Liverpool's Summer Transfers : Speculation & Rumours

Equally - who have they signed that would we would have wanted?

It’s really only Timo Werner that we’ve missed out on.

I'm on about the fact that they're spending money though. I'm sure we have targets we want to buy.

Ah, if only we had their success.

But as we all know, spend nothing, win nothing.

Just like last year.

There's a middle ground to be found, and as I've said in other posts, I've got ultimate faith in Klopp and these players. But we need to start planning for the future and for the next team, as well as bolstering this current, relatively thin, aging squad. We don't seem to be interested in doing that.

I dunno, maybe it's misplaced, but I don't think FSG are unaware or uninterested in the same.

Even if their motives are purely for profit, they wouldn't be blind to this and are obviously thinking about how to find the best balance.

So far, they have proved to be pretty good custodians of the club, so I'm willing to cut them enough slack to wait and see what happens.

But also, don't pay me much heed. I've just decided that the target of my outrage is outrage culture.

Yeah I'm not kicking off or outraged, but I'm starting to become a bit concerned. As I've said, on the whole, they've been great owners.

However, I do wonder if they'd be this frugal if they didn't have a genius like Klopp in charge. Or maybe they've got some well thought out recruitment strategy that we don't know about. I don't know. But the last couple of years do look a bit worrying. I thought most clubs would be quiet this summer, but the pandemic doesn't really seem to have affected spending of clubs much smaller and nowhere near as wealthy as ours. So what's going on?

They could have said no

Think you're being slightly naive both had said to their clubs they expected to sold in the window. Obviously Chelsea isn't a bad destination, but if you had given both their choice of clubs in Europe I doubt they'd have been near the top of either list.

I get ya.

The thing is, they do have Klopp. And Klopp already has arguably the greatest team in world football.

As much as we're all desperate to hold on to this period of success, I think they are too. We just simplify the whole thing by saying we need signings in order to do that.

I believe they (Klopp and FSG) are looking at a much bigger picture and trying to achieve the same things we want, just with a lot more nuanced thought.

I’m in the same camp. It’s not the end of the world if we don’t sign anyone but will be slightly annoyed we’ve only addressed backup to robbo. I think there is a few things going on.

We know the front 3 will need replacing over the next 3-4 years and we may have planned for expected transfer fees for those going out. I mean close to or exceeding £85 million. That’s no longer a guarantee. Are we waiting to see how the market reacts before finalising our strategy and targets?

We also have an abundance of midfielders which would make sense with not bringing in Thiago till at least one main midfielder goes or 2 squad like Wilson and Gruij.

I get we need fresh legs and bodies in the squad but it isn’t just as easy as go out and buy X, Y and Z. You need a plan on how to use them, when to use them and who to drop. Klopp is all about the squad as a whole and wouldn’t want a pissed off player hanging round.

I don't think so. Sometimes the obvious answer is the right one and in this case it is.

The answer to what?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we shouldn't sign anyone. I'm just saying that, at this stage, based only the limited "info" we glean, I don't believe that FSG is not cognisant of what we need for long term success and thinking and planning carefully to try to achieve that.

I'm pretty calm about the situation but make no doubt covid has fucked a lot of plans the club had in place and continues to do so.

Clubs were expecting fans to be allowed back in grounds at reduced capacity in October, I think the way things are going we can knock that on its head till possibly the new year. So that's more income that will be lost. The premier league have openly stated that if there no fans in grounds at all this season that clubs are collectively looking at a combined £700m loss. Will TV companies again demand rebates from the premier league and UEFA just like this season? China have yanked a £590m overseas TV deal with the premier league.

What if the covid vaccine isn't successful?

Are clubs like man utd Spurs etc going to take out even more loans to buy players. Furlough even more staff?

I agree in a sense we should be building on a position of strength but with no magic ball it's difficult to say how the season will pan out or what income will be generated. I mean we can even shift the likes of Shaqiri and Wilson (we may be asking too much for them but that's besides the point).

