Liverpool v Chelsea Match Thread

I don't need to see the stats to know Henderson wasn't good enough again.
Eerily familiar to other recent matches.
This is what I've been seeing for the last 2-3 years. It's basically inconsistency and it became so apparent to me when he was moved to DM. I know there's others here who have had the same opinion about him, but the reason I've been the cunt harping about this over and over again is because I just couldnt get why no one else was seeing it. One of the first words I used to describe Henderson when he first joined, was that I thought he was a 'passenger' on the pitch. Sadly it hasn't changed. I don't believe the whole 'he's injured bit', he's just not good enough and he never was imo.

Klopp is berating Oliver hat he wasn't allowed to bring on Lallana, and he was going to a 5 at the back - I'm assuming:

moreno - klavan - matip - gomez - milner

Seems like he knew what he had to do though he should have done that very shortly after the goal ... late, but I guess improvement as he was looking to 'close up shop' and get the 1-0 win.

We didn’t deserve to drop points today. Chelsea offered fuck all and we pretty much bossed them throughout apart from Henderson. Twice he shit out of tackles and did his best Ray Wilkins crab impression. Yeah you have to knock it sideways to stretch the opposition but when was the last time he split a defence with a boss ball? Hazard and Kante waltzed passed him on countless occasions.

Thought Klopp should have brought Mane on sooner as well to stretch Chelsea but despite the disappointment of conceding late thought it was a good performance.

Even that thick shit twat Moreno was alright *said through gritted teeth*

As an aside met Leftpeg for the first time. What a thoroughly nice jinxy bastard - every game he’s been to this season we’ve drawn.

I always thought the best part of Henderson's game was his energy and making those bursting runs past the last man.

He can't do that anyone more as a DM and looks lost

He can still run, I'll give him that. He's always done that. But he needs to make challenges as well.

I think you undervalued his contribution back when we challenged for the title and should have been more willing to give a chance for him to play back into form after the chronic injuries. That said I think the time for patience has come to an end, he won't get back to the form of 13-14, and more and more will come around to your view on him.

Just don't be a jackass about it is all.

So with that terrible keeper giving Chelsea a goal, the awful Klavan and uncommanding Matip as well as the player who should never ever play for Liverpool again at the back, the useless Henderson and the long past-it Milner in the middle with the terrible Coutinho. With Sturridge, whose best days are long gone, and the useless Oxlade up front I'd say we did well to get a draw.

We’re also managed by a manager than doesn’t win finals.

I still think the reason we fell over with against Chelsea was his suspension.

It was a fair result overall - even though most of us think differently because we are LFC fans. Don't blame anyone specific regarding the goal they scored as it was obviously a freak cross come shot come goal. I do think the way we scored the goal using that one touch passing is the way forward - less dwelling on the pass - just pass and fucking move quickly before the opposition can organise and we will score. Salah was excellent and from their side watching Hazard - wow !! - confirms everything I say about him - he is the best player in the world when running at you with the ball - a rich mans Coutinho and everytime he had the ball he was slicing through our midfield like a knife through butter. As for those of you that blame Henderson for being outclassed - well he tried his best just as SG was saying regarding tracking him but given our overall opinion of Henderson (and our other midfielders) - how the fuck can any of you expect anything better when dealing with a player like Hazard ?

There is no chance if we sell Coutinho we could get Hazard is there ? - nah - he is made for Real Madrid.

To be fair, we NEVER lose when I’m at the game. I was 7 wins from 7 last season...and 4 draws from 4 this. That’s title winning form that is.

Jordan Henderson stats vs chelsea

passes : 69 (85%)
tackles : 0
interception : 0
clearances : 0
blocked shots : 0
fouls : 2
shots (OT) : 1 (1)
key passes : 0
crosses : 0
aerials won : 0

I know that stats don't tell the whole story. Still... This is our DM.

I'm pretty sure I saw Hendo win the ball, either through a tackle or interception, and clear the ball from danger a good few times last night. Not sure how they are calculating those stats, they don't ring true. He's headed the ball a few times too in defense – how's is that not being counted either as interception or aerials won?

