What would you suggest Ryan? Carry on doing what we're doing?
I'd pick the team that started last night mate.

How many times do you think Rafa's gonna select Gerrard as a central midfielder again?

4-5-1. Wenger's teams have been playing it for the best part of 5 years. Would you like to have an in-depth discussion about Arsene Wenger's tactics?

Here's on for you: Theo Walcott sat on the bench in the Champions League against us last year whilst Emmanuel Eboue played ahead of him.
Not really like.

Yes he did. Would Eboue start ahead of Walcott in a home game against one of the worst sides in the league?
Yes, he has quite a few times. Walcott's started 6 games all fucking season.

It's a moot point anyway, Arsenal play with 1 striker, sometimes barely even that if you count Arshavin being that '1'.
There's only one striker in my suggestion too mate. I would've thought.
There's only one actual midfielder though mate, the rest are attacking threats. They can play defensively but it restricts their game, and ultimately the teams attacking threat. Did you see Gerrard's effort at central midfield the other night? How many times has Aquilani tracked back? What does it do to Babel's game when he has to work backwards? Do you think last night's performance from Babel was a coincidence? There was a reason why he played well, and it wasn't a sudden attitudinal change. Is that even a word?

United played 4 defensive midfielders the other night, scored 4, and could have had a dozen if they'd really bothered.

Why do people not see things like that? What do you think of when you're watching them play?

Last night and againts Wigan something along the lines of; Will these poor showings ever stop? Why am I doing this to myself week in week out? Setting myself up for a game only for me to be extremely underwhelmed.

And then I usually start to think about having a beer. Spring-time is coming soon. Sex.

It helps.
Yes.

Ha! Ryan actually thinks he's the only person on this forum who *really* watches football, doesn't he? If only the rest of us had experienced top-flight semi-professional Australian soccer and knew just how many defensive midfielders it takes to make a team that can score four goals in a single match...
So carry on doing what we're doing then.

I'm of the opinion that poor performances do not deserve to be rewarded. You know I'm a fan of Kuyt (Christ, it seemed like me and you against the world a couple of years ago) but he's been atrocious of late and needs a rest. Maxi on the other hand, has shown promise in his last two appearances so should get a go on the right for me. Of course, it means that Glen Johnson will have to pick his forays forward carefully, but he's been doing that anyway for the most part. And like I said, it's Portsmouth at home FFS.

What's more, two defensive midfielders at home to the bottom side in the league is completely unnecessary and sends out all the wrong messages from the outset. It's like I said before: we need to put out a side that demoralizes the opposition, not one that gives them genuine hope. Teams come to Anfield with a genuine belief that they can win these days, never mind being happy with a point.

As for formations, well, they mean relatively little these days anyway. 4-5-1 really only refers to the position of players when they're not in possession. As soon as they have the ball it quickly becomes a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 or any variation thereof. What's more, the teams you've been comparing us to pass the ball well. They move it quickly and decisively. Their players have license to go forward. They have imagination. They all play for each other. We can't expect to emulate them because we play a much more cautious brand of football.

If we had defensive solidarity to fall back on, I might see some merit in continuing in the same vein (I would still disagree with it, but I could at least rationalize it). However, we have failed in our attempts to remain solid defensively, and with it sacrificed any of the attacking impetus we built last season. So essentially, we have sacrificed attack for defence, and yet can't seem to defend properly either. Perhaps if we spend more time attacking, we wouldn't need to defend as much? It's radical, I know, but it could work.

So to summarize: In the absence of a complete change of philosophy (which is ultimately what's needed), I would suggest that in the short-term, to solve the complete lack of invention and attacking threat, more attacking players might be worth a try.

Aquilani has got to start.

Babel too.

And Maxi.

................................REINA...............................

JOHNSON..........CARRA......AGGER...........INSUA

.....................MASHER.........GERRARD...............

MAXI..........................AQUILANI..............BABEL

................................TORRES............................

Gerrard and Aqui can swap around a bit. That's probably our most balanced team at the moment. Pace and hardwork combined with good passing skills and players who can beat their marker.
That could be the dream team right now, though I think I'd die of shock if that's what Rafa plays.

Which are the 4 defensive midfielders from utd in the lineup then?

Man Utd
1 Van der Sar
2 Neville
5 Ferdinand
15 Vidic
3 Evra
25 Valencia
24 Fletcher
18 Scholes
13 Park
17 Nani
10 Rooney

I am fucked if I can find 4 defensive midfielders in that lineup? Cos I certainly wouldnt Class Scholes, Valencia & Park in that bracket.

Plus the fact that Utd are on a complete different planet to us in terms of playing confidence right now. Rooney could take apart most teams on his own and it wouldnt matter which players he had behind him.

Most of what you have written is absolute gash. It is pretty glaringly obvious that we need players with that little bit of spark / flair to our play. That is what makes the top 4 sides in this league stand out. At the moment using 2 defensive midfielders who have absolutely shag all attacking instinct along with Dirk the Donkey we are hardly fucking Brazil ala 1970 are we....

The system is failing. As we mostly all knew it would without high class recruits either as a backup for Torres or 2 decent wing forwards in a 4231 lineup. For this system to work we need 2 world class wingers and a half decent striker as backup.

There you go Ryan. Perfect. I've taken pretty much every player with any forward thinking proclavities out the side (and of course no Agger and Torres *beams*) it's functional to the max so I'm fully expecting a 4-0 romping, given that Arsenal almost never play Walcott when he's injured.
Oh and I know I've put deadly in twice, but given were of the back of a couple of defeats, I guess this will be a game that 'matters' and we all know that when it reeeeaaaalllly matters Dirks the milkman (he always delivers) so I'm expecting him to step up and perform as superdirk.
We can.not. Lose!!!

we usually play with 1 goalkeeper, 4defenders, 2 holding midfielders who also defend, we have 2 wide players (kuyt who defends and sometimes another defensive minded player) and gerrard and torres who are our only attacking threat!

Now ryan, tell me how on earth are you meant to win a game by having 8/9 defensive players and only 2/3 attacking players.

i think your too inlove with benitez and have started to think the same way he does.

Rafa is a tool so he will go with something along the lines of