The window has another month to go, think we need to relax trust the judgement in the manager and his backroom staff and FSG that all will be good. P.s. excellent article in the Athletic yesterday about the analytics dept, I'll post it in the sticky shortly

Perhaps after the the case for FFP being overturned against Man City, FSG have decided that there is never going to be a level playing field and that their "asset" has as a consequence pretty much reached the peak of its value.
Therefore, if they are thinking of selling the club, would it make sense to inject capital for player purchases, if they may not increase the value of the club.
Pure conjecture of course.

I agree that FSG are not stupid and know (or at the very least are told) what is required to maintain a successful sports club.

As has been mentioned, we've managed to get by on a very thin squad whilst spending very little for a couple seasons now and achieved great things.

We all know that generally that level of over-achievement is not sustainable and investment is required unless you hit the motherload in your youth set up and get a few world class kids coming through all at once.

In terms of "the answer to what?" - trying to keep us at the top.

We have a couple promising kids coming through (all being well) and we can get creative with some of our existing players perhaps but (to me at least) it's pretty obvious that we need investment across the team.

I'd love to know what the plans are / were and to what extent they've been affected by Covid. Right now it's hard for me to see a direction other than we've just postponed spending plans.. and that's dangerous because once you lose momentum, it's hard to get it back.

If I'm wrong and there is some great master plan at work then great - we all win.

As always on this board, some people worry and some don't!

I get it if we are not going to sign anyone in midfield or forward positions, but no centre back as well?

We can't rely on Matip and Gomez for the entire season, basing things on Murphy's law we are bound to see VVD out at some point, Fab is not a centre back and Phillips is simply not very good.

This. We have a great squad, with a limited set of weaknesses. The solution to those weaknesses is in the transfer market, because we've been trying to find it internally for a while, and haven't exactly cracked it.

Going into next season with the same set of players is hardly some disaster, and that's not what anyone is saying.

But the margins at the top are very very fine, and could be the difference in winning the title and finishing 2nd. I hope we don't get surprised by how quickly other teams catch up ground on us.

There's also the other matter of building for the future once the present group of players start declining. The sooner we start that the better.

I mean, I really hope I'm wrong, I really do, but I just can't see us having ANOTHER season at close to 100 points. It's miracle territory we've done it 2 years running, given our family limited squad.

If we drop back to 85 to 90 points this year then a new signing could easily be the difference between winning the league and not.

I'm on about the fact that they're spending money though. I'm sure we have targets we want to buy.

Yeah - but are our targets actually available.

Werner clearly was - but I don’t know what our other targets actually are - no-one really does - until just before we actually buy them.

I’m not saying we shouldn’t buy - but our flaws are not as obvious as some other teams and I’m not into buying for the sake of it.

City have bought - but hasn’t really improve them - Chelsea have bought for the areas they probably least need to buy.

It is frustrating - but ... I dunno... I just can’t seem to get worked up about not signing people.

I’m sure when we do decide to buy - we’ll identify and sign the players we want and need.

If we want to compete on all fronts, getting close to 100 points is going to be next to impossible. I think it's probable we fall back to 85-90 points this year. Let's see if that's enough to win the title.

Of course, there's the injury equation to be kept in mind. We've been very fortunate to have avoided major injuries to any of our key players over the last 2 years. If that changes, we could well drop to 3rd or 4th.

Well, for example, we're definitely interested in Sarr, but are currently reluctant to make a bid for some reason. We were after Werner, but god knows why we dropped out. Thiago I'm not convinced we're interested in, but if you believe we are, why haven't we made a move. Something is going on, and it's odd.

It's not just about strengthening the first team, it's also about providing depth and competition. We don't have an awful lot of that. We've actually gotten thinner at centre back.

Getting close to 100 points isn’t normal- it’s just a thing that has happened over the last couple of seasons with two very, very good sides at the absolute top of their game.

In the same way - I absolutely did not expect that team to make 3 Champions League Finals on the bounce - no matter how good they were or indeed are - and I don’t think we’ll retain the title this year either - regardless of who we sign.