Since @Morse didn't start MOM of the match thread yet, here are my picks:

  1. Oxlade-Chamberlain – made a crucial assist for Salah, but I was more impressed with the defensive side of his game. I lost count how many times he intervened to break down promising Chelsea attacks on his flank, staying sharper and anticipating better than any player on the pitch and once even outmuscling Bakayoko one on one. OK, on the balance of attacking and defensive work our most best player was still probably Salah – but he's running away with POS award as it is already and I think Ox deserves plaudits for his performance.
  2. Salah – enough said.
  3. I thought Hendo did pretty well overall, but I would give it to Matip for positioning himself perfectly every single time to win a header cleanly and comfortably whenever the ball was in his vicinity. With Klavan's help kept Morata quiet.

Henderson had an awful game. The number of times he stood off rather than putting in a block or tackle was quite disgraceful for a Liverpool captain. And Mignolet gets a lot of flack for inviting pressure with his short goal kicks but if Henderson didn’t keep coming short for them he’d have more options. I’m done with him...he’s fucking gash.

I guess you like your DM to slide into tackles all over the place, like Mascher used to do. It's a hell of a risky strategy; I think it's now commonly accepted that defenders prevent more chances by holding position and staying on their feet.

The stuff about Hendo somehow limiting Ming's options is just bizarre IMHO.

Yeah the Ming statement is just weird.
But Hendo had a shit game. He also seems clueless when to stand off and when to get in the face. He jumped in so many times yesterday in midfield, the opposition therefore skipping right past him and bypassing the midfield. It was horrible seeing him so lacking in his brain.

I appreciate an intelligent DM who can break up play, either by interceptions or tackles

Henderson offers neither, and more often than not it's a the story of backs off backs off backs off oh shit he's passed me

On the first point, no but I do like midfielders to put challenges in...something Henderson repeatedly failed to do yesterday.

On the second point, again not so. If you watch yesterday’s game every time Mignolet has the ball at his feet and Henderson comes short (just outside the box), the keeper rolls it short and we immediately put ourselves needlessly under pressure. Every time Henderson pushes up, Mignolet goes long and the danger is cleared. Watch the game and see for yourself.

Henderson gives him an option. The fact Ming passes short at times to players like Hendo with 2 guys on his back is due to Ming’s in-game retardeness.
Doesn’t matter who plays in the position, we’ll always have a player giving the goalie a short pass option.

So don’t give him the option by coming short. A goal kick is an opportunity to clear your lines and release the pressure. Our goal kicks pose almost as much danger as opposition corners. The goalkeeper and those around him are equally to blame for that.

Have you seen Ming kick a ball?

How many teams with modern day managers kick them long all the time?

Again, doesn’t matter if it’s Hendo playing, it’s going to happen. So blaming him for hat is nonsense.

Going short to a full back is fine. Going short to a full back who posses a good range of passes is even better. Going short to a guy standing in a straight line with the penalty spot who himself can only pass it short and more often than not sideways is a recipe for disaster. As anyone who watched yesterday’s game will know.

Interesting game. Big props to @Insignificance for sorting me a ticket, never been to a game against a big club before...

A draw could be fair, but my god what a sucker punch to see that stupid cross float in. Gah

Salah is amazing, ox showed a lot of promise and Coutinho had bursts of aceness, not least when he left one of their players on the floor.

I think game management cost us though. Wijnaldum for Sturridge lost us a vital outlet, and our shape gave them more space and we didn't close down enough in the last 30. I thought Milner was a crock of shit for most of the game, Hendo was meh, and if we sneaked a 1-0 we'd all be pretty happy. Mane came on way too late to do anything. If he came on for say, Coutinho at 80 mins, we'd have won.

Hazard was their best player by a country mile, and we struggled to contain him. He's ridiculously good and he'd improve any team. Other than that they posed no real threat. We're not gonna win the league with this team but we could still get top 4.

I can't fucking wait for Naby Keita...
