Liverpool Vs Man City Capital One Cup Final - Match Thread

A new left back is way lower in our priorities. We could have won that game with a striker who could get the ball and hit it on target. A keeper, a midfielder and a striker is what we need.

I was interested in the difference between Sturridge and Origi actually. Origi is still hugely raw, but he looks much more of a physical presence than Sturridge, and more likely to create chances for himself. Sturridge is obviously far better, but he is somewhat reliant on service - and especially on Coutinho.

Indeed. Although the striker is less of a priority because I thnk Origi is going to be a terrific player. And then there's Ings' return.

Que ?

Studge's great feet makes him many goals, without any assistance thank you very much (though I do think Origi is going to be an excellent player).

Well bottom corner is not the best choice .. it's much harder to hit a small target and the keeper can still reach it. Stevie put many high into a top corner 'zone' (they are much bigger areas than bottom corners) and that's where the keeper can't reach them as his body is already on the way down at that full stretch.

I strongly disagree. For one thing the taker's natural tendency will always be to hit the ball upwards anyway, so if you deliberately hit them high you're bound to reduce your margin of error, and for another the keeper's first movement is up, not down. Citeh had the right idea, and it showed.

You can disagree all you like mate but ask the best. Stevie loved to hit it in that zone and practiced for that top right (or left) corner all the time - for a very good reason, this one match proves nothing. And sorry but Newton disagrees with you too 😉

I'm happy with Origi, Sturridge and Ings, we deserately need a goalscoring wideman, a Reus or Sane. Number for me is a midfielder who can dominate a game, we completely lack that right now.

We lack dominant players in all areas of the pitch. Goalkeeper, defence, midfield and attack.

Thoughts:

1) The team fights well.
2) Lallana's entrance into the game really gave us an edge - he took up great positions (as he normally does) and was instrumental in the equalizer.
3) Props to Studge for lasting 120 minutes. The next few months are just to get him into shape for next season.
4) I like Lucas as a CB but on another day, he would have seen red.
5) Moreno is an idiot ... Would rather he wasn't with us next year.
6) Milner ... So frustrating as a midfield option.
7) Origi is looking like the player Dmish critiqued post his performance against the US in the WC. It's his growth as a player with Klopp that will see Benteke leaving in the summer
8) Oliver bottled it big time with Fernandinho and Toure - both should have seen red.
9) Sterling's misses highlighted the same weakness he had with us .. He's a really good player but he's such an erratic finisher ... Pity he's got a winner's medal tonight.
10) Tough to take today's loss. Really tough.
11) Oh, and Mign really should be sold in the summer. That goal - regardless of the great saves on Kun etc - was pathetic. Absolutely pathetic.

You shouldn't be happy with the strikers. Ings will be a really good supporting striker, Origi is still just potential and Studge, as we all know, can be brilliant when fit but may as well have not turned up today. No, if you want a team to win the league you need to be ruthless (and rich) and go out and buy the very best keeper you can and the very best striker you can, and, ideally, the very best midfielder you can. Yes, it would be nice to have a left back who isn't a fucking idiot, but most of the ones we've had have been fucking idiots since Stevie Nicol, who was just thick off the pitch but weirdly sensible on it.

Not happy that we lost but Klopp know what he is doing. Lucas as central defender is one proof.

Will Matip and Lucas be our first choice central defenders next season? I would say yes.

Although not his ultimate position Gomez could fill that role on the left. Moreno has got to go I'm afraid. Keeper has to be the priority for any cash we have. City were incredibly disciplined in defence today fair play to them.

The message 'just play the ball to feet' was what wasn't heeded today. As has been the case for most games this season. Get close to the opposition box and we contrive new ways to give the ball away - stupid back heels, passes/crosses hit without looking at where they're going, stupid little jabs into centre backs' feet. It's not THAT difficult. Keep the ball, keep moving, but be patient, look for space and play it where it is, not where it isn't.

Macca spot on - we have the ball more than we have ever had under past managers but that final third we just become clueless.

That will come in time. Well done to Klopp for managing to get a squad not of his making to a cup final in his first season.

If we spend a single pound in the summer on a player that is not destined for the first team, I will have no trust in Klopp. It will be a costly waste.

Just got back in, and not in mood to dissect. One thing I am wondering though is what the fuck was with the kick takers?

Agreed.
One penalty taker left. Who was it? Milner or Henderson.
Either way, disappointing lack of leadership from our captain and vice captain.

I'd imagine Sturridge would have been fifth. Henderson's been in bad form since returning from injury so perhaps he wasn't confident enough to step up. Milner used to take them at Man City sometimes, so I thought he'd be one of the five initial takers. Maybe he thought they knew too much about where he'd place it though.

The team's won penalty shootouts before. I don't recall people posting celebratory analyses of each kick for those occasions. They're a needlessly stressful lottery, which is why I always blank them out. No point in analysing who should've done what. Leave that to the club's video specialists. Move on and forget.

The order of our penalty takers was indeed surprising. But at the end of the day I don't think it mattered. All our penalties were good, it was just that Caballero pulled off some incredible saves.

Klopps post match conference was great , I seriously hope that's his outlook and not just media spam

Not at all. It shows the skill that Klopp has. He's taken a team that most here claim are "shit" and taken them to a cup final.
My point is, reaching the final wasn't all down to Klopp. We've ridden our luck along the way and the players, who I've been as critical of as anyone on the site, deserve at least some credit.