We talk about creating a new on-going phase of success - and I believe we have a squad, a manager, a back room team (and I mean analytics as well as coaching) and owners who have set us for success - if that model is based on us selling a “Star” once every now and then and using that to splurge “big time” on 2 or 3 top talents and in between topping up with 27 YO’s and £10m backups - then I’m kinda ok with that.

I’ll be right fucked off if we don’t flog Salah for £150m next summer and sign Mbappe & Sancho though....

So the Van Dijk money doesn't count then?

As I said about that money, it was on the back of selling Coutinho, not money that was given by FSG,freely,or part of a transfer buget that was planed before the sell of Coutinho

In my very humble opinion you make yourself look a complete tit when you look at our history of signings over the last 5 years, and neglect that the paltry outlay you are moaning about made us League, European and World champions. I can sort of understand (though not necessarily agree with) people looking at our current (or very recent) transfer record and worry about the future, but to complain over what has happened over a 5 year period, during which Liverpool went from failing to get into the top 4 to the dizzy heights we now occupy is madness.

Oh, but its Donavan ...
Just Image for one second "IF" Klopp had been given the money in thoose windows to spend... We Could have won the Title earlier, or in 2018/19, maybe the CL loss to Real could have been a win, had we had quailty back up to Salah, Yes I Know it is a "What IF" but one quality player in both 2018/19 title and in the CL 2017/18 could have made all the difference. We could have signed Andy Robertson in January 2017/18 or the Ox..

But that is not the point I was making... The point I was making was that in all the five window we(LFC) spent next to nothing saving the club and FSG money, Even if
You say £10m per window, Excluding VVD (Coutinho sale money) so call it four windows, less the £12.6m we did spend that still works out at £28.4M owed toKlopp as part of his unspent passed transfer budget. that plus the £10.8m for Lovren is £39.2m towards Thiago Alcantara

We should not be looking at selling Wijnaldum to fund a move for Alcantara, we should be looking to have both

Yeah - we’re interested in Sarr - which makes sense - but he’s still at Watford - I dunno - it kinda makes sense to not bid - they’ll want £40m+ - and I’m not sure he’s that good - yet - or even having him in our squad would be beneficial while he’s likely to sit on the bench Vs getting game time elsewhere for another year.

If he goes to somewhere like Palace for £30m and £100k a week... ok... that’ll be shit.

Werner is apparently earning £300k+ a week - good for him - but if there’s was a sniff of him looking for that with us - then he should have been told to get fucked.

I get he would have been a good acquisition - but... to be honest- I don’t know what the fucker looks like, let alone plays line - so meh.

We were up in arms about not signing Pepe last season and letting Arsenal steal him from us...

Besides... I’ve already decided we need to be on the new Lille sensation Caminavagina... or whatever his name is.... he da man for us.

Ah, if only we had their success.

But as we all know, spend nothing, win nothing.

Just like last year.

That great If you want to be like Leicester City and win the title once in a blue moon (No punt intended)
Looking at the 2018/19 season and where City came from to pip us in the title race, then looking at their's and ours season in 2019/20... I have to wonder how much of this season was it down to us winning the title or City under preforming. Yes we won our games, but If City played as they did in 2018/19 would we have won the title..?

Yes we lifted the title for the first time in 30 years, and now that we have, I don't want it to be another 30 years before we do so again

You don't need to tie yourself in knots trying to rationalise why us signing no-one is okay or even good.

It's okay to admit that things aren't super peachy.

Do it. Liberate yourself.

Keni - I’m not tying myself in knots - I truly couldn’t care less about what overpriced signing that fails to live up to all expectations we do or do not make this summer.

It’s not “ok”, but neither is it the end of the world.

The angst about signings seems to get worse every season - I don’t know why.

I’m much more interested in seeing what Keita & Minamino can do.

Let me add... if we signed no-one - gave significant game time to Jones, Brewster, Williams, Hoever & Elliot, finishes 2nd by no more than 5-10 points, got to the QF’s of the Champions League and narrowly got put out, won one of the 2 Domestic Cups, and got to QF or SF of the other... I’d be ok with that.

And I wouldn’t be crying about how new signings would have gotten us further.
