claim to have been right all along and bask in the glory of being correct. That is a not a win-win situation for me or the club IMO.

Ross, you are turning into Brendan, and I don't mean Rogers. 😉

AND HONDA IS ON A MOTHERFUCKING FREE

*practices shitting through letterboxes*

Joke. I thought he was great at Venlo. Just pointing out that he has never been at a big club. Seems to worry some.

I've been clear already, but I'll spell it out for you.

Lets say you and all your neighbours decide to sell your largely similar looking houses. You all sell for around the 250k mark, except one fella who gets 700k.

Would you not wonder what the fuck is inside that house ? Because from the outside it looks like every other one.
So what you're saying, or admitting, Ross, is that all footballers look pretty much the same to you and you can't understand their value unless stats spell it out for you.

I wonder which 20 year old players he's using as a fee reference.
The only two I can think of at the moment is Ince and Zaha. Both came from the division under the top league, like Luis Alberto.
Zaha cost 15 mill, Ince is going for 8 mill and Luis Alberto was signed for 6,8 mill.

Other ones who have played in Spain, are a year younger have showed more promise and actually played a season in the top division are being bought for a fraction of his cost - and by the team who are shipping him out.

At the end of the day, until the lad kicks a ball, no one can really call the shots about a deal that's gone on behind closed doors for a player who's rated as a good prospect, the rationale over fees, who wanted him and who didn't etc is just speculative, we don't know.

As said, it's win win for Rosco, if he fails he can pretend that we all said he's going to be fucking amazing (obviously no one has) and point out how stupid we all must be - rather than the truth, that he just deserves a go before people start questioning the efficiency of the deal.

Let it go and just watch the fucking kid.

These are the same arguments people make every time we make a head scratching signing that turns out to be shit.

Not a good omen Mark.
