Liverpool's Summer Transfers : Speculation & Rumours

Liverpool youngster Ben Woodburn is heading to Holland on a season-long loan at Sparta Rotterdam.

The Reds have given the green light for the 20-year-old, who spent the last campaign at League One side Oxford United, to make the temporary move to the Eredivisie outfit.

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has been a driving force behind the transfer to his native country having first worked with Woodburn when under-16 coach at the Academy,

Lijnders believes time in Holland will help the Wales international develop in a league that suits his style while also gaining much-needed game time.

League One duo Ipswich Town and Portsmouth were also among those clubs interested in taking Woodburn on loan this season.

The Welshman has struggled with a number of injury setbacks in recent years, and made only 16 appearances for Oxford while helping them to the play-off semi-finals.

He was recalled early from a loan spell at Championship side Sheffield United the previous campaign after just eight outings, and was on the bench for Liverpool's Champions League semi-final win over Barcelona at Anfield.

Woodburn made his Reds debut as a 17-year-old in November 2016 and three days later became the club's youngest-ever goalscorer when netting in the League Cup win over Leeds United.

However, he hasn't appeared for Jurgen Klopp's side since a seven-minute run-out from the bench against Brighton and Hove Albion at Anfield in May 2018.

Let me add... if we signed no-one - gave significant game time to Jones, Brewster, Williams, Hoever & Elliot, finishes 2nd by no more than 5-10 points, got to the QF’s of the Champions League and narrowly got put out, won one of the 2 Domestic Cups, and got to QF or SF of the other... I’d be ok with that.

And I wouldn’t be crying about how new signings would have gotten us further.

What if we sell Brewster, though? Is that not a little odd? It looks like we're thinking about it. What's the reasoning there?

I agree that FSG are not stupid and know (or at the very least are told) what is required to maintain a successful sports club.

As has been mentioned, we've managed to get by on a very thin squad whilst spending very little for a couple seasons now and achieved great things.

We all know that generally that level of over-achievement is not sustainable and investment is required unless you hit the motherload in your youth set up and get a few world class kids coming through all at once.

In terms of "the answer to what?" - trying to keep us at the top.

We have a couple promising kids coming through (all being well) and we can get creative with some of our existing players perhaps but (to me at least) it's pretty obvious that we need investment across the team.

I'd love to know what the plans are / were and to what extent they've been affected by Covid. Right now it's hard for me to see a direction other than we've just postponed spending plans.. and that's dangerous because once you lose momentum, it's hard to get it back.

If I'm wrong and there is some great master plan at work then great - we all win.

As always on this board, some people worry and some don't!
And once that momentum is lost it will negatively affect players, staff and future transfers. Thereby starting a spiral of players wanting to leave and the top players (Werner, Thiago) no longer seeing LFC as the most desirable (or one of) destination.

It makes no sense to sell Brewster - are we actually considering it or is it made up bullshit, though.

It has to be bullshit unless we’re certain of signing a top class forward.

Or unless Brewster actively wants to leave permanently to play for Sheffield Utd in an attempt to secure a regular starting slot and get into the England team - which doesn’t stack up with the noises he’s been making all Pre-season.

Apparently the Echo's reporting that we've signed up ManUre's former commercial director, name of Matt Scammell. Interesting that we've managed to lure a commercial specialist, of all things, away from there.

Pearce & Honigstein have a piece in the Athletic today on Klopp's gameplan to defend the title. There's a small section on transfer plans:

Key bits are:
  • Expect more activity towards the end of the window
  • Still hoping to sell Grujic and Wilson
  • Will consider selling Brewster (with a buy-back clause) if we receive an offer of more than 25 million
  • Priorities are a 4th choice CB and a left-sided forward
  • Ismaila Sarr is being considered, but 40 million asking price too steep
  • Thiago - no offer yet. Depends on the Wijnaldum situation. Or something

Excellent piece of Binnyfying if I may say so. 🙂 Shame about Grujic - I had hopes for him, but there you go. Sarr's a good player but it's vital we're not seen to be held to ransom over him or anybody else.

I read them all and really appreciate the efforts, so more than happy to swing a few pound your way for the sub if it helps.
Its a £1 a month at the moment to subscribe to the Athletic for the next twelve months.
Special offer

Liverpool are still counting the cost of the COVID-19 pandemic but the overall hit to club revenues as a result of the crisis is now projected to exceed the £100 million mark. [@JamesPearceLFC]
